On the Cert it said Walter Butt age 40 father James Butt master mariner deceased.
Married Janet Voisey/Cakebread 1938.

So his dad was James not Alfred. I don't know where Walter was born and I'm not sure if the age is right too. I believe he died in Southampton as my Nan said she looked after him up to his death (they were separated by then). I also think he died of Cancer..... memories of Nan again.

I don't remember Mum going to his funeral but I do remember her and Dad going to Uncle Frank's (Nan's partner) funeral in the late 60's.

So I have to reckon he died between 1956 and 1969 at the latest. Still can't find him!!

I doubt he's on any of the trees I have connections with. I'm sure I am way way out with the information I have put on my tree................... oh woh is me.

I will find the right stuff though.

Jenny

Some days I could just chop it all up...(the paperwork) or knock my ancesters on the noggin for muddling it all up or not leaving accurate data or telling tall tales.

I think my grandfather was a little careful with his age on the marriage cert (finally found) and or my grandmother was being bitchy when she said he was a LOT older than her. She also said he was prone to exagerating his position in life and I'm wondering if he hasn't stretched his fathers as well. I can't find him in the 1911 census or now know where he was born. His father's name and occupation is also different according to the cert. And (scuse grammar) wow they married well after mum was born!! From all of this I can't pin down his death although I now know he was alive when my Mum got married in 1956, because that cert does't say deceased or am I being too accepting of the more recent records.

Walter Butt where are you, who are you and where do you come from?

Thank you both for responding.

I have found an A. R. Butts listed as a passenger in 1853 along with a J. E. Thorner who is also on my family tree on a ship arriving in NYC from California.

I don't know if it's the same man, but J. E. Thorner's nephew, Robert Thorner, married Margaret Forster. Margaret's mother's maiden name was Butts. Margaret's oldest brother's name was Archibald, so it's possible that A stands for Archibald. That's a long shot, but I've been unable to figure out where the name Archibald came from.

While it's possible that some of the Butts did move south after the Civil War, I don't have any record of that. The Butts in my tree all lived in New York State and Ontario, Canada.

Lyle, while researching my family tree I found an individual who I believe is related to me, but I have'nt yet been able to make the connection. He was on the 1850 census for Walker County, Alabama. His name is Aquilla R. Butt and he is listed as being 20 years old and he is in the household of William Butt age 42. This has been very frustrating for me because it seems that as I traced my family back the name changed from Butts to Butt sometime after the Civil War. No explanation as to why. My line of the Butt/Butts family always appears to be in the southern United States. South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi. It is believed that they originally migrated form Virginia to South Caroling. So, Aquilla R. Butt is probably not related to your A.R. Butt. Interesting coincidence though.

Leah was born in Greenspond.
Are you related to Stella Butt?
Re: BUTT FAMILY - Virgil Roscoe Butt, Virgil Gordon Butt

Gus - You seem knowledgable on this family. Can you shed any light on the following:

I was researching my Higgins line today and came across a sad event.

Up until today, I did not know we were connected to the Butt family line.

One of my ancestors, Martha Higgins b. 1884-1887 in Yancey or Mitchell County, NC - married Virgil Gordon Butt b. 3-10-1882 (son of Virgil Roscoe Butt & Dollie Electra Brown) - Virgil & Martha (Higgins) Butt were married on 1-17-1914 in Bakersville, Mitchell County, NC.

What is disturbing is that on September 10 (or 11th) 1916, Virgil took his own life (McDowell County). I knew that Martha had died on September 29, 1916. When I find her death record, I find that he had shot her first but she lingered for 18-19 days before dying of her injuries. Her father, Jason Cornelius Higgins - was the brother to my Great Grandfather, John Nelson Higgins.

I was wondering if you had heard the story or knew any particulars. I am still trying to find out what happened to Martha's sister, Emma Higgins. I believe that I found her on the 1900 census for Bakersville, Mitchell County, NC, born Dec. 1883, living in the home of an illegible & Elizer Hawkins, as a servant. I cannot find her after that.
Read your post and I would be interested in anything you have on the Butt Family. I live in Boston and my great grandfather was from St John's and came here in 1890. As far as any sibling god only knows. I do know that his father's name was George and his mothers name was Margaret and that there are twins all through the family. So if your Butt family has twins in it then we are probably from the same family tree. You can email me at nani6591@comcast.net with any questions.

