Do you have any male relatives with surname Byrne or Byrnes? If so, a DNA test might connect them to Co. Louth Byrnes. We have eight in our Louth group (see Lineage IV at www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/byrne/results) and about 28 in a nearby Monaghan group (Lineage III).

How did you get so far back in your Co Louth roots? I am having a hard time or maybe I am not looking in the correct place. Been doing genealogy 40 years, you would think I would have a handle on this... LOL!

My grandfather, Francis Byrnes was born in Dundalk, Co Louth. He came to NYC to live with his father's sister. He came over with two older brothers. I have made connection with the descendents of the two older brothers, however, it's making connections with those who stayed in Ireland.

I have my great grandparents (John and Catherine) marriage certificate, my great grandmother's death certificate and the 1911 census, as well as my grandfather's birth certificate and a few of his siblings as well.

My great great grandfather was Peter Byrne (John's father, deceased when married) and Owen Dunne (Catherine's father, living when she married).

I am at a lost here... any guidance would be so greatly appreciated. I'm pretty darn good when it comes to researching in the US... however, overseas, I am a lost puppy!

Thank you so very much. It would be interesting to see if your BYRNES and mine were connected. I'm sure they all are, but at what time frame?

Annmarie

John Byrnes (Byrne)

My great grandfather was John Byrnes (as spelled on the 1910 Irish Census. I have a Michael on this census, but his name is crossed out? I wonder why? He was married to Catherine Dunne (the daughter of Owen Dunne, as per the marriage certificate with John and Catherine. John's father is listed as Peter (deceased). Owen was living when John and Catherine married.

My grandfather was the youngest of their children. Catherine died at age 38, when my grandfather was 2. At 4, he came to live in NYC with his aunt, Mary, sister to John. She was married to a Central Park Cop, Cornelius Mulvey. My grandfather came over with 2 older brothers. I ran into a 2nd cousin at the LDS Library... who is the granddaughter of one of the two older brothers. Only about a year or two ago, I made contact with another 2nd cousin, the grandson of the other older brother. And the funny thing is... our grandfather's settled in NYC, but we 2nd cousins all reconnected in Virginia! LOL!

I am making plans to visit Ireland (Co Louth, Ardee, Castlebellingham, Dundalk areas, where I know the family was...only back to 1898 time frame.)

Having a hard time with finding info on both Peter Byrne (there are SO MANY of them!!!) and Owen Dunne. I know I still have cousins in Ireland, and I have made newspaper postings, to no avail! :(

My grandfather was Francis and his two brothers were Eugene and Peter. I have made connections with the two brothers in the US... but not so lucky with those that stayed in Ireland.

Any tips from those who are in Ireland would be greatly appreciated! My plans are to visit Ireland Summer time frame of 2014, if not sooner ... has to be when school is out, as I want to take my two sons with me, I want them to experience what I am researching and walk where their ancestors once did!

Thank you so very much!
Annmarie

I am responding for a friend. I am looking for the family of Jack Byrnes. He was born app 1916. The story I was told... Jack's father drowned when a bridge in Missouri washed out. Jack was given up for adoption after his father died. Byrnes is his given surname not the name of his adopted family but that is hearsay. His birth-date is also hearsay. The whole story is hearsay, so if any of this sounds remotely familiar please contact me at ginnyt22@yahoo.com or respond to this post.

I have a William Wesley Byrnes that I am trying to find information about. He was born March 21, 1925 and died Sep 1984. He was my grandfather, whom I never met. My cousin and I were told he was adopted, but so far we have been unsuccessful in finding out anything on an adoption. However, I believe that I found his family. The parents listed are Pauline L(Lambie) Burrs or Buress(her name is a variation of Buress) and Micheal Byrnes. If you or anyone else has information on William W Byrnes, please message me. Somehow, I have ended up with numerous brothers and sisters on his side and his parents side, and am not sure who should really be on there. Sometimes the Census records are confusing or the spellings and names are changed and it adds them. :( I have also found 2 different SSN's for the same name and birth/death dates. That is where I think maybe the adoption took place and possibly he was given a different SSN. Not sure though. Thank you for any help. :)

P.S. Please feel free to look at my family tree and if you recognize anyone, please message me with any further information, pics, stories, records you may have. Thank you.

