Benjamin Butterworth, 1837- 1898

THOMASVILLE, Ga., Jan. 16.—Hon. Benj. Butterworth, United States commissioner of patents, who has been ill at Piney Woods Hotel here for several weeks, died at 3:15 this afternoon. The end was peaceful, and when it came his wife and children were at his bedside. He came here to recuperate from an attack of pneumonia, and recovered rapidly until two weeks ago, when he suffered from uremic convulsions. From that relapse he never recovered. His
body will be sent to Washington tomorrow.

In Washington, no less than in his native state, Major Butterworth enjoyed a wide acquaintance, and the news of his death, while by no means unexpected, will cause general sorrow here. No public man probably had a larger circle of personal friends at the capital. He contracted his fatal illness while on the stump in the late Ohio campaign. No information has been received as to the time or place of the funeral. HIS LIFE'S STORY CINCINNATI, Ohio, Jan. 16—Benjamin Butterworth was what is known as a "birthright Quaker." Those who knew him best during his busy career are unanimous in saying of him, "His daily life was as exemplary of the tenets of the good old faith as that of any public official could be."

He was born in Warren county, Ohio, October 22, 1837; was a member of the state senate from Warren and Butler counties in 1873-74; was elected a representative in congress of the First Ohio district, including the city of Cincinnati, to the 46th 47th, 49th, 50th and 51st congresses. From then until appointed to the position he occupied at his death he devoted most of his time to the practice of law, especially patent law, in this city. "Ben" Butterworth, as he has always been best known, spent his earlier years round about MaineviHe and Foster's Corner—the latter a little station on the Little Miami railroad. His father was William Butterworth, his mother a Linton, a family noted throughout the entire line for their keenness of intellect, powers of perception and strength in speech and debate. Both parents were of Quaker ancestry. Major Butterworth's keen intellect and remarkable powers of perception were inherited from his mother. Butterworth's first acquaintance with law was made in the office of Durbin Ward, then a successful practitioner in Cincinnati. During the war he attained the rank of major in an Ohio regiment. He was a commisisoner of patents first during the administration of Garfield and Arthur, and his record made thertifind subsequently had great weight with President McKlnley in selecting him for that position. He was made secretary of the World's fair project early in the inception of that great enterprise at Chicago, during the early 'UO's, and he worked in that capacity, with honor to himself and profit to the company, until its close.

His widow and four children survive him. His widow was .Miss Mary Schuyler of Pennsylvania. The children are Mrs. How of Washington, D. C, a widow; William, who married a Miss Deere of Moline, 111.; young Ben, who was injured in a college game early in life, and Frank, whose reputation for prowess as a football coach and full-back is almost international.

Los Angeles Herald, Volume 25, Number 109, 17 January 1898

I am looking for information regarding my great grandmother, maiden name Lillian Butterworth. She was born in England around 1891 and came to the US (New York) around 1913. She married my great grandfather, Alejandro (Alexander) Muniz and mothered two sons to him, Alexander in 1915 and George in 1918. I lose track of her at age 29 on the 1920 census when she was still living with my great grandfather and the boys in Manhattan. Sometime after this she left her husband and children behind for unknown reasons. I'm told she tried to come home later but was told she was no longer welcome since she'd left once. George, my grandfather, knew very little about her.

My great grandfather, who lived and was married in London, Ontario, was Christopher Butterworth who had one son, Henry Benjamin Butterworth, who also had one son, my father, Benjamin Russel Butterworth.

If you like, I will try to find out more.

Judith

I have attached a copy of a page out of a local booked called "Eldon Connections" by Rae Fleming. John Butterworth would have been my great grandfather. His son Charles Butterworth was my grandfather. I actually drove to Duck Lake, Victoria Road today to see if I could see the old homestead. Apparently there was an old iron gate that had "Butterworth" on it. Unfortunately, what we found today, is that the old homestead is gone and is being made into retirement homes. Duck Lake is now being called "Victoria Road Lake"

I visited a cemetry near Woodville and we found one tombstone.

