Charles Bushey born in Vermont Died in Wisconsin

I am looking for information on Charles S Bushey married to Sarah. Listed in the 1870 US Census as living in Appleton Ward 4, Outagamie, Wisconsin. Served in the Civil War. Childrem Frances, Ida, Charles, Guy & Mary. US Census says he was born in Vermont and Sarah in New York. Oral Family History had him coming from Canada. It is told that he was French and married to a Cree Indian woman. The family sur name could have been changed to Boucher. Can not find anything about his parents.

We may be looking for the same family line. I am looking for informaiton on Charles Bushey born in Vermont 1835 - wife was Sarah. Served in the Civil War from Clayton Wisconsin. Oral family history said he was kicked out of Canada by the British. I have wondered in the spelling of the name was changed from a French name ie Borcher which could sound like Bushey in English.

I have been working on a family tree for Bouchat (present day spelling) and have been having a heck of a time locating family with all the variant's of name changes at the turn of the century with churchs going to english base spelling. Anyway.... This is some information I found about the Ethinic origin of this surname.

From Morton Montgomery's History of Berks County, Pennsylvania, 1909 edition, pp. 16-20.

French

Among the Huguenots, there were many settlers with French names, which may be found in the lists of the first taxables to the east of the Schuylkill. The spelling has been changed so much that they can hardly be recognized, this having been done by the assessors t conform to the English or the German pronunciation. Some of these names and changes will be enumerated: BARDO or BARTO was Bardeau; BUSHONG, Beauchamp; BUSHOUR, Boucher or Buchat; BERTOLET, Berthollet; BAST, Baste; DEISHER, Duchere; DETURCK, De Turcq; DIPPERY, Duprez; DILPLAIN, Delaplaine; LESSIG, Lesecq; LORAH, Larue; MONYER, Monnier; PLANK, De la Plank; SHARADIN, Giradin; SHAPPELL, Chappelle; SHOMO, Chaumont. Several of the unchanged names are BOYER, DELCAMP, DELONG, LEVAN.

Full listing at page below:

http://berks.pa-roots.com/library/NationalitiesInEarlyBerks....

This would make sense. My grandfather was born 1911 in Ashland, ME. SS application lists his parents as Mary Carney and Thomas Bushey. Living in Mapleton, ME very close on the maps to Ashland. If the info on Census I found on Mary is correct then she was born June 1892. She would have been 16 when they got married in 1908? Not so uncommon in farm families in those days. Then they had Henry Bushey Sept 4, 1911 he was born in Ashland, ME. Then Henry married my grandmother Lena Grass on 9/18/1937. According to the marriage information you found he resided in Mapleton and Lena was from Masardis, ME again very close to Ashland and Mapleton, ME. I think you found something. These original documents should include parental information correct?

Yes, Thank you, that is my grandparents. I am having a difficult time with the Bushey side of the family because he disowned my grandmother and father when my father was only an infant (1938-39?) I only knew his name and my grandmother would never elaborate any further. I believe I have found my grandfathers information Henry Bushey born Sept 4, 1911 in Ashland, Aroostook County, Maine. I ordered a copy of Social Security application paperwork. His parents are listed as Thomas Bushey and Mary Carney. I can locate what I believe is Mary Carney on a 1900 Census record. I cannot find Thomas Bushey though. I believe he would have been born about 1890 +- somewhere around Ashland, Presque Isle area somewhere. Not sure though as I have found some records hinting towards New Brunswick Canada?? I am so new at this that I get stumped pretty easily.. Anything useful?

Bushey Family of Maine Cont.

Just began my family tree project this year and I have learned a lot from those old posts from years past. My maiden name was Bushey. The posts from 2000-2002 regarding the Bushey's from Hermon well that is my family actually and I can expand on that some. George Bushey Sr. is my father and his parents were Lena (Grass) Bushey and Henry Bushey. Henry and Lena were both from Aroostook County Maine. Henry disowned my grandmother and my father. Lena and George then moved to the Wing Rd in Hermon, they did own horses and she went on to marry Frank Nye. I have found records for Henry Bushey and his parents are listed as Thomas Bushey and Mary (Carney) Bushey. I believe I have found her parents but thats where my trail goes cold... Anyone out there currently researching the Bushey family from the Ashland/Mapleton,Mesardis,Sheriden, Presque Isle MAINE area???? I would love to hear from you!

Everybody plays this "game" of genie hunting a bit differently; however, my next step would be to find the death info for Thomas since you know where he spent part of his life and likely his death. That should give you the information regarding his birth depending on who reported it and what they knew about him!!!

Happy hunting!! Jeanine

I just donated 18" auburn pony tail to the American Cancer Society, I maybe should have sent it to you. HOWEVER, you will find that the little treasures of history that you are able to find become more valuable as time passes, not sure why that is, and maybe that is not so for everyone, but it has been true for me, I'd rather research than eat any day!!
Entireoy welcome!! THING IS . . . where did the name Napoleon come from? is he a brother to Edmund? is he the father of Edmund? Somehow, you have to still connect that name because these things don't just pop up in people's pipe dreams . . . someone has heard them and it is our job to figure out why, where, when, how??? Guess that's what makes it so much fun to do the research!!! Jeanine

Just found a census record for 1920 indicating that the parents of Nellie are Edmund and Emma Bushey, not Napoleon as you have stated. Shows that Victor and Nellie are living with them and they have three children also, so guess you can say it is a three generation census record!!

I found a couple of Napoleons, but age is not right, it is not a moot issue since he is not the father of Dorothy!!

If you don't have it yet, I can send you census record direct. thanks, Jeanine at jreck@ecenet.com
Some time ago I wrote to Bushey, the town in Hertzford,England, and from the town historian received this reply " there is not now any Busheys in the town and she could not find any records. But she did say that many who immigrated from there would say they were so and so from bushey, this getting their surname from the town. It, the town is known for its art. I also found a relative who came into canada from Liverpool. I would assume until further proof that the name is English or Scott (my father-in-law said they were descendant from Scottland, which could be true as it belonged to England. Maybe this will help you to look in the right direction. Good Luck!

I have a couple of those baby books my parents got when I was born and they filled some of them out....one of them has a small family tree page, and that's where the "Napoleon Brillion" came from...as well as some other misleading information, such as my grandmother on my father's side being not his bio mom (whom I've managed to find), and my grandfather on my mom's side, as I just found out yesterday (after 50-wah wah years!) that he was adopted!!!

Sometimes it's incredibly rewarding...other times I just want to scream and pull my hair out... :O

Val

Bushey-Rioux Connection

My Great-Grandfather, George Rioux, was adopted by Phillip Bouchier, after his mother, Virginia, remarried after the death of George's father, Onasim Rioux. They lived in Virginia City, Canada, Quebec. George went on to live under the "Bushey" surname, married a "Virginia" and had 5 children, one being my grandfather Onasim Eugene Bushey, who married Rachel Lozier. There were numerous legal name changes thru the years until the Rioux name was not used anymore. Wilder, Vermont is where my father, Theodore Joseph Bushey, and his brothers Alfonse (Buster) Bushey and Archibald (Archie) Joseph Bushey grew up. My father was born in 1909 and died in 1995, so the timeframe for all this was 1850's-?...would love to hear from anybody with new info! cmcewen18@aol.com
Corinna McEwen
