Looking for any information on Sixtus Michael Byer (1868-?), oldest son of Johann Jasper Byer. He was born in Mercer County, Ohio and married Mary Jane Dutro. The last information I have on him puts him around Marion, Indiana, in 1940. I have a 93-year-old great-aunt who wants to know if I have found Uncle Six yet.

All that I have been able to discover since my original posting is that Nancy Garrett(Garrot)was married to George William Byer on 20 Nov 1804 in Rockingham County VA. Her Father was Thomas and I have two brothers, Moseley and Samuel, for her. At this point I do not see a connection.
Tom

Hi - Could Nancy be related to Lewis Wyatt Garrett 1807-1865) of Bowling Green, Virginia? I have Lewis' parents as Robert Garett (b1775 in York, Virginia) and mother as Martha Wyatt (b. 1768) but no other siblings of Lewis. Just curious as a possible connection :)
Kathi

Re: Robert Byer Israel/Abraham

I have now detangled the family...FINALLY! It took a while, but a Byer eventually found our postings and we have pieced it together with the help of Ray Byer (Myer's brother Benjamin's son- now 88). Abraham Bajewski (Byer) and Rosa had 7 children. Their names were Samuel, Harry, Celie (Celia), Israel, Myer Isaac, Benjamin and Rubin (Robert). It is pure coincidence that Myers wife was Celia and he had a sister by that name, too. Myer and Harry changed Bajewski to Bayefsky to Bafsky. The rest of them, Abraham included, changed the name to Byer, although Albraham and Israel used Bafsky/Bofsky for about 10 years first. They landed in Baltimore, Maryland.

Israel, Harry, Samuel and Abraham came separately from the mother and the rest of them. They went to Philadelphia then Chicago then some went back to PA and some out to CA, with some back and forth between them. Harry, Israel and Samuel stayed in PA/NJ. Rubin(Robert), Myer and Benjamin stayed in CA. The naturalization record I posted was another relative, with the witnesses being Samuel and his oldest son Max, so that was a related record. Rubin/Robert was not born in Chicago at all, but in Russia.
Roberts family was very large and spread across from NJ, PA, IL to the West. There could have easily been a few in Indiana.

Good luck searching!

Just want to clarify for any others what the end result was. Robert BYER was born in IL in 1898. There are five brothers that I have confirmed: Harry Bafsky, Israel Byer, Myer Bafsky, Benjamin Byer and Robert Byer. A 6th unconfirmed brother is Samuel- lived close to them. Harry and his wife Libby have an oldest son named Samuel and a daughter named Rose (after Harry;s mother?)Israel had the last name Bafsky with his wife and kids in a early census and then changed it to Byer. Harry and Myer kept Bafsky. The Abraham Bafsky with girls born in IL living in Michigan is an interesting possibility, but I am fairly certain there is no connection because the age of Abraham is so far off. It is still a possibility though as census' are always wrong one way or another. Benjamin and Robert are living in the same house in PA according to the WW1 records. I don't have a mother confirmed, but since Myer is their brother, I am going with Rose.

Hi! Yes, this is the group I am trying to detangle. I know that Myer Bafsky WAS the uncle of my father in law. The question is whether Myer was his father Robert's older brother OR his Grandfather Abraham's brother. It sounds like your source shows Myer's father as Abraham. That makes me think that Myer was Robert's older brother, although there could be more then one Abraham in the family. I know that Robert was born in Chicago in 1897 and his age fits right in with the girls in the house of Abraham in Michigan.

My father in law talks of going to New Jersey as a small boy to visit his fathers family. They had moved out to Los Angeles by then.

So, your wifes Grandmother was a child of Celia and Myer. My father in law talks about Myer driving a gigantic cadillac around.

If Myer' fathers name was originally Bafsky and not Bayefsky, then I have tangled up the wrong guy in all this. If Robert and Myer were brothers 15 years apart (quite possible) then what you have firmed up is also true for me! Thanks! The naturalization I found is on Footnote. I no longer below to that site, but saved the document to mull it over. I attached it here. Please email me at outwest6112@yahoo.com and I can share the other documents I have (and a few Myer stories, too). I am not sure if this site will support the pdf file I attached here.