Let me know if you need more information and I will see what I can find.

Hi Hayden,

Thanks very much for your email.

I believe that the Hannah BUTTERWORTH (my 1st cousin 7 x removed) who married Thomas OSWIN was the daughter of Henry BUTTERWORTH & Alice COWPER. My source for this is the “Draft Third Codicil for PA/101/8/744 PA/101/8/755 - Will of Henry BUTTERWORTH”. I very much appreciate that it is extremely difficult sorting out who fits in where in this period of time but I do feel I am correct but I am more than happy to be proved wrong as this only makes my Tree more accurate.

If you would like to email me ianFH at westnet.com.au (please change the word “at” to @ and remove the spaces) I would be happy to supply more information on this Line.

Look forward to talking to you later.

Best regards,

Ian B.

From: butterworth-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:butterworth-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com
Sent: Sunday, 5 December 2010 9:44 AM
To: BUTTERWORTH-L@rootsweb.com
Subject: Re: [BTTRWTH] BUTTERWORTH Descendants of Belfield & Butterworth Hall

This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.

Author: HaydenOswin
Surnames: Oswin Butterworth
Classification: queries

Message Board URL:

http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.butterworth/415.2/mb.ash...

Message Board Post:

Hi.
Hi Hayden,

I couldn't help noticing your name, and wonder if we used to know each other? I don't want to put too much here in a public forum, but if my name isn't familiar to you do the names Oswin Griffiths and Equal Data Systems mean anything to you? I'd love to hear from you directly - please feel free to email me at wendy.howard@gmail.com

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard
--
Kaiwaka, Northland, New Zealand
http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/

Hi

My great grandmother (asenath b1891) was a butterworth and i have been trying to research the family. Most of her line going back came from Nortants and manchester, until my great grandmother moved to swindon wiltshire.
I know that asenath's uncle Samuel (b1867) moved to australia, and lived in victoria as I have recently found a living descendant. however i also know that asenath's brother william (b1857) moved to australia later in life for health reasons. All anyone can tell me is he was told to move to australia or his bad health would kill him. he moved and apparently lived many years. i dont know about any family he may have had out there? Williams parents were john butterworth and hannah clow. does anyone recognise any of these names?
Hi Emma,
I've received all of your reply's. How wonderful to hear from you!! As you can see,I've been researching our family for 10 + years and was beginning to think I was the only one interested!

My great grandfather,Arthur Cornelius Boulton (1870-1905),son of Joseph Charles and Mary Ann Nield Boulton, was an older brother to your Edward Cornelius.
Arthur married Emily B. Harling in 1893 Rochdale.They had 6 known children - Arthur Jr.(1893-1978), Mary (1895-1963),Joseph Charles (1897-1898),Agnes (1899-1987)-my grandmother,Joseph (1901-1987) and Jeanette (1904-1964).
After Arthur Cornelius died in 1905 Blackburn,my great grandmother,Emily Harling Boulton took up with John William Greenwood (1885-1940) and came to New Jersey. They had 4 children.

This is what little I've found about Edward Cornelius and family. I'd be interested to know more.
Edward Cornelius Boulton, born 1883 Chester,Ches. married 1909 Rochdale to Sarah Elizabeth (Bessie) Uttley, born about 1887. Do you know when they died or where buried? According to the 1911 Rochdale census,Edward,Bessie and son,Irvin (b.1909 ?), were living in a tenement at Hudson Farm. Edward was listed as a hairdresser.
Did Edward and Bessie have other children? Any further help would be most appreciated.

I have further information about the earlier branches of the Boulton's,Nield's and related families. If I can be of help to you, please let me know,as I'll share what I have.
This is so exciting to finally be in contact with a Boulton relative!! Hope to hear from you soon.
Best wishes,
Nancy

Re: Butterworth Inquiry

Just to clear up the mention of Butterworth Hall back in the time of Reginald de BOTERWORTH (or whatever spelling you may find him under).

