Thomas and Esther Butter

Looking for any information for Thomas and Esther Butter, Irish immigrants, prior to the 1860 census. They were living in Avon, New York at that time and eventually moved to Lenawee County, Michigan. I would like to know where in Ireland they came from, what ship they came to America on, etc. Anything! Thanks so much, Shannon

Nathaniel Butters/Batters Elva (Butter) DeGeer, Canada

I found this but I have not been able to place in DeGeer family tree.

Manitoba Free Press City of Winnipeg, March 29, 1879
Samuel DeGeer
How Manitoba Lost An Immigrant.
The Montreal Gazette tells how, as follows:
It is not often that the interminable pine forest of the River Gatineau, of which Mr. Alonzo Wright, M. P., is “King,” affords the material to romance, but yesterday afternoon a Gazette reporter was made acquainted with the following facts. It will be understood that the Gatineau take its rise somewhere up in the wilderness of Northern Ontario, and flows through a labyrinth of pine forests until its confluence with the broad and picturesque Ottawa at Gatineau Point, a hamlet three or four miles from the “metropolitan village,” where is located the seat of the Dominion Government.
Well, a great many miles up this comparatively unknown stream resided a farmer in comfortable circumstances named Nathaniel Butters or Batters, who was blessed with two daughters and three sons, the eldest of whom, aged twenty years, delighted in the euphonious cognomen of Elva. Elva was a clear-eyed, plump maiden, with a wealth of red hair, but withal fair to the eye, especially to the eye of Samuel Deeger, a young farm laborer who was in the employ of her father. Samuel and Elva fell deeply in love, and when he asked the old man for her hand. The father stoutly and emphatically objected, for various reasons, among them that the young DeGeer was very poor, and that if he consented, the young man had determined to go to Manitoba. Mr. Butters could not think of this and forbid his daughter ever to have anything more to do with DeGeer. To make the mandate more binding he dismissed Samuel from his employ. This only had the effect of making the young folks more persistent in their effort to see each other. Finally, one fine morning the girl’s mother, who however favored Degree’s suit, discovered that Elva had disappeared. And it was subsequently learned that DeGeer was no longer in the neighborhood. The explanation was simple. An elopement had taken place. The old man, from information received as to the course the flying pair had taken, lost no time in pursuing. Jumping into the saddle, he was hard after them. The objective point of the lover was the Q.M.O.A R.R. (spell ?) which passes the front of the Gatineau River, where the pair could be head for Montreal or any other place they chose, and where the service of clergyman would be at (unreadable). All the way down the river the old man got word of them, but they manage to keep well ahead. Although they (unreadable), I live of age.
Unreadable information
Where they took the train to Granville.
Unreadable information
The next place they made to was Montreal where they arrived last Friday. Mr. B. followed on and on and got to Granville, but too late. He also lost no time in reaching this city, arriving on Monday Last.
It will be remembered that on Tuesday last a party of twenty left Bonaventure depot for the Para ire Province and had in not been for the interference of Mr. B. Samuel and his bride would have been off with the party. The old man managed to (unreadable) them in this matter. Learning of their where about in the city through enquires and sear (unreadable) he had his plans will and to make the trip made bitter, waited till the last moment to checking on them. Mr. B. secreted him in the door of the Travel Hotel, (unreadable) where he had put up. As he was aware, they would pass that way about 9 p.m. He had not waited long. In presently an open sleigh from the direction of N. Mince Street and home the death and cozy pressed buffalo. He heard is well known male voice, that of the “arrant” it’s he called Elva. With chain-lightning speed. He was out in the middle of the street and in a voice scrambling distant thunder commanded the John to hit at the (unreadable) the horse by the head. There was perceptible shudder and a look at astonilment notable on the pair of the (unreadable) lovers, especially a regard, the girl. If the street had opened up and swallowed her she could not have been more astonished. After (unreadable) many threat and even blaspheme, the old man began to cool down. It was no use. The whole matter had assumed its worst or perhaps it had simple and he was powerless to interfere, legally or morally. As is always the (unreadable) reconciliation followed. But the trip to Manitoba was abandoned for the time being. All of a sudden Mr. B. becomes as affectionate to his hither to objectionable son in law as an angel. The party of three returned to the hotel, where matters were amiably arranged and the old man showered his blessing on the newly wedded pair. At last account the affair stood about thus: DeGeer and Elva were to return to their home on the Gatineau, wait until May, and then they were at liberty, if nothing better turned up to go to Manitoba and be happy. The party left the city on Wednesday evening and about this time are going over the rugged and snow bound road leading to the forest of pine away up the Gauinean, into the wilderness
Butter Coat of Arms(familiewapen) and variants

The most correct answer is to do your genealogy or very detailed DNA test.