Thank you in advance

Photo of A. R. Butts

A relative has a photo of an A. R. Butts that I've been unable to identify. My gr gr gr gr gr grandfather was Oliver Butts, ~1766-1834. He was from Dutchess County NY and emigrated with his family to Markham, ON in 1798. However, I've been unable to find anyone amongst his descendants with the initials A. R.

My guess is that the photo was taken in the 1870s or 80s. I"ve searched ancestry.com to no avail. The photo came from a relative in Buffalo, NY.

I've posted the image on imgur.com

http://i.imgur.com/pptbr.jpg

Does anyone recognize this guy?

Lyle

http://www.copelan.net

Hi,
I am working on my family history of the Butt's from Newfoundland. The earliest relatives I have are Roger and Sarah Butt from the early 1800's. I also know that Sarah and Roger are buried at the Old Cemetery by the beach in Lumsden.
Any earlier family information would be wonderful.
Thank you,
Sarah
Hi,
from my research and i've come to a sub-conclusion regarding the BUTT family line.
I believe that (considering Pakistan & India as a collaborative land were known as India) when India became part of the British Empire many English inhabited India and when they left took not just resources but people, women and also names. This would be an appropriate conclusion and can link Joshua then Archibald Butt and so forth and the others than left England for France and Germany, in addition during WWI/WWII/ England, America, Germany and France all had a hand in this (forming the as we now know it: Butt/Butts/Butte/Botts)
however, with reference to a previous poster on this thread who claims that a Doctor Butt served Henry 8th - i'm not certain where this links in however it is possible that considering i haven't read about this anywhere nor has it come up in any of my research that this fact cannot be considering as evidence against my theory. If you have anything to oppose this hypothesis of where the BUTT line derives, please contact me on my e-mail:

mai.bint.tariq@live.co.uk

BUTT's actually inhabit most of the land in Pakistan right now .. which is really suprising but i also found that it's from the Kashmiri side of the world - meaning Pakistan so that links in also i remember my dad actually did tell me something about Pakistan and Butt's and i think he also mentioned something about Iran.

I have posted a review of "History of the Fire-Lands," published in 1879 by WW Williams on the "Firelands History Website": http://firelands.wordpress.com.
Included in this book is a biography and portrait of George Butt, born in 1834, who established a studio in Norwalk, Ohio in 1869. Mr. Butt was a Union Officer in the Civil War and an accomplished artist before and after the war.
The Firelands, or Sufferers' Land, was set aside for "Sufferers" in Connecticut whose homes were burned by the British during the American Revolution. It includes present day Huron, Erie, Ottawa, and Ashland Counties in Ohio.
My post includes a short synopsis of "History of the Fire-Lands" and the Table of Contents with links to the book's histories, biographies and illustrations of the pioneers and their families.
I invite you to check out this interesting biography of George Butt and other pioneers of the Firelands.

yes, I'm aware of the information for Major Butt. The information I have entered, which I thought was made clear in the original notice, is for Major Butt's first cousin, also named Archibald Butt, who is my great-great-great grandfather. The dates entered are not typos - they are for my ggg grandfather, NOT his cousin, who is Major Butt & died on the Titanic in 1912. Due to his public position as friend and advisor to President Taft (as well as others)I have an abundance of information on the major - it is my grandfather I am trying to locate info on, who is the Major's first cousin on the Butt family side. Unfortunately, people read "relations of Major Archibald Butt" and don't pay attention to what I wrote.

Good Morning,
I believe there are a couple of typos in your last post that may confuse others--
Major Archibald Willingham "Archie" Butt was b. 26 September 1865 and d. 16 April 1912.
Without the given name of your great-great-great grandfather can only assume the Major Butt you mention is Archibald Willingham Butt, b. 26 Sept 1866 in Augusta, Georgia. His siblings included: Edward Henkel, John Decatur, Lewis Ford & Mary Ann Butt--most born in Augusta, Georgia.

The above Archibald Willingham Butt d. 19 Apr 1912 in the Titanic and was married to Pamela Robertson Boggs

Dalene

MY Archibald (1st cousin to the Major) was born in 1851. On his death certificate, his parents are said to be Archibald & Mary Doeman Butt. The mother's name has been recorded as Dorman in some places, and Doeman in others. I believe it is the generation after my Archibald where the name was changed from Butt to Butts in my ancestry. My family comes from VA/WV, but I know that the major was from Augusta GA.

Have a great many Archibald Butt men in my files. Please advise as to his siblings and what states he is connected with. Many by this name were in West Virginia & Virginia & many moved on to other states. Also, name the person you believe is connected.
