Hiram and Mary Dickason are part of my family tree. I actually live on the farm they owned and raised their family on in Switzerland County, Indiana. Hiram died of a fever at the age of 40. Mary lived many years after his death. She raised all of her children here on the farm and her daughter Olive married Lewis P. Bradford and came to live with Mary and continued the farming. Hiram and Mary were actually married in 1844 from the records I have found. I do have a photo of Mary and all of her children if you are interested. Sorry no photo of Hiram. They are both burried at the Jacksonville Cemetery near Center Square, IN. Hiram's parents Lathan and Olive Buttles are also burried there. Olive and Lewis P. Bradford are also burried in the same cemetery.

I am interested in any information that could be supplied on Hiram Buttles who was born in approximately 1816 in New York.

Ruth Helen Buttles, born 1923, in Burlington, Vt. to Ernest & Sarah

She had a baby in Virginia in 1949, my wife. I have the adoption papers where she gave her up (lists herself as 26 with no means of support an from Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Census records from 1930 put her at 7 in Burlington, Vt.

If you can add any info to this, we would be grateful. One note on another family tree said the mother, Ruth, died young, and was buried in Chicago, Ill. // She had 4 siblings up to 8 years older (back to 1915) and two listed 2 years and a half year old (that would make the r older range from 90 on down, and the younger ones 78 and 76 today if living).

Any help on connecting with the family would be great.

Henry BUTTLES married my gggg aunt, Hannah COOPER, in January of 1850 in Lucas County, Ohio. They were listed in the 1850 census in the Washington Township, Wood County, Ohio. After that, I can't find them. I am wondering if they died between 1850-1860. Henry's parents were Edmond and Priscilla (TEIGLE) BUTTLES, and Hannah's parents were James and Sarah (RICE) COOPER.
Mark M. BUTTLES Biography, b. 1844 NY to WI to MT to NE to CA to WI

From "History of La Crosse County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 743.

City of La Crosse

MARK M. BUTTLES, Sheriff of La Crosse County, is a native of Chautauqua Co., N. Y., where he was born on the last day of April, 1844. The following year, his parents, flowing with the tide of emigration to the West, came to Wisconsin and settled in Walworth County, the present Sheriff being included in their list of household valuables. After a temporary sojourn at this point, they continued their pilgrimage to Rock County, and halting at Janesville, remained in that present flourishing city until 1854, when they come to La Crosse County and became permanent settlers of Burnham Valley, in the present Township of Burns. Here Mr. Buttles passed the earlier years of his life, attending school and availing himself of such advantages as the limited educational resources of the place afforded, until the breaking-out of the war. In 1861, he enlisted in Company A, First Wisconsin Cavalry, in which he served two years, when he was disabled and discharged, and returned home. In 1864, he concluded to try his fortunes further west, and crossing the plains, became a miner in Montana. A year's experience persuaded Mr. Buttles to return to the homes of civilization, and he descended the Missouri River to Omaha in a Mackinac boat, and entered the service of the Union Pacific Railroad Company. In 1867, he visited Fort Sully, thence to La Crosse on a visit. During the spring of 1868, he re-visited Omaha, and proceeded to California, where he became a ranchero, and followed that exciting and varied pursuit until 1873, with no inconsiderable success, when he disposed of his interests and once more journeyed to La Crosse County. He settled in West Salem, where he engaged in trading and speculating, and where he was married to Miss Anna Pierce. In 1879, he was elected to his present position and remove to the city of La Crosse. As a public officer he has given the fullest satisfaction to an admiring constituency. Socially, he is a courteous gentleman, and is a man, one whom misfortune can never dishearten or disaster appall.

[I am not related to this family and have no further information.
Joseph Buttles-CT to OH

Joseph Buttles has been making me nuts for years! He was born in 1797 in CT-presumably Granby or nearby. Sometime between then and 1825 he moved to Trumbull County, Ohio. I don't know if he came with parents, or moved when he was older. However, he was married in Johnston, Trumbull County, OH in 1825. In 1826 on his marriage certificate his place of residence was listed as Mecca, Trumbull County, OH. These other names also appeared in Trumbull County records during that time frame: Friend Buttles who resided in Mecca also, and Benoni Buttles who lived in Brookfield, Trumbull County, OH. It could be possible that they were all brothers, cousins, etc.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!

It is indeed the same Joseph Buttles/Buttolph. From the 1850 census, I ascertained that his place of birth was Connecticut. Of course, at the time of his birth, Connecticut covered a major part of the upper third of present day Ohio (see information on the Western Reserve at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~maggieoh/western.html for info on that). His wife's name was Sally Sutton, and they were married in Trumbull County, Ohio. I do not have an exact death date for him either. Neither do I have a burial location. I too would presume that he died between the 1870 census and the 1880 one, as I did not find him on 1880 either.

We may be looking at the same Joseph Buttles. I found him in Warren Co IL on the 1850 census. His daughter Lucy Ann married Samuel Smith (the line I am following). According to the 1850 census his wife's name was Sarah and she was born in OH. On the 1860 census, Samuel, Lucy and Lewis Smith (1) are living with Joseph. Joseph was living with Samuel and Lucy on the 1870 census, still in IL. By 1880 the Smith's were in OR, so I am assuming Joseph died sometime in the 1870s. I would be greatly interested to have whatever information you have about his birth place and his marriage record.

I'm trying to find any ancestors to Harry Buttles who was born Aug 1858 in Ohio. He married Amelia A. Folker (b. Aug 1857 in Iowa) and had the following children in Missouri:

Charlie H. Buttles b. Sep 17, 1884
Lucian V. Buttles b. Dec 7, 1886
Albert R. Buttles b. Aug 10, 1888
Harry D. Buttles b. Sep 1890
George H. Buttles b. Feb. 6, 1895

The entire family moved to California shortly after 1900.

The family says there was a name change from Buttolph at some point but I don't know how many generations back this occurred.

1900 Census records for Missouri show that Harry's mother and father were both born in Ohio.

I'm also interested in any info on Amelia A. Folker. and her ancestors. According to the same 1900 census records she was born in Iowa.
Desire Buttles m. Hiram Cadwell - CT to OH

Seeking ancestors for both. Have also seen Desire listed as Della, Dethia, Desiah and Deziah. From OH census records I have gleaned that Desire was born about 1803 and Hiram was born about 1793. They were married in Granby, CT on December 27, 1821 (listed there as Desire). They had at least 9 children, most in CT. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Levi Buttles

I do not show a Barbara Buttles. I do, however show a Levi Buttles, s/o Sgt. Joel Buttolph and Hannah Phelps, married to a Maria Brown in 1823. (Note: Many Buttolph descendants used the name of Buttles.) Could this be the same Levi and Mariah? Do you have any more information on this couple?Descendants? Please contact me.
Ct. to Ohio Buttles

I am also searching for Buttles in Ohio. Bbarbara Buttles was born Mar 28, 1770 , we aren't sure where. She married Malcomb McFall sometime about 1795, probably in Pa. They moved to Coitsville, Ohio - near present day Youngstown. Is this the same area? There was a Levi and Mariah Buttles in the area and some have assumed that they were her parents. I haven't been able to confirm this.