I've just started researching my wife's family history. Her grandmother was Faye (or Fanny) BAFSKY, the daughter of Myer BAFSKY. Myer and his wife Celia had a number of children born in Chicago before moving out to California. Myer was born 1 Jan 1885/6 (the Social Security death index shows 1886, while the California Death Index shows 1885) in Carlick, Russia to Abraham BAFSKY and Rose KRACHEFSKY.

Also in Chicago in 1910 where two brothers, Harry and Isreal BAFSKY living together with their wives and children. The census shows him born about 1883. On his World War II draft registration document it shows him born in Karlick, Russia on 18 Nov 1882 (his World War I draft registration gives his birth date as 15 Jul 1881.) He is located in Philadelphia by the 1920 census.

There is also an Abraham E BAFSKY that crops up around the place. He was born around 1865 in Russia and is listed in Manguagon, Wayne, Michigan on the 1920 census where two of his four children are shown as being born in Illinois. His wife last residence on the Social Security Death index is shown as New Jersey.

I would be interested in the details of Abraham's naturalization, including the site where that is listed. I'm also struggling with locating a few of the other details you mention and so have been unsure how certain the connection is.

Craig Pickup

Bayefsky

I have discovered that Abraham Byer's original name was Abraham Bayefsky (close to what you mentioned)(I found a naturalization record on another site!). That makes a lot of sense since I know Robert had an Uncle named Myer Bafsky. If you take the y and e out of Bayefsky you get Bafsky. Why would he choose that name instead of Byer like the rest of the family? Well....his name was Myer. He probably didn't want to be Myer Byer!

So, I believe that Robert Byer's father was named Abraham and he had a brother named Israel. They lived in New Jersey, Illinois and Michigan (of all places). I believe that the lone Byer family in Michigan is them, too. The reason is that Roberts birthdate and the people in the house coincide with the correct places of birth. There is a gap between two girls born in Illinois where he would fit. He was out in California by this time. That family has an American native woman as the mother, but Abraham was born in Poland/Russia. Second wife??

Re: Robert Byer Israel/Abraham

It does sound like there is a connection. My father in law says that his father (Robert) always had the last name of Byer and that Roberts father (Abraham, I believe) also was Byer, but may be the one who changed it. The clue is Myer Bafsky (he used to visit him as a boy and always called him Uncle). My father in law says he thinks he changed the name, too, but not as drastically as Abraham. Myer was born in Russia in 1886 and immigrated in 1897 (the year before Robert was born), but Abraham came before that (born 1852). Roberts WW1 card (he lied on it, by the way, my father in law knew that) shows his father to be Abraham Byer of Egg Harbor, NJ. I know it is his card because the signature matches his signature. The only Abraham there is living as an old man with Israel.

The problem is, I can't find Robert in any of their houses. It is like he is nonexistant before 1930 when he is finally found in Los Angeles at 32 years old.

There is a Harry Bofsky in the same neighborhood as Abraham Bofsky in Chicago in 1910.

I think Abraham and his unnamed wife lived apart or she died or something.

There are four places to investigate: Chicago, Philadelphia and New Jersey. There is also an interesting possibolity in Michigan of all places! The only Jewish family there.

It's just frustrating because it wasn't that long ago!

I have an Abraham Byer born in Russia abt. 1852. I don't have a wife for him but I have him with 6 children. One of his son's was Israel Byer born July 15, 1883. Israel Byer had a brother named Samuel who is my great grandfather. Samuel Byer was born in Odessa, Russia in about 1877.

I don't have much on Israel Byer but Samuel Byer his brother died in 1942 in Pleasantville, New Jersey.

My mother told me that she remembers that the family was told that their surname was something like Byefsky or something like that and when they came to the United States it was changed to Byer.

Some of my Byer family ended up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

I wish I had more to share with you for a possible connection. Most of what I have is on Samuel Byer and his descendants and some Cohen's.

