BURY, coal miners in Missouri/Kansas

I have recently found that my Great grandfather was a coal miner at Brush Creek Coal Mine in Kansas City,MO. My great grandmother gave birth to my Grandfather at the coal mine on April 6th, 1904; my grandfather name, Frank Bury. His father was listed as "A.Bury". The ancestry is French and am looking for French Bury coal miners from around that region.

Lori Minds

I have family Bible for Daniel Bury, born 1803 Switzerland. Believe he arrived Baltimore 1824.

Other Burys from Switzerland on this ship were; Andrew, John, & Joseph (a physician). It appears some of these may have settled Fairfield Co. OH. Would like to correspond with others researching Burys in Fairfield Co. OH.

Nigel:

I am another descendant of John Colbrook Bury. Rowena Hurst asked me to reply to you.

At the present time we know a; great deal about john Colbrook Bury and his descendants and some about both of his wives. We have a little information regarding his father and his siblings, but little more. There is to my knowledge no information about his mother or her family which could be the Colbrook connection or it could be somewhere in his fathers line, which we have not been able to uncover as yet. If you read Rowena's previous post we know that his father was an Officer in the British Army and he had an older brother who was an officer in the Army as well. I don't know if there is any way of tracking either of them through British military records? I wish I could help you more, and would be interested if you came across any connection between the Colbrook family and the Bury family

Can you tell me where the link to the Colbrook (Colebrooke) family comes in? I am doing a single name study on the Colebrooke family. They were bankers and much involved in the East India Company.

Regards,

Nigel
French Bury Immigrants 1900-1920

Here is a list of some of the Burys I found who listed their birth place as France on the 1900-1920 Census. This is just spelling Bury, you may also need to consider Buri or Burri if from a German speaking part of France.

Also, I never could find my Bury ancestor in 1900 Census because it was indexed as Burg -- a lot of times that handwritten y looks like g and I've found many Bury records by searching for Burg, including my ancestors listing on his ship.

the format for the following list is:
Surname Given Age Sex Race State County Township CensusYear

1900 Census
BURY ALFRED 47 M W MT YELLOWSTONE 4-WD BILLINGS 1900
BURY FRANK A 50 M W MN CARVER 2-WD CHASKA 1900
BURY IDA 47 F W KS CHEROKEE MINERAL TWP 1900

1910 Census
BURY ALFRED 54 M W MT YELLOWSTONE 1-WD BILLINGS 1910
BURY ALFRED 55 M W MT YELLOWSTONE 4-WD BILLINGS 1910
BURY HARRY 65 M W PA PHILADELPHIA 21-WD PHILADELPHIA 1910
BURY JOHN E 27 M W DC WASHINGTON ED 226 1910
BURY JOSEPH L 22 M W CA SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO 1910
BURY THERESA 50 F W MA HAMPDEN 2-WD HOLYOKE 1910

1920 Census
BURY AL 35 M W KS CRAWFORD GROSS; LINCOLN TWP 1920
BURY ALFRED 64 M W MT YELLOWSTONE 1-WD; BILLINGS; TWP 1 N & 1 S 1920
BURY BANDRAY 34 M W KS CHEROKEE ROSELAND; ROSS TWP 1920
BURY CAROLINE 71 F W NY CATTARAUGUS PERSIA 1920
BURY CHRISTOPHER 62 M W PA ALLEGHENY 21-WD PITTSBURGH 1920
BURY GEORGE 69 M W NJ ESSEX 1-WD; ORANGE 1920
BURY HENRY 49 M W NY RICHMOND RICHMOND 1920
BURY MARIE 51 F W ND BURLEIGH 6-WD BISMARCK; LINCOLN TWP 1920
BURY MARTIN 72 M W CO ADAMS LOWER PLATTE 1920

If you need the detailed records for any of these let me know and I can send you the page.
Many American Burys were Buri in Baden-Württemberg

