My grandparents Dr. Roy M. Byram and Dr. Bertha Stanley were imprisoned by the Japanese in late 1941, shortly before Pearl Harbor, while missionaries in Manchuria, then occupied by the Japanese. I have copies of several documents relating to this experience:
"Expelled from Manchoukuo by Roy M. Byram, M.D. M.S. Gripsholm, South Atlantic, August 7th, 1942" a type-written report by Roy Mack Byram of his experience written while on board the repatriation ship Gripsholm after being released.
"Why We Stayed Roy M. Byram, M.D." a type-written report by Roy Mack Byram explaining why he and his wife, Bertha, remained in Manchuria even after being warned to leave by the American State Department.
"God's presence in a Japanese Prison" by Bertha Stanley Byram - the first pamphlet in a series published by The Independent Board for Presbyterian Foreign Missions
"Brought Before Governors for a Testimony" by Bertha Stanley Byram - the second pamphlet in a series published by The Independent Board for Presbyterian Foreign Missions
"If I Perish I Perish" by Bertha Stanley Byram - the third pamphlet in a series published by The Independent Board for Presbyterian Foreign Missions
"Prison Songs" - "Songs written by Mrs. Bertha S. Byram and Mr. Bruce F. Hunt while in solitary confinement during the days between October 22, 1941, and February 6, 1942, when they and Dr. Roy M. Byram were imprisoned in Antung and Harbin Manchuria with more than thirty of their Korean Christian friends on charges arising out of their opposition to Japanese State Shinto and a law for the government control of the church."
Eventually I will be placing these documents on a web site. For the time being e-mail me and I will be glad e-mail copies of these documents to you.
