James Edward (or Edward James)

I am looking for any information on James Edward or Edward James Button. Born Brighton, Sussex 1854.He was a library porter in Brighton in the 1871 census, then disappears entirely - until the 1901 census. Then listed as a boarder with brother William Henry in Dartford, Kent before disappearing again.

In the meanwhile - William Henry went to Australia in 1891 with wife Harriet, then returned 1899 after she died in Melbourne. In 1901 he was living with Frances Wilson and her three children (she was already married).

Another two brothers also went to Australia: Albert (b1855) went first to Melbourne, then settled in Perth, and had a large family. Arthur (b1858) went to Queensland with wife and two children, but divorced in 1903 (I haven't yet been able to trace what happened either to Arthur or his son Arthur and daughter Agnes). There was an Edward James Button of about the right age who died in a gun accident in Queensland in January 1889 but since ours turned up alive and well in England in 1901 this must just be coincidence. Indeed I have no evidence that James / Edward ever went to Australia.

This is a message to irishspirit20, or anyone else who has information,

I am a descendant of William Button, brother of Mathias Button. I have been to the church, St. Peters, in Harrold, Bedfordshire, England where William is buried.

William's descendant is Albert Augustus Button, son of another Wiliam Button. Albert is my Grandfather. I am looking for any more information about William Button of Harrold, England. I know he was baptised and buried in the St. Peter's church of Harrold. William died in 1637, I believe. His family seems to have moved from Harrold, as there is no other record of William's family. His brother Mathias came to the US in the early 1600s.

Any information is welcome.....evmdb44

Elias Button, died Barren Co., KY

I am looking for a proof document that names Mary Ann as the child of Elias Button and Nancy Settle, his wife. I found the inventory of Nancy's estate that gives Jordan Morris as owing a debt to the estate - this is in 1851 when they are settling Nancy's estate. Does any researcher of the descendants of Harman Button have any documents that name Mary Ann as a child of Elias? Also, does anyone have a copy of the will of Harman from Culpeper County?

Does anyone have a copy of marriage license for Mary Ann Button and Jordan A. Morris?

Thanks

Looks like I posted that reply to the wrong place. I'll try again here....

Hi...

Thanks for the prompt reply! I’m not sure that I do hook up to your Horace Greely Button line, but I thought that my Harvey Button might be related to him by some way seeing as in an earlier line that you posted (see post below), Horace’s grandfather, John born 1806 was in the same general area at the same general time frame....Onondaga, NY. You also mention that John’s father, Albert was born abt 1780 also in Onondaga, NY. My William M Button was also located in Onondaga, NY around 1823.

As stated on the forum, I’m stuck on Harvey Button and Elena Shafer. There’s one lady that had William M Button (b 1819) hooked up to William Pollard Button (b 1806) and Jersua Pelton (b 1808), but she was way off with this. First problem with that is that William Pollard Button and Jersua Pelton married in 1827....much after 1819 when my William M Button was born. The book, Button Families of America lists the son of William Pollard Button and Jersua Pelton , William M Button as being born around 1829 ..... 10 years later than my William M Button (b abt 1819). I highly doubt that an 11 year old Jersua had a son.

I have proof that my William M Button’s parents were Harvey Button and Elena Shafer through census records and a death record of William M Button’s sister, Harriett Button French. I can send the info if you are interested. Here’s my Button tree on WorldConnect:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

The one thing that is posted there at this link above that I’m not certain about is where William M Button was born. All that I’m fairly sure about is that he was born in MA abt 1819. His sister, Harriett was born in NY 1823. So I assume that the family may have moved from MA to NY between 1819 and 1823. They were located in Onondaga, NY probably after 1823 and up until at least the 1860 census for that area.

Thanks for any input or ideas!

You can also go to RootsWeb and put in Button as the surname and Shafer and the spouse and see a link to William M. It has lots of information Harriett and if you follow the Miner link, you will see they also have living descendants posted.

Again, I an very interested in knowing how Horace connects because Miner and other names pop up in my line.
Hello Steve, by chance are you still out there? I'm looking for Harvey Button that married Elena Shafer possibly somewhere in MA and had at least one son by the name of William M Button (born abt 1819 in MA) according to census records. William M Button appears on the 1850 & 1860 census for Manlius, Onondaga Co., NY. He then appears in Clinton Twp., Macomb Co., MI for the 1870 census. Harvey and Elena Button had one known daughter by the name of Harriett Button (b Sep 9 1823 in NY) and married James French about 1840 in prob NY. Elena lived with both children at different years according to census records and Harriett French's death record lists her parents as Harvey Button and Elena Shafer. I have not been able to find anything further on Harvey Button. Thank you for any help that you might be able to offer.