I tracked by grandfather Hubert Bury of Pennsylvania back to an 1857 birth in Baden-Württemberg, Germany and was very surprised in the course of my research to discover that many Bury families in the United States originated from the Buri families in Baden. The majority born in Germany in the 1800's eventually emigrated from 1850 to 1890 and I have compiled a listing at least 50 immigrant families who went to many different US States, all going back to Buri ancestors in the 1600's. The surname in the 1700's in German church records is usually Burri, in the early 1800's it is becomes Buri, and by the 1850's it most often appears as Bury. In America almost all use the Bury spelling on arrival. All came through the port of New York but dispersed to many different states. The area near Donaueschingen, Germany is a hotbed for Bury ancestors in the 1600-1800's, and since it is located only 15 miles north of Switzerland, these lines also tie into the Swiss Buri's in Schaffhausen. Most of the German Buri's are Catholics, although my grandfather converted to Protestant when he met his Lutheran bride in Switzerland.

Trees of Bury Buri Burri in Baden-Württemberg

On Rootsweb World Connect (link below) I uploaded hundreds of Bury, Buri and Burri ancestors in the 1700 to 1870 period from Donaueschingen, which is in Baden about 15 miles north of Switzerland. This info is from the original church records, and I joined the records into families where there was certain evidence. Otherwise, they are left as unconnected families when I couldn't identify a previous father. I left the spelling just as found in the church records -- so sometmes Bury, Buri, Burri appear in one family. You do see a pattern that it was Burri in the 1700's, Buri by 1800 and Bury is more common by 1850. Almost every male in these families I have studied so far eventually came to America in the 1820 to 1900 period, so if your Bury was German you may want to explore Donaueschingen (and all the surrounding villages in Baden and into Schaffhausen, Switzerland) since there were so many Bury families here. Most are found in the Catholic churches, although my ancestor converted to Protestant in America.

http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SRCH&db=buri&a...

This James C. Bury and Mary Ann Saugrain Bury had the following children: Anne C., Genevieve, Ethel S., & Alfred Saugrain Bury... do any of these names seem familiar?? As far as I know James was born and died in St. Louis. From his death certificate he was born in 1841 and died in 1916 and **IF** the certificate is correct, his father's family came from Ireland. I am looking for a picture of Mary Ann, his wife.

We may be decsendants of this Bury, though I do not know for sure. My grandfather Frank Bury was born in Kansas City, MO in 1904. I do not know who his father was, but I would imagine they were related in some way? According to one census record, his father was born in Kansas(maybe supposed to be KS City,MO), another record shows his father born in France. There might have been some connection with them both being in the MO/KS region. I am currently trying to find out more on my Bury line.

His mother Maggie was born in Iowa.

Did you have ancestors that were Bury and from the Kansas City area?
Thanks, Hubert, for the biographical information on the German BURYs. My BURY ancestors came from Mietesheim, Alsace, France. I have traced them back as early as 1767 from that Commune. If you ever come across any BURYs from that area, please contact me or post on this board.

Lori - my BURY ancestors came from Mietesheim, Alsace, France. My gg-grandfather, J. George BURY immigrated to the US around 1847, was listed in the 1850 census in Buffalo, Erie County, NY and had made his way to Minnesota by 1857. Other more distant BURY family members from Mietesheim settled in West Orange, Essex County, NJ as early as 1860s or so. No know BURY family members from Missouri or Iowa. Do you know what town in France your BURY ancestors were from?

let me quote from the family history written by J. Melville Warwick: John Colbrook Bury told his son Edward Bury of Morpeth, Ontario, Canada that his father was Major William Bury of the British Army.......and that he himself was born at 52 Cheapside, London, England at 4am on March 6th, 1764. He has 2 older brothers: George and Richard, he latter dying yong, and a sister Harriet. George Bury was still living in the 1850's , age 96. At that time he was Capt George Bury (retired) British Army and was living on the Island of Cyprus. Harriet Bury was in the 1850's living in Wales at the age of 92. Her married name was Archer. Central registration of Births, Marriage and Deather's in England did not begin until 1836. Etc....
I have later info on the family.
John Colbrook Bury married Dorothy Sherwood 1788. the rest of their children I mentioned in one of my replies to you (bury like fury)
