I believe I am related to James T. Burtis though the Thompson family that originated with Cornelius Tomson, mid 1600s-mid 1700s, who lived in the "Old Stone House", Upper Freehold, Monmouth Co., NJ. I know JTB's mother was Margaret D. Thompson. Was wondering if the family tree shows extensive details of the Thompson side?
Thanks so much for the info. I would love to have Laura's children's names and any dates or other info. I'm pleased you got to meet my Grandmother Baker. She passed away in 1973, and I didn't really get to talk to her much about the family. I would love to have any information you might have on the family. I know next to nothing about her except her sister Babe. She came over once or twice when we were visiting her in Bryan. I really loved her, especially since she has a lot of cats. Again, thanks.
I have been doing some looking into my family history and am kinda hitting a wall. I have traced my lines back to (William) Ira Burtis and Azubah Rinehart. William died in Iowa around 1879 and Azubah died in Nebraska later. They were both born in New York. Im having trouble finding out any inforamation about (William)Ira's parents. If anyone has any further information on this line i would be interested in hearing from you either here or by email gunfighterdrifter@yahoo.com

Re: Edward Burtis family

Frances Gambling married Edward S. Burtis 20 May 1873 according to NYC Methodist Marriages, 1785 - 1893, Vol 1 Index of Brides.

According to census records Frances and Edward Burtis were both born around 1847 or 1848.

His family was in the Milk business and lived in New Rochelle, Westchester Co, NY.

Frances is burried in the Wm Gambling plot at Greenwood Union Cemetery in Rye, NY. Don't have the date and I'm pretty sure Edward is not burried there.

The 1880 Census has Edward S. Burtis alone in New Rochelle. So, either Frances died or they were divorces. Perhaps she died in childbirth (total guess).

In the 1920 Census, Edward is married to Giorgiana.

No questions here. Just providing information.

HOMAS BURTIS (b 1765-1774, d 1816) & HANNAH (1773-1853), parents of JOSEPH BURTIS …

THOMAS BURTIS (b 1765-1774, d 1816) & HANNAH (1773-1853), parents of JOSEPH BURTIS …

THOMAS BURTIS was b btwn 1765 & 1774 based on the 1800 & 1810 censuses. (1800 - South Hempstead, Queens, NY; NARA film 25, p 75 B [B as in Boy]; 1810 - North Hempstead, Queens, NY, NARA film 34; p 401.) Based on Thomas’ & his wife’s calculated years of b & their son Joseph’s cal b of 1794, believe Thomas m Hannah abt 1793. Thomas d abt Apr 1816 as Hannah was appointed as Thomas’ administratix 27 Apr 1816. (Letters of administrations; Book C, Queens County, NY; FHL film 930752.) Thomas was b in NY state based on the 1880 census listing (Hempstead, Queens, NY; FHL Film 1254917; NARA film 917, p 363D.) of Thomas’ daus Mary Baldwin & Sarah Weekes. Sarah Weekes’ obit indicates her father "hailed from Canada," while her d cert indicates her fa was b in England. (Brooklyn Eagle, 23 Feb 1897, section- none, p three.)

Thomas & Hannah had ten children per the obit of their son, Henry A Burtis.
( http://www.rootsweb.com/~nynassa2/newspapers/2queens.htm Queens Sentinel, Feb 4, 1892.) Assuming all the children listed in the 1800 & 1810 censuses were theirs, the censuses mention seven children. The names of six are known.

The Methodist congregation in Hempstead was established in 1812. The obit mentioned above of Thomas’ dau, Sarah, indicates her mother was Methodist, & Sarah’s ancestors on her mother’s side as among the original members of the Methodist Church in Hempstead. No comment was made as to her fa’s religion. This suggests Sarah’s fa was not Methodist. A Thomas Burtis was christened 12 Apr 1768 in the Hempstead St George’s Episcopal Church. Parents were listed as William Burtis & Sarah Burtis. Three more of their children – Jane, Sarah & Ruth- were christened the same day. (Adventures for God: a history of St. George's Episcopal Church, Hempstead, Long Island; Haight, John Sylvanus; 1932, p 253.)

In St George’s m records is found: 25 Dec 1725 William Alburtis & Sarah Carmen (m was by license rather than by banns.) (The New York Genealogical & Biographical Record (quarterly), 1882, [vol 13; issue three]; New York Genealogical & Biographical Society, NY, NY, p 140 (on line at FamilySearch.)

