Bye Family/Norway/USA from Kaare Bye *

Classification: Biography
Surnames: Bye, Unseth, Johnson, Brynhildsen, Brynildsen, Brynildson
I am a granddaughter of Alice Christina Bye and Joseph Bernhard Unseth. Alice was the daughter (born Dec. 30, 1878, in Lenora, Minn.) of Svend Bernhard Brynhildsen/Brynildsen/son and Petra Johnson. They were married in 1872 in Minn. The name Brynildsen was changed to Bye when they came to America. Alice had a brother, Adolph Edwin, (born April 13, 1881) who survived. They also had two brothers who died in infancy. They moved from Minn. to Wisconsin in 1884 when Alice was 5. You can see from this that the name Bye was taken in America. I have followed the Brynildsen/son line in Norway back to early 1600s and there does not appear to be a connection with Bye anywhere.

However, the family I am discussing lived in America as Bye. Petra had 2 brothers in Norway, John and Andrew Johnson, and their mother, Mrs. Johnson who was born April 28, about 1805. Petra was born May 1, 1841, in Toten, Norway. She and her mother (and probably her two brothers) emigrated in 1870 and eventually came to Minneapolis (we believe Svend or maybe both Svend and Petra were on a ship to Canada.) Petra's mother, Mrs. Johnson, died April 30, 1898, at age 93, in America, having been bedridden for 3 years.

Svend was a shoemaker at Menomonie, WI, and also was a janitor and caretaker at the grade school at N. Menomonie for 30 years. Svend and Petra also raised girl, Thea _____. Since daughter Alice had died in 1923, in Iowa, Thea was a daughter to Petra and saw to her comfort both at home and later in nursing homes.

Alice and Joseph had 7 children, the youngest dying at about age 17 months of pneumonia. They were married in 1901 in Menomonie, Wisconsin, and moved because Joseph was a Lutheran pastor in North Dakota, then in Iowa, then another place in Iowa, then in Minn., serving even after his retirement in nursing homes.

Since this information does not indicate a relationship with the Bye bloodline, I do not know if you are interested. However, they lived as Byes in America and that name has been passed down through Adolph Edwin Bye's descendants.

Kaare, since you are looking for a Bye who is probably still living, it is harder to find living relatives than after a person is deceased. Also there are two Dakota states: North Dakota and South Dakota.

Please let me know when you get this information.
