Small world I guess!

Feel free to send me a message back!

Re: Buycks of Alabama

Linda...the African American Buycks are no doubt directly connected to Edward Leo Buyck who was a prominent planter who settled Buyckville, Alabama between Wetumpka and Rockford in Elmore and Coosa Counties. He was a native of Orangeburg District, South Carolina, of Flemish ancestry, and came to Alabama in the early 1830's. His grandfather, Peter, was a banker and helped finance the warship South Carolina for the American Revolution. His sister was married to a Spiegner, also from Orangeburg District and they came to Alabama in the same wagon train and bought farms near each other. He most likely owned a dozen or two slaves based on his net worth and died at an advanced age during the War Between the States of smoke inhalation while helping fight a fire in a slave cabin. It is very likely that the s was added to the Afro-American Buyck name when the war ended and the great majority of former slaves took the name of the family to whom they were attached. Buyckville still stands today but there are few buildings left. I greatly appreciate your interest in your family and I hope this helps. There are still some records in the Coosa County Courthouse. The Buyck family still exists and the name has been retained in South Carolina. The name has died out in Alabama but hundreds of direct descendants remain.

Hi I have been researching my grandfathers side of the family. They are the Bradfords from Wetumpka, Alabama. I came across Adeline Buyck and James Buyck in my family tree. I believe if i calculated it right, that James Buyck is a great great great great grandpa of mine on one of my grandmothers side. I have info saved to my family tree. I was so happy to come across this. I know James Buyck's father was born in Africa. That is all I have come across thus far. Please contact me, we are just wanting to know our family members.

Hello, my name is Blanche "Nicole" Ayers. If I am responding to the right the right person, then Willie Buycks is my Great-Grandfather, from Tatums Oklahoma. He married Cindy Williams, and they gave birth to their only daughter, Blanche who died in her early twenties (they also had 4 sons). Blanche gave birth to two kids, 1 being my father Gary Paul Ayers, who died when he was 30 or 31? Is there a family tree available that my siblings and I would be able to look at, to know who is who, because after out fathers death we were scattered out to different family members in different states and we don't know who ALOT of our family, some of use have already dated one or 2 of them, until it was later said "you guys are family"!

Yes, I believe we are related. Mathew Buyck(s) and Scott Buyck(s) were our g-grandfather. Willie Buycks and Curtis Buyck(s)es were cousin, our grandfathers. Louis Buycks and my father Ruben Buyckes were second cousin. So that makes use third cousin from Mathew and Scott Buyck(s).

Frank and Josie move to LA for a while. Frank and Josie have eight children from the 1900 cenus. (Sussie, Annie, John Colfax, Sallie, Ernest, Ida, and baby). Frank, Sr. was in prison in LA, that where I believe my grandfather Scott Buyck(s) married her from. My great grandfather first wife was Lizzie Ziegler. Before arriving to South Carolina he came from Niageria. I beleive if the european Buycks would release there slave records that it would make our search much easier.

William:

Haven't visited this board in a long time; catching up on items that have recently been posted.

I'm a Buyck descendant, via my grandfather (Harvey Hollinquest), whose mother was Lelia Buyck. Both of these familys, Buyck and Hollinquest, once resided in Wetumpka. Lelia came from a large family, several of whom married into the Hollinquest family.

We have several family members in various parts of CA. I can share that information with you as well.

I'll check my notes for the names you've listed (I'm writing from work).

On another note, our family reunion is scheduled for the weekend of June 20 in Bossier City, LA. At our last reunion in 2001, we were pleased to meet, for the first time, another Buyck descendant, Angelia. Please share this info with your immediate family; we're hopeful that you will be able to attend.

It looks as though we have a common bond so please stay in touch (lfwatkins@ev1.net). I'd love to exchange family notes.

Linda

Hello again
In the 1900 census, Frank and Josie had said they had been married for 14 years which would have been around 1886. Annie was born in 1881. Josie states that 8 of 8 children are living which means Annie is probably hers. Do you have a maiden name for Josie or clues to maiden name? I'm wondering if she was a Buycks before her marriage to Frank, or, if Annie adopted he name of a step-father.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Also, stories handed down in the family have said that Annies mother was a Geechie. Have you heard of any Geechie connections?

Thanks
Joan

We are getting close to something.
Annie Mae Buyckes grandson, Thell Butler who now lives in NC and is quite old, said that Annies father was Frank McCain from Wetumpka, Elmore County Alabama. He thought the wifes maiden name was Nelson and maybe the first name was either Mariah or Ida. Annie Mae was born between 1880 and 1891.

I did find a Frank McCain livin in Montgomery County Alabama, in the 1920 Census.
Enumeration district 113
Sheet 9A

Dwelling Number 160, Family number 177

McCain, Frank, head, owner, male, Black, age 49 at last birthday, married, born AL Father born AL, Farming
Ida (might be Ilu, hard to read, wife, female, Black, age 39, Born AL, Father and mother b. AL
Louise, dau, 12
Can't read the next child, looks like Pare, son, no age listed, b. AL
Alberta, dau, 6
Ilu Bess (might be Ida Bess) dau. 4
Mamie, dau, 1

Next house
B_ _ _ _ ( can't read it), Paul, head
McCain, Mar, mother-in-law, 83, b. AL Father and Mother born in AL

The above Frank McCain is too young to be Annie Mae's father. Maybe it's a brother.
The mother-in-law living next door would fit with "Mariah" leading me to believe the Frank listed might be a Jr.

Thell Butler also said an Alberta Jones was an aunt of his but he didn't know how she fit into the family other than being from Annie Maes family.

I'm not a home, but when I return, I'll check my photocopy of the census page to see if there is anything else significant, or if I can take a better stab at reading Paul Bs last name.

Thanks for the info...... it's exciting
Joan