Possible “Southard” was the maiden name of Thomas Burtis wife. Southard is mentioned as Sarah Weekes - born Burtis- "maiden" name in her obit. Have found no indication that Sarah was ever married to a Southard. A Daniel Southard is listed in the 1810 census two people from Thomas Burtis.

27Apr 1816, letter of administrations; Book C, Queens County, NY; FHL film 930752: The People of the State of New York … To: Hannah Burtis of Hempstead the widow of Thomas Burtis, administratix and William Mott and Jacob Abrams both of Hempstead administrator of all and singular the Goods, Chattels and Credits which were of the Estate of Thomas Burtis late of Hempstead in Queens County deceased send greeting. Whereas the said Thomas Burtis of Hempstead... do grant unto you Hannah Burtis administratix, and William Mott and Jacob Abrams all of Hempstead in Queens County during the minority of Mary, Henry, Sarah, Samuel, and Ruth children of the deceased...

22 Feb 1817
Early American Newspapers, series one, The National Advocate, 1817, 02-22, vol 5, issue 1307, p 4: TO BE SOLD AT AUCTION, by virtue of an order of David Lamberson, jun. esq. surrogate of the county of Queens, all the real estate of Thomas Burtis, late of Hempstead, in the county of Queens, deceased, viz:-one piece of land, with the buildings thereon, lying on the north side of the road or highway leading from Mordica [i?] Smith's mill to Hempstead south, bounded southerly by the said road, westerly by the land of Robert Davison, jun. northerly by the land of Thomas Davison, easterly by the land of Thomas Pettit and David Davison. One other piece of land, with the buildings thereon, bounded northerly by said road, easterly by land of John Remsden, southerly by land of John Pettit, jun. and David Southard
[“Southard” given as the “maiden” name of Thomas Burtis’ dau, Sarah Weeks b Burtis’ in her obit.]; westerly by land of Uriah Seamen [sic] and Robert Davison. The sale to be at public auction on the premises, the 24th of March next, at one o'clock P.M. Dated at Hempstead, 3rd February 1817
Hannah Burtis, administratix
William Mott Jacob Abram} Administrators
Fe4oaw6w A
[Same notice published in same paper on 1817-02-15, vol 5, issue 1301 & 1817-02-19, vol 5, issue 1314, p 4.]

THOMAS’ WIFE, HANNAH, AFTER THOMAS’ DEATH

1820 census: town not given, Queens, NY; NARA film 78, p 226
Hannah Burtis: males: none; females- one 10-16; one 16-26; one 26-45 (1775-1784); none 45 & over. Combining this info with Hannah’s age ranges from the 1800 (1755- 1774) & 1810 (1765- 1784) censuses, gives Hannah’s cal b as 1774 to 1775.

1830 census
Hannah is possibly listed with her son, Joseph, or possibly is listed on the same p & four lines down from Joseph, (Brooklyn Ward 3, Kings, NY; film 112; p 288.) Both listings include a female Burtis of age 40-49 giving a calculated b of 1781-1790. Three earlier censuses mentioned above render a cal b of abt 1773 -1775. (The children listed with Mrs. Burtis could be Joseph’s children, except the 20-29 year old female, who could be Joseph’s sister.)

In the 1840 census Hannah is not listed with her son, Joseph. Hannah is likely listed with her son Henry: Hempstead, Queens, NY; film 330, p 176. One female age 60-69 (cal b 1771) is listed.

1850 census- Hempstead, Queens, NY; NARA film 583, p 220, lines 17-21; enumerated 29 Aug 1850: All b NY
Michael Baldwin, 69, gentleman, $5000 [real estate]
Mary Baldwin, 50 [Hannah Burtis’ dau]
Ruth Burtis, 36, [Hannah Burtis’ dau]
Hannah Burtis, 76 [cal b 1774]
Seaman Weeks, 10

Brooklyn Eagle 3 Oct 1853, p three, column four: "Hempstead, Sept 28 Mrs Hannah Burtis, 80 years." Hannah was buried in the "Old Hempstead burial ground": Hannah Burtis born 1773, died age 28 September 1853, age 80 years (Maud Bliss Allen, _Burtis- Alburtis, Record of the Descendants..._, FHL film 872774, item one, p 200.)
JOSEPH BURTIS (died 1849) & Elizabeth Denton, parents of JOHANNA BURTIS, MARY J BURTIS, and ….