If you want to e-mail me directly just write to:
Matthew Lindsay
MSLindsay1@hotmail.com

Thank you for your time!
Robert Byer Israel/Abraham

I am really at a stumbling block with my husbands family. His father did not even know his grand parents names. His father was Robert Byer, born in Chicago, Ill in 1898. He had an Uncle named Myer Bafsky. His fathers name looks to be Abraham Byer in NJ (WW 1 registration card) with a possible brother named Israel. I can't find any likely Byer's in the 1900 census though. They all came from Russia/Poland around 1895/6. It is possible the name was changed to Byer to anglicize it. My father in law says his father Robert (Bob) came from a family with lots of kids. That is really all he knows. I can't even tie Myer Bafsky into them, although I can find him all over the place with his family.

Any clues?

I am very interested in knowing if the W. Conrad Byer you have been writing about is my great- great- grandfather, as I haven't been able to trace anyone further back in my father's line than him so far. The story I was researching is that he was listed as a deserter from the CSA although he was actually being cared for by a civilian family after being wounded in battle and was simply AWOL. I have copies of the official desertion documents and his obituary. My great- grandfather was John Byer, married to Edna C. Bowyer, and my grandfather was Bowyer Baxter Byers,(the "s" was added to our name sometime during his lifetime as I have great'uncles and cousins who still have the "Byer" name), married to Margaret Jane Jamieson of Scotland (his second wife). I was told that my line decends from Coonie's first wife. I would love to have any info on Coonie or his parents.
Thanks!
Sue

Frank and his wife, Mamie, were members there.

Hi! I was so excited to hear from you. I haven't been to a Byer reunion since I was a little girl. I remember thinking how much my great aunt Pearl looked like my grandmother Beulah. I also remember stopping at Walter and Lottie's store on the way to see my grandparents.

Gosh, that seems like a lifetime ago! I'm sure you know my mother, Lula Landes Rice. She moved to WV over 30 years ago, but we went to VA every weekend to see all of my grandparents.

I'm sorry - I'm just rambling away! I'd love to chat as well. I'm particularly interested in the Byer and May geneaologies, not just because I'm a family tree nut, but also to do a litte "medical" investigating regarding potentially hereditary illnesses.

Anyway, Joan, I'm so looking forward to "speaking" with you. I live in Indiana now - with I wasn't so far away as I'd love to meet you in person. Take care and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Cousin:
I am descended from Charles Preston Byer and Alice Blanche May, Charles Walter's parents. Charles' brother, John Wesley Byer was my grandfather. I think you have something wrong in your post, though. Charles Walter's wife was Lottie Curry and his mother was Alice May. That is if you are speaking of this line.

I still live in Alleghany County and have attended the Byer Family reunions they have every year at Lake Moomaw. I have been to the home place and personally knew some of the brothers and sisters of whom you speak.

I would love to talk with you and exchange information.

Joan Byer Hawse

I have no idea where it came from. I thought that someone might want it then I went online, typed the name and now you have responded. I had a few drinks last night, and frankly I forgot about the whole thing.... Amazing what alcohol does for a guy.... If you want the pic, I'd be happy to send it to you as you would likely appreciate it more than I. email me your adress and I will try to get it out tomorrow. I will be camping on a fishing trip in the Everglades for all of next week and won't have any way of communication until 10/23/06 I'm at my office right now and I will leave here at 5pm EST Cheers, Gary goconnor@legendgroup.com

Lozer = Lesser????

In my research I have come across a "Lozer" Byer (spelled Baer by the translators). This name was in the 1887 Revision List for Josvainia, Lithuania. Lozer, son of Abram was born circa 1874. Abram, son of Orel, was born in 1833 in Zeimiai, Lithuania. This is the shtetl of my g-g-g-grandfather Leyb Baer. I have already made a few family connections to the extensive lineage of Leyb Baer (had no less than 5 sons) and at least two branches immigrated to the US between 1880 and 1920. They were known to each other and in some cases intermarried. I have not made any connection to the Rochester Byer's except for decendants who ended up movng there in the late 20th century.

Byer clan from northeast Ohio--Newton Falls

My grandmother used to take me to the big reunion there, but it's been 25 years at least.
Looking for some info on Mira (Almira?) Byer 1850-1941. She married Isaac Harmon. They moved to Akron, Ohio. Their children were Lucy, Archie and Pearl. Lucy was my gr-grandmother.
Mira had a brother John.
There has been a little confusion over whether the name is Byer or Byers.

Any information going either forward or back would be apppreciated.
Thanks!