History of Rochdale - Fishwick
By Henry FISHWICK shows: -
The old halls and houses in Rochdale are mostly of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In the former period the use of timber for the external walls was fast falling into disuse, and the half-timbered houses arose, which again gave place to buildings of brick or stone. Internally the greater houses consisted of a large hall for common use (or in later instances a small hall and a parlour for the family and a kitchen for the domestics), with a wide staircase with carved oak balustrades entering therefrom. The old brazier and reredos had been succeeded by the wide open fireplace and the ingle nook, whilst the walls in many instances were wainscotted and the roofs ornamented with massive oak beams.

You can read this book at http://www.link4life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=c.showPage&amp...

At this stage of my research in to the BUTTERWORTH Line I would also question the information in Burke's Landed Gentry, 1939 and 1952. As we all know it is extremely difficult researching back this far in time but if one looks at the period of time between different people I believe it also brings into question the accuracy of the Burke's Landed Gentry, 1939 and 1952.

I hope this may be of assistance and say some confusion on the early BUTTERWORTH Line.

If anyone is currently researching the early BUTTERWORTH Line and would like to compare notes on this I would love to hear from you.

Best regards,

Ian Butterworth.

Yes, Ian, that is my John & Ann Dania Butterworth married in 1817. The name Daney has been used before. I have a photo of Ann's father's gravestone in MA. The carving lists him as "Samuel Daney", died 30 Aug 1841.

They had at least eight children that I know of: Benjamin who married Anna Maria Hoppin, William who married Mary ?, James, Sarah, Maria, John, Joseph & Samuel Dana Butterworth who married Anne Jane Cassidy.

Samuel is the only one I know more about. He had three children: Samuel D., Alice M., & Blanche E. He & his family were the ones that moved from MA & moved to Racine, WI, my hometown.

I wish I knew where all the children were born. The oldest kids were definitely born in Lancashire. The Lancashire Online Parish Records show some of their baptisms.

Thanks for your reply.
Nancy

Hi Nancy,

Could this be the marriage of John BUTTERWORTH & Ann DANIA?

Marriage: 16 Nov 1817 St Chad, Rochdale, Lancashire, England
John Butterworth - (X), of this parish
Ann Deany - (X), of this parish
Witness: D.
Hello William,

Hopefully you get this message. I am not sure if you are still looking for the passenger list for your mother Winnifred, but it is available on the Canadian Government Archives. My GG Grandfather, Samuel Butterworth, also travelled on the Montrose from Liverpool, so your post caught my attention as I was browsing the threads. I have saved the list for you, and will email it to you if you wish me to. As well, I can send you a copy of the SS Montrose postcard I have from when Samuel sailed to Canada. My email is rgbutterworth@hotmail.com.

Robert Butterworth

i am helen b 1791's g g g g grandson.

i have most of the history of everyone in my family back to 1750 except john butterworth, as no butterworths in angus in scotland it would seem prior to his arrival. the lanarkshire lot definitely seem to have come from rochdale, and possible they are linked to angus but again all conjecture. cannot find the missing link.
i have asked the same questions and put in many hours. clearly the likelihood is the rochdale link, as the names of butterworths there have many of the same christian names.
my gut feel is they are not from yorkshire as names not quite in symmetry.

Hi Sarah,

I hope you do not mind if I give you some advice.

You asked about Alfred & Martha BUTTERWORTH but for people to be able to help you need to give more information.

You make no mention of were or when your grandparents were born, married or died (you do say your grandfather died 1935). Was it in the UK, USA or some other country?

In my opinion would better if you say something like: -
My grandfather Alfred BUTTERWORTH was born in 1900, Rochdale, Lancashire, England. He married Martha SMITH in 1927. Martha was born 1905 in Bury, Lancashire, England. They had an only daughter Betty BUTTERWORTH born 1927 in Rochdale, Lancashire, England and both of my grandparents had died by the time my mum was 7.

As your grandparents have died it would not be a problem to post these details (if they were living then that is a different matter altogether).

Can I suggest that you post again giving as much information as you can?

I hope that this is a help to you.

Good luck with it.

Best Regards,

Ian Butterworth.