Does any Button researcher have a document that proves that Mary Ann Button, wife of Jordan A. (Ambrose?) Morris, is the daughter Nancy Settle and Elias Button? A family Bible record, land record, probate record, etc. is needed to prove this lineage. Any help would be appreciated. I have seen some books with this connection, but no source document is cited to verify the relationship.

Nancy Settle Button's estate inventory is available, but I do not find any tie to Mary Ann. There were minor children when Elias died. Were there guardianships for the children?

Diana

I have the death certificate of Isaac Newton Morris that names parents Jordan Morris and Mary Ann Button.

This will not help you very much but I believe your Button line is some how related to either Gilbert Button b 1778 in CT or Avery Button b abt 1785 in CT. These two Button lines intermarried and their genealogy is often in error. Sarah, Almira and Mercy names were common in their descendants.

I believe my line also descends from one of these lines and would be very interested if you ever find out who their father was.
I don't have an active subscription to ancestry.com at the moment, so I can't send a message through that. I've done very extensive research on the Button family which I would love to share with you. I'll explain more through email.

Hello from the Canadian side of the Buttons (direct line from Mattias.) Not sure if this is correct (from a geneology done a almost 30 years ago - or more). Stated that Thomas Button born on Harold England 1575, died 1617 and buriedin Harold Churchyard. Decended from Thomas Button, bishop of Exeter 1293.

My line is Matthias
Peter 1660 - 1726 (Matthias & Teegle)
Peter 1688
Joseph 1720
John 1772 - 1861 (arrived Upper Canada 1798 - founder of Buttonville, Ontario)
Francis - 1794 - 1880 (only son but had daughters)
Newbury - 1825-1910 (3rd son of Francis
John (married Alberta Jones, sister of Sir Lymond Jones)
2 sons Ernest (1876 - 1976 & Fredrick Lorne (1878 - 1956)
Ernie - Daughter Janet, Son John (still living)
Fred - son Reg 1909 - 1998)
Reg - son Eric 1945 & daughter Judith 1951

I can give you more details of the Canadian side if interested. I have a picture of my dad as a baby in Newberry's arms (seated) with John & Fred behind. Newberry died in 1910.

Please e-mail if you want more details. I would be interested in more information about the American side of the Button family. And if anyone knows any history further back in England.
thank you\
Judith Glover nee Button
jandjglover@gmail.com

If you send me your email address, I will put you in touch with the person that has a very large data base on this Button line going back to the 1500's

For what it is worth, this Button line is NOT related to Matthias Button b 1607. Even though many people have traced a common ancestor back to both lines, DNA proved they are not related at all.

I have posted some information below. I have this line going to John Button b 1963 but will not post it online.

12 John Young Button b: 21 May 1861 d: 03 Dec 1935 in Culpeper Co.,
Virginia
................................................................... +Maude Agnes Duncan b: 21 Sep 1870 d: 13 Feb 1939 in Culpeper Co.,Virginia m: Oct 1896
.................................................................. 13 Duncan Young Button b: 01 Aug 1897 d: 27 Jul 1899
.................................................................. 13 Robert Young Button b: 02 Nov 1899 in Culpeper Co., Virginia

Steve Button
sbutton@aol.com
I am the Project Administrator of the Button DNA project and would like to communicate with you as to this Button line. I will be glad to send you what the Button Families of America book says about this line, which is not too much.

We have several Buttons DNA tested that say they are distantly related to Matthias Button b 1607 and I believe they may be related to your John Button. I would very much like to be put in touch with a male Button in this line to prove that your John Button was related to Matthias Button and perhaps help several Buttons prove John was their Button ancestor.

You may contact me at sbutton@aol.co.

Steve Button
NYE is the Auther and the book was published in 1971. I have been told that it will NOT be revised so I am going to borrow it as long as I can and copy whatever info I can. If you need a look up, let me know! :)

Edward & Rachel (nee McKenzie) Scotland to Brooklyn

Looking for anyone researching the family of Edward Button b. 1872 in Ramsgate, Kent, England, son of Silvanis Button and Esther Sparks.

In 1899 in Argyll, Scotland, he married Rachel McKenzie b.1875 in Raasay, Inverness, Scotand daughter of Neil McKenzie and Euphemia McLeod.

Issue:
i) Edward Neil Button b. 1901 in Sittingbourne, Kent, England
ii) Catherine Euphemia Button b. 1903 Glasgow, Scotland
iii) Rose May Button b. 1905 Glasgow, Scotland
iv) Sylvester Mary Button b. 1907 Glasgow, Scotland
v) William John Button b. 1911 Glasgow, Scotland

It seems that Edward Button was living in Scotland before he got married in 1899 and then they moved back to Kent, England where their first son Edward was born. Then back to Glasgow, Scotland where their second child was born. In 1928 the whole family moved to Brooklyn, New York. I don't know what happened to any one other then the youngest son William John Button. He was married twice, first to Catherine and second to Alice. He died in 1965 in Los Angeles, and is buried in The Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.