The NY state death cert (2 Nov 1897; #44046) of MARY J WILLETS (born BURTIS – d cert reads: Mary Burtis Willets), & the will of Henry A Burtis - written 1882, proved 1892 - indicate Mary’s father was JOSEPH BURTIS, & that he was born in Christian Hook (in 2009 = Oceanside, Nassau County), Queens, New York. JOHANNA MOORE (born BURTIS) was the sister of MARY J BURTIS. (1882/1892 will of HENRY A BURTIS; 1850 census - Hempstead, then Queens County- now Nassau County, NY, film 583, p 218; lines 25-28); & 1860 census (Hempstead; film 844, p 248).

JOSEPH’S Flatbush, NY – now part of Brooklyn - d register entry (Flatbush Record of births, marriages, deaths, 1847-1851, p 25; FHL film 1376354, Item 1) indicates JOSEPH d 22 May 1849 at the age of 55 (calculated b = 1794.) (Flatbush d index at italiangen.org) The d register agrees with the info listed in the d index, & adds: JOSEPH was white, lived in New Lots (which seceded from Flatbush), was a laborer, married, native born, & d from cancer of the stomach. The d register does not give place of burial.

In his 1882 (written) /1892 (proved) will, HENRY A BURTIS named some of the children of his deceased brother, JOSEPH: MARY J WILLETS, JOHANNA MOORE, ELIZABETH BLAKE, DELIA ____ (surname not given), RUTH VERITY, & THOMAS BURTIS.

The 1840 Flatbush census for JOSEPH BURTIS indicates seven females were living with him- the oldest of whom is presumably his wife, ELIZA born DENTON, & three males one of whom was presumably Joseph’s son, Thomas. CHECK BROOKLYN DEATH REGISTER FOR ELIZA BURTIS & for the following Samuel Burtis

deaths, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, Ledger, 1848-1866. Aaron, Josephine to Choclette, (No first name) FHL Film 1378813

In the 1860 census (Brooklyn 11th ward, district three, p 8, family 53)-

a Samuel Burtis, a 61 year old shoemaker, is listed with an Eliza, age 60- exactly 10 years older than the Elizabeth listed with Johanna & Mary Burtis in the 1850 Hempstead census. Perhaps this is Eliza, wife of Joseph, & Samuel the bro of Joseph. Joseph had a bro who was a minor at the d of his father in 1816. Samuel could have been 17 & still have been a minor in 1816. This works as the Samuel in the 1850 census is listed without any other Burtis with him. (NY Ward 12, NY, NY; film 548, p: 29)

all born NY.

Samuel, 61 years old, shoemaker, no real estate; $100 in personal property

Eliza, 60

Henry [no initial], 21 [an older Henry Burtis was enumerated next after Eliza Burtis in the 1850 Hempstead census. Henry was the bro of Eliza’s husband. So a son named Henry increases the likelihood that this Eliza Burtis is the same one found in the 1850 Hempstead census. There was no son listed in the 1840 census of Joseph who could have been born in 1840 or 1839. And The Samuel found in the 1850 census had no one listed with him. So, apparently Henry is not Samuel’s son. Until within a few years he was engaged in the boot and shoe business, latterly at his home on Greenwich street, which structure he had erected in 1832 and has since occupied. Mr. Burtis was familiarly known as Col. Burtis, through whom the title originated is not known. He was often called Captain, but this was from the association with the bay, and his delight in taking charge or sailing parties. He only relinquished this privilege about six years ago-then 80 years of age. Mr. Burtis was quite deaf, which affliction he contended partly resulted from his constant use of the clarinet, which instrument he used while in the Band. Deceased was a regular attendant at the M[ethodist] E[piscopal] Church service, while health permitted, uniting with that denomination during Rev. Benjamin Pillsbury's ministry, in 1857, who conducted one of the largest revivals known here. He has one sister living of a family of ten children-Mrs. Sarah Weeks, who is in her 81st year. A wife survives him. The funeral service will be held on Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock, from his late residence. The interment will be in Greenfield Cemetery.

-

WILL & CODICIL OF HENRY A BURTIS

Will listed in the index on 8 Apr 1892, vol 47, p 340; FHL film 1769664.