In the 1500's many Dutch and Belgian families were displaced due to Catholic/Protestant religious wars to friendly protestant countries like Germany and England. So Scottish roots is a good possibility.

If you live nead The Hague you will be close to the Central Bureau of Genealogy which has plenty of information on Butter families.

You should also consider variants of the Butter name in your research like Botter, Buter, de Butter.

These may be of interest to you.
De Butter
Materiaal: lak.

Wapenvoerder: De Butter
Alliantiewapen Thuret X De Butter, 1766.
Bron: 1
Bron 1:
Zegels CBG, CB-VE-THO.
Afbeelding: Butter01

Buter
Wapen: eenlage keper vergezeld boven van twee eikels en beneden van vier eikels (1-2-1) allen met de steel omlaag.
Materiaal: lak.
Kleur: rood.
Vorm: ovaal.
Staat: goed.

Wapenvoerder: Buter
Alliantiewapen met N.N.
Bron: 1
Bron 1:
Zegels CBG, CB-I-97.
Afbeelding: Buter01

In there famous Muschart collection is the following

Henry Butter(s) from England

My ancestor, Henry Butter or Butters was born on July 3, 1816 in England. He came to the US and settled in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. He married Susan O'Neal in 1847 in Louisiana. The Rapides Parish Courthouse was burned during the Civil War so Henry's naturalization papers were lost in the fire. He died in 1880 and is buried in the Butters Cemetery in Forest Hill, Rapides Parish, LA. If anyone has any information on a Henry born in England in 1816 and can help with parent's names or where he was from in England, I would really appreciate the help.

Karen:
I am attempting to locate the family of Lorenzo Butter. So far no luck on any sites. Perhaps you can assist. I know he was born between 1794 & 1818 although I suspect it's closer to 1818 than 1794. He served as a Captain in the Maine militia attached to the Land Agent's posse during the days just before the Aroostook War. I have his company roster. Unfortunately, because he was already "in service" on Feb 19th, he & his company are not listed on any of the Aroostook War rosters. Could he be a member of your family from Fryeburg? Thanks
Roberta Williams-1837 Foundation of Northern Maine
nome1837@gwi.net

Ron,
It is possible, particularly if your family origins are in North Holland, Groningen, etc. During the 1600's Scottish ships carried timber logs to The Netherlands to be used as footing piers for new buildings. About 1970 there was a man who worked at the city police office for parking fines, in The Hague. At the time he confirmed the name came from northern Holland and that his family had records of the Scots connection.
Erik
My grandmother was a Butter. I have much information regarding this family. My uncle did a lot of research and I have also had much help from a Butter/Buttar researcher. He is Grant Buttars who lives in Scotland. He would be the best one to contact:
G.Buttars@tesco.net
his website is: http://www.taybank.freeserve.co.uk/

Mary Reed

I don't see a direct connection, but find your maiden name and married name fasinating. My g grandfather is Peter Butter b. 1833 in Germany (Prussia). He died in 1874 in Selma, Alabama. He was married to Sara Mack Sutton b. 1847in Alabama. They had a believed to be "Iona" Sutton living with them in 1870 according to census records. Do you see any connection from your Butter or your husband's Sutton lines.

Butter or Butters is not an uncommon name in southern UK.

Buttars and Butter/s originates from north east Scotland, Dundee and surrounding Shires. Perthshire, Angus, Butter Shire, etc.

The name Butter.Buttar/s or Butyre in its original form appears to have come to north east Scotland from Norway around the 11th century. The German line may have also originated from Scandinavia.

I've come across the Cults Mill Butters/Buttercase family before. They were from the county of Fife, not Aberdeen and are detailed in "The Genealogical Registry
of The Butters Family", By George Butters, Oak Hill, IL - 1896
