My name is Greg Buxton. My father is Kenneth Buxton Jr., and my grandfather is Kenneth Buxton Sr. We are all from the central-northern Alabama area. I know we have Creek indian in our lineage. There was a creek tribe in northern Alabama/Georgia/Tennessee area along with the Cherokee. They were all ran out on "The Trail of Tears". If you have any ancestors from that area, it is very likely that you have Cherokee in your background (or maybe creek as well), since they were both from the same area and friendly tribes with each other. It's hard to prove it though, as I have found out. Indians did not keep birth certificates, and marriage records from back then were usually only kept by the family. My great grand mother was full blooded Creek, and I can't find any written records of it, but my parents and grandparents have confirmed the fact.

I really know nothing more about Jonathan Tarver. The Buxton farm was in Clarke County in the 1850's. The Buxton sons, Martin and Daniel own farms in Choctaw County in 1860 but in 1870, they are back in Clarke County. Possibly there were boundary line changes during this time or possibly they moved back and forth. I do not know.

Jonathan Tarver worked on a farm owned by Martin Charles Buxton and his wife Catherine Dash Buxton. Martin Charles died in 1846 and a few months later Jonathan Tarver married Catherine, the widow. She had 2 sons and possibly a daughter from Martin Charles Buxton. Catherine passed away sometime after 1850 and her 2 sons stayed on in Choctaw County. Jonathan Tarver did not have custody of Catherine's children after her death.

He came from England in 1636-37 according to The Book of Emmigrants 1607-1660 published by Genealogical Publishing Co. in 1988 in Baltimore, MD. Did he marry Elizabeth Poole who also came over on the same ship with two friends and 13 servants? Do you know if Anthony Buxton had brothers coming over from England on different ships whose names were James, John(JON), Francis and Thomas?

Hello Caylie,
Yes there are still Buxtons around. Those around Maitland are no longer Buxton I'm afraid as I believe the only son that Francis had died when he was about two years old. The ones that I know are descendants of Sarah Ann Buxton and Arthur Redhouse. I do know that some of the descendents of Thomas Buxton's earlier marriage are still in New South Wales as I have contacted them. After Christmas I will contact you again and write down what I know for you. I have quite a lot of photos which I took when I was in Maitland 20 years ago. There will be a page on the Buxtons in Australia on the internet in a few weeks time. The lady who is doing it will let me know as soon as she has finished it, of course the delay is caused by Chritsmas.

Wishing you a Happy Christmas,

Jean.

Dear all,

Family legend has it that one of my relatves (Jonathan Buxton) owned the Grove Inn, Macclesfield. I have direct info of his son Samuel Buxton being born in Staffordshire in about 1857 but the only info we have on his father is family hearsay and a glass plate photograph of the Grove Inn on Chestergate in Macclesfield and an old inscribed pocket watch - it's conceivable Jonathan may be an older brother of Sam. Does anyone know anyone ancesters that might link with this info?

I am trying to find parents of Mary Ann Buxton b: 1860 married to John Henry Monroe. I think they started out in Ohio and ended up in Montgomery Cnty, IN. Daughter Bessie May Monroe was born 1880. She married Albert Chesterson. Could my Mary Ann be daughter of one of Greenbury's sons? Thanks

Dear Tim,

I am a descendent of Samuel Buxton who was born at Heaton, Staffs. in Dec 1856. He was the son of Samuel Buxton, born 1820 at Leekfrith, Staffs. and his wife Emma, formerly Hall. Samuel(1820)and Emma were the inn-keepers of The Grove Hotel, Chestergate, Macclesfield. I have done quite a lot of research on the family. I too heard of "Jonathan Buxton", probably from the same source as you, but have concluded he is a "red herring"!

Regards, Diana