"In the name of God, Amen!
Hey Matt,
Yes this is Nancy. You know that Grandpa's Dad's name was George Ira Jr. and his father was George Ira Sr. George Ira Sr.'s parents name were Azebuh (Rinehart) born 1828 and died 1909. She was born in New York and buried in the Chase County Cemetery in Nebraska where George Jr., Neva, George Sr. and Lillie are burried. Azebuh's husband was William Ira or Ira William (not sure about in what order have found conflicting information) also have found the last name Burtiss. I am struggling trying to find out who William or Ira is related to. Information I have found says that he was also born in New York and he and Azebuh were married in Illinois and later moved to Iowa. William is buried in Iowa.
Sometime look up Images of Burtis Opera House in Davenport Iowa. Not sure if these were related to us, but I found it very cool because this wonderful building has Burtis on it.
Nancy

I have no idea if those are his parents or not. I have been told by two other people doing research on this that they believe Divine Burtis born May 24 1807 and Emily Bladsell were his parents. I do know that there are two George Henry Burtis' that were born approximately the same year. Trying to connect my George to the rest of the line has been very difficult.

Cheryl

The original post now 5½ years old... perhaps someone has some new information.

I am also searching for information on this same George Henry Burtis.

The 1850 census shows him living alone at age 15 in Keokuk, Lee, Iowa.

The 1856 census has him in Davenport, Scott, Iowa.

Marraige to Elvira Elizabeth Clark on 24 Mar 1857.

1870 Census (Buffalo, Scott Co., Iowa) lists children Andrew, Henry, Mary, Harriet (Andrew appears to be adopted, based on age and birth location of parents given in 1880 census).

1880 Census (Buffalo, Scott Co., Iowa) lists children Andrew, Hattie, Samuel, Jenny May, Burney B.

George is listed as being born in Illinois on each census.
1880 census lists father's birth location as New York, mother's as Missouri.

The 1880 census (Buffalo, Scott Co., Iowa) also lists the death of a Louisa Burtis, age 69, Widow, b. Missouri, father's birth location unknown, mother's birth location Missouri.

Louisa Burtis also appears in the 1860 census (Davenport, Scott, Iowa), residing with Antoine and Margaret LeClaire. Both Margaret (58) and Louisa (47) are listed as being born in Missouri.

There is a marriage record for the following couple:
Stephen H. Burtis m. Louisa Dolphin, 19 Sep 1833. Hancock Co., IL. It is possible that these are the parents of George Henry Burtis, but I have nothing to connect them yet - only dates and places that match up.

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

The Richard Brush Connection

THE RICHARD BRUSH CONNECTION TO
THE BURTIS, FINNEY, RHODES, BINFORD, LOFTIN, BAKER FAMILIES
OF TEXAS

Compiled by: Harold Thomas Rhodes

Richard Brush, born most likely in England of Puritan parents. Names of his parents have not been discovered yet. Probably came to Massachusetts as a servant or apprentice to Joseph Cooke (ancestor of Laura Fidelia Jones) to escape persecution by the Royalists. He was a witness on the deed the citizens of Huntington, LI drew up in purchasing land from the Indians on Long Island. It is believed he was a mate on a ship and not available at Huntington at all times. Most likely the mate to Ambrose Sutton.

He was a home and land owner by 1 January 1668 and married Joanna Sammis about this time. He was townsman, collector, and trustee for the town from 1692 to 1705. Large land owner in the Huntington area.

Several of his descendants, John Burtis, Gilbert Brush, and Elkannah Brush, moved to Utica, New York area to get in on the boom caused by the building of the Erie Canal. It should be noted that Laura’s father, Joseph Jones, was at Utica during the boom. When the boom went to bust. Joseph Jones moved to Huntsville, TX before 1849. John Burtis moved first to Ohio then to Fayette County, Tennessee. Later one of his sons, John Smith Burtis, moved to Texas. He married Alice Finney daughter Laura Fidelia Jones. Gibert Brush died in Vorona, New York. Elkannah Brush moved to Texas in October 1834 and received a Spanish Land Grant near Refugio on Sarco Creek; later became involved in the Texas fight for independence. He took part in the capture of Goliad and on 10 October 1935 signed the Goliad Declaration of Independence.

By 1845 the Descendants of Richard Brush of Huntington, LI had put their mark on the State of Texas and local counties in Texas, as the Brush and Burtis Families had put their mark on Long Island.

Harold Rhodes, Great-grandson of Laura F. (Jones)(Finney) Rhodes and the GrGreat-grandson of Elkannah Brush.

References:
Madison County Historial Commission, A History of Madison County, Texas.
