Dear Rebecca,

I'm delighted to receive your reply. My husband's father migrated to the United States in 1909 from the Ottoman Empire. He was fom a village in the Hakkari Mountains in modern-day southern Turkey. He settled first in Chicago, married there and then moved with his family to Knox, IN in the 1920s. I'll contact you privately with more information.

Mary Yonan

Mary,

I have done some research. It is my husband's family and there are alot of holes and not alot of info. My husband is descended from Rashid Yonan. He (my husband) and his brothers and our children are the last of this line as far as we know. Rashid had a brother, Joseph, who has many descendents that we know and have had a reunion with for the past 2 years. These people are all cousins to my husband and children. Rashid and Joseph were Assyrian who immigrated to the US in early 1900's and all ended up in Gary, IN area. Would love, love , love to learn more.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, we did get a copy of Johannes Georg's will during our trip to York. If I remember correctly, his wife was the executor of the will. Like you, we have been unable to find a birth record. Would you like to receive a copy of this will?

This past week in Canton, Ohio we were able to find more info on Adam Conrad Stermer, but I have not found the last name of his wife Elizabeth, or his son's name. The 1850 census listed only 3 daughters. I have inferred that he had a son that had already left the house by the 1850 census, because the 1870 census showed that his wife Elizabeth was living with a grandson named James Stermer (and a grand-daughter named Olive Mylar). Also, we found info on a Adam A. Stermer (which I think is Adam Conrad's grand-son), married to Ella C. Mathias in 1880. I think Adam A. was born c. 1860. This date raises the probability that he is Adam C's grand-son, because this date is too late in Adam C.'s life for Adam C. to be his father.
The mystery always deepens with each trip to the geneological libraries.

Hi!
I am still trying to get settled here in Las Vegas. How I wish I were in either San Diego, Ca. or around Apache Jct., Arizona instead.....however, this is where my youngest son is an I am going to be here for awhile.

You mentioned "Johannes married to Eva Brose"...this is incorrect. His name is Johannes Georg Stuermer and by German custom was called Georg. His mother's maiden name was Muellerin not Millerin. The -in ending was used to denote that it was her actual maiden name and not the name by a previous marriage. Doing research in the German records trains you to watch for these things.....and a gratitude for those who had nice penmanship!

Anyway, Johannes Georg was the eldest of the family with your Johannes being next in line after him. Your Johannes and Barbara (Moetz) Stuermer's eldest son Adam Conrad Stormer went to Ohio at a young age and had descendents there. So many of the family migrated there as well during the early Northwest Territory days. He is mentioned in your Johannes Stuermer aka John Stermer's will in York Co., Pa. By the way, did you get a copy of that will while there? So far I have not been able to locate a birth/christening record for him anywhere. That doesn't mean there isn't one. It just hasn't been found to date.

Wayne

Charles, thanks for your message. My father, brother and I have been busy lately, going to York, PA and Canton, OH for more research. Given the info in your recent messages, we have found several Stermer families descended from Johannes (married to Eva Brose), but at this time, our information on the descendants of Johannes (married to Barbara Moetz) far exceeds the Stermer-Brose tree. We are most definitely interested in learning more from your findings. We are preparing a large-scale graphic that shows every descendant of Johan Georg Stermer (married to Anna Rosina Millerin), and right now we are hovering between 900-1000 persons.

Glad to hear from you! I am happy that you all had a fine trip. You are clearly one of Les' sons. It is too bad that you didn't get the chance to meet Curtis though. Wonderful guy. Your dad wishes to have one of the copies I have left. No problem as soon as I can get into the storage unit, but I am going to make certain they get one back there in York Co. as well via cdertified mail receipt this time! Have a great Thanksgiving Day!

Thanks very much for the information on the two Stuermer brothers. My father, brother and I just returned from a 2 day trip to York, PA to collect more Stermer family information. Just before leaving for this trip, my father received correspondence from you regarding the Stuermer vs. Stormer lines. Perfect timing for our trip. Now we are more curious than ever for the additional information which you have. We look forward to continuing our correspondence with you.

I saw your post and thought you'd like this information. John Stermer m. Barbara Moetz but he was born Johannes Stuermer. he fought in the American Revolution and was at the battle of Yorktown. His brother Johannes Georg Stuermer likewise was in the same war and was married to Eva Brose. The family spelt the family name themselves as STUERMER. Those who went west generally adopted teh anglicized form of Stormer while those who remained in the eastern part usually took the form Stermer in the english records. Abraham Stuermer was listed as Stormer in cooper's NewYork militia, and Wilhelm Stuermer (William Stormer) is not known to have participated so far.

Mary Anne, in previous messages, you've indicated you are descended from Henry Stermer (Stoermer). In my family tree, there is a Henry J. Stermer, son of Johannes Stermer and Barbara Metz. Henry was one of 12 children, and I am descended from his brother David T. Stermer. Our only info on Henry is that he married a woman named Elizabeth (no last name known) and one son named John.

Is there a connection? Perhaps John had a brother named Henry?

Which Brother

My grandfather was Henry Stermer (Stoermer)and I believe he was the son of Herman Stermer (Stoermer) and Elizabeth (?). His siblings were: William, Catherine, George, Mary of Knox County, Indiana. I have been in contact with Becky Millet, a descendent of George Stermer and it does appear that my grandfather is from this family.
Catherine Stermer married Frederick Busher, Knox County, In - that's why I was looking for descendents of theirs.
thanks, mary anne humphreys
