Busey and Bussey Families

During the 1950's Miss Maud McClure Kelly of Birmingham, AL, had data that indicated that the Busey and Bussey families of Maryland were two separate families. They became confused in the records because of the phonetic spelling of both names.

Apparently, Paul Busey and George Bussey came to America about the same time but were not related. Mrs. Alice Leonard of Laredo, TX, wrote to my mother-in-law in 1958, that once she made this distinction, she was able to clear up a lot of the confusion she had between the two families.

Has anyone come across Miss Kelly's data or found the same information in the records?

I have a definate mothers name, Nancy
he also is somehow related to Temperance Busey Moody Smith as he was living with her in 1860 census. he also has a cousin named Thomas Busey that was born 10 years earlier.
My fathers name is also John but i have yet to be able to link him to a father. His father died (im assuming) before 1850 and i can't find them on a census before 1950. there were also sibling Nancy C. and another. I also found them living with a Betsy and Wylie Prince in 1950. Maybe an older sister???? with a child Lemuel Prince but so far no luck. . . Would love to figure this out :)

Thank you for the reply. At this time, it could be anybody's guess if it's him. I have a lot of information on Elizabeth Jane Busey and her descendents, but nothing but 1 census for her parents.

1850 Iowa, Henry Co. census, Mt. Pleasant Township: Household #297

L.W. Busey, head, 39, bKY, farmer, $1200
Mary Busey, wife, 31, bTN
David, son, 19, bIN
Mary A., daughter, 16, bIN
Elizabeth J., daughter, 14, bIN
Samuel M., son, 12, bIL
Rachel R., daughter, 9, bIA
James K. They had a daughter "Louise (Carter) Busey" who married 2nd John Landesco.
This Chas. B. Busey was the only son of Samuel T. and Mary E. (Bowen) Busey of Champaign Co, IL. It was for Mary E.
Sarah Ann BUSEY (BUSSEY/BUSY) & John L. HUBBARD, KY, 1800s

Searching for information on the ethnic heritage of Sarah Ann “Sallie” or “Sally” BUSY/BUSEY or possibly BUSSEY, born about 1836 in Taylor Co, KY to determine if she, was in fact, of Cherokee descent. Sally married John L. HUBBARD who was born 30 Jun 1832 in Taylor Co, KY. John & Sally had a daughter Nannie Garland HUBBARD who is of special interest, as she is the ancestor of a family who is attempting to prove (or disprove) that Sally and her daughter Nannie are Cherokee Indians. Nannie married Dr, John Charles BABB 12 Feb 1879, Smith Co, KS and died in Enid, Oklahoma. It is family lore that the HUBBARDs were successful tobacco farmers in Kentucky, and were moved by the U. S. Government to Oklahoma. Attached is a brief 2 generation HUBBARD Family History. If any of these names, dates and places are familiar, or if you know how one goes about proving Cherokee heritage, your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Dr. Dixon G.
Hello,

I am trying to establish my maternal grandmother's father. Her name was Sarah Catharine Busey Birney. She was the daughter of one of the Busey's in Champaign, Ill. I ws told she had four sisters and that her father founded Busey Bank. I see there are two Busey's, but do not see any decendants from Samuel Busey. One of hr sisters names was Clara who married an attorney named Dunlap, but my search ends about there. Hoping you could shed some light.

Thank you.

Would you know if any of Jacob Busey's descenants settled in Tennessee ??? My G-G-Grandfather was Thomas J. (T.J.) Busey in Canon County Tennessee. He married Mary Fann. They had children, of whom my G-Grandfather was a middle child. His name was James A. Busey and he married Elizabeth (Betty) "Viola" Mingle in Cannon County. They then came to Gibson and Dyer Counties, in West Tennessee and settled, having children, of whom my Grandmother, Beulah Busey-Smith, was one. She had Aunts who were Busey's, and who were living in Missiouri. I believe that I can remember my Grandmother telling me that her ancestors were "Laws". From what I have been able to discover, I believe Jacob may be my missing link ancestor. Any information which you might be able to provide would be most greatly appreciated !!! Sincerely, Elaine

My grandmothers grandfather was John Busey and I believe him to have been born in Indiana as well. He had a missing arm not a peg leg (but that could have been the result of mistaken memories or something). He was in the Civil War, and married a Mary Melinda Julien.
Re: Arthur Busey parentage

If your Arthur Busey was born 29 Feb 1796 and married 1822 to Sarah Tinsley, then he would be a son of Isaac Busey, whose ancestry is found at www.geocities.com/paschkep/Busey/
According to Harmison & Rouse, Arthur did have a son Tyler Elliott Busey (1848-) who married Fannie Jones and had 8 children, the last of whom was Helen Busey, born 1894. She was born in Shelby Co, KY.
You will need to verify all of this. The Harmison & Rouse article was written 50 years ago., before it was so easy to verify certain data people submitted to them.
Re: Looking for descendants of Matthew BUSEY & Edith Philpot

Cousin Wilda,

Did you get any responses to your posting of July '04? Sorry it's been so long but I rarely look at these messages. The Busey side of my family is pretty well documented from Paul1 in 1651 Maryland thru 12 generations. I've been concentrating for the last few years on my mother's side which came thru MA, CT, VT and Chicago.

Matthew and Edith Philpot, my 4g-grandparents, were pretty adventourous souls. He moved from Maryland to NC, married and they both then ventured into the wilderness of Kentucky. There were problems with the natives in those days but they survived.

Samual Wales and Catherine Siegler continued the venturesome spirit moving on to Indiana and finally to the rich soils of central Illinois.

My line then goes through:
Matthew Wales and Elizabeth Bush,
Matthew Daniel and Anne Hurd,
Robert Oscar and Maud Waldo who moved out of Urbana,
Paul Robert and Helen Edwards, my parents.

Over the years I've been drawn back to the east coast and have lived in both Maryland and Connecticut.

Always nice to meet a cousin.

Hugh W.
Busey in Chanpaign, IL

You pose an interesting question about Lyman Busey Mathews.
In the early to mid-1800's several branches of the Buseys
settled in Champaign. I looked through my records which are
largely from a family Bible from my branch and find no trace
of a Mathews family. I do know however that my grandfather
had a brother, Frank Lyman Busey. I do not know where the
Lyman came from. His mother (my g-grandmother) was was Anne
E. Hurd and his father was Matthew Daniel Busey. Sorry I can't
be of more help. Pam Paschke is correct in suggesting the
Harmison articles. You may contact me directly for more
information. hbusey@att.net

Dennis, anything new on Charles Busey of the PA 87th since you posted back in 2001? I'm particularly curious as to where you picked up his middle name and the alternate spelling of Busser, as I haven't noted those in anything I've come across.

I have a few sources on line: http://homepage.mac.com/ntaber/Genealogy/ and have tracked his widow and surviving child, Minnie L. (Busey) Fry, somewhat. Everything else I learned about him is from the Civil War pension files, which it sounds like you've already seen.