Re: Byrnes Dwyer families Kilkenny Ireland

This is a response to both Rick Cowey and Debbie:

In San Francisco Bay area of California are two well-known Byrne(s), John Dwyer and Garret John, Irish immigrants who together or separately may connect to your stories. Both are from Kilkenny and both had extensive business dealings in the "City" but like many wealthy San Franciscans of the 1850's and 1860's had homes in the less fog-bound hills of surrounding counties (named below):

1) Senator James Dwyer Byrnes, ca 1832-1903, immig to US 1851, naturalized in SF 5 years later. (I think he immigrated first to NYC and then by ship through the Straits of Magellan May 15, 1855.) He represented the 29th District in SF but after a few years in SF lived (and then died) in San Mateo of county of same name. He had adult siblings in the area: Thomas Edward, Annie, Mary, Edmund, and Ellen (m. William Feehan in SF).

I believe he also had a sister Mary A. who married William's brother John Feehan, although she was not named in his obituary. The name "Mary A." conflicts with his named surviving unmarried sisters, Annie and Mary. Yet there is no question that 1) Ellen Byrnes Feehan was his sister and 2) Ellen Feehan's and Mary A. Feehan's children were considered "double cousins"--offspring of two brothers marrying two sisters.

Conspicuous to me by their absence are the name Patrick and John in any form on the Byrnes side. The Senator was reputed to come to the U.S. at age 14 after his parents died. He made a "side trip" to New Orleans before returning to NY and marrying Margaret Crowley in 1851. I think he may have come as James Burns with his wife, two unnamed infant daughters, and Miss M. A. Burns and Miss M. Burns" from NY to SF on the same ship as his future brother-in-law William Feehan.

I speculate his parents were James or John and Ellen or Eleanor and his in-laws Thomas and Margaret Crowley. I further speculate that William and John Feehan were From Co. Tipperary, of parents William Feehan and Eleanor Quirk.

I found a William Feehan of the right age to be the father of William (already in NYC) with sons John, Patrick, and Francis, (2nd?) wife Honora and much younger daughter Mary A., b. England, in Stockport, Cheshire in 1851. John was the right age to show up in business with William in SF in 1856 and be married with first child by 1960.

John Dwyer and Margaret Crowley Byrnes' children surviving to 1903 were Margaret T. (b. NY), James E., Thomas D., and Misses Annie and Mary.

His sister Ellen Byrnes Feehan married William and had children in SF:

Margaret M.
Catherine Marie
Mary A.
Ellen Frances
Edmund Thomas
John William
James Byrnes

John and Mary A Byrnes Feehan had:

William Francis
Thomas E
Mary Ellen
John Joseph
Margaret E
Joseph E.
Edmond M. (The Edmond spelling was consistent through his life and death in early adulthood.)

Now to Garett John Byrne (1827-Jan. 1917), of Telabyrne, St. Johns Well. Kilkenny, son of John and Margaret Hoban Byrne. His base of operations was Oakland, Alameda Co. He actually returned home for a visit before he died. He married Anne McLoud, b. Nova Scotia, (parents Donald and ___ McGilivery, brother ? C. E. Mcloud living with them in 1860 SF) and had children Elizabeth, Garrett J., Jr., Robert. Martin, Allan, Charles, Bessie, James, Elizabeth T., Kate, and James H. (The various forms of Elizabeth were due to childhood mortality. I can only think that was Anne's mother's name, if Garret J's parents are correct.)

Garret, Sr's siblings were James, Nick, Martin, Bridget and Margaret, born 1827 to 1840. The two youngest died as infants.

Both men were prominent enough that there must be more information about them. As far as I know they are not related to me, but I hope this information helps. It sounds to me as if some children went West and some to the Antipodes.

I look forward to hearing of any progress,

Julie

Thank you for your message. IAs a matter of fact, I DO have a picture of Harriet Benson Byrnes and 2 other baby photos of two of her children, Sabra and Hester. If you will send me your e-mail address I will send you copies of them. We had the 2 baby pictures for years and didn't know who they were, until I contacted Bill Byrns of Kankakee, Ill, a distant cousin. He knew the names of the children of Harriet Benson Byrnes and I then recognized the names on the baby pictures.

I'm sorry, I don't have any information about her father. I believe she was described as a Southern lady...from Tennessee? I can't remember right now what state she was from, but I'll look up the reference in my notes. I also have no information about George Byrnes' religion. I know that he was a Mason, so he probably WASN'T Roman Catholic, although he was mostly Irish in ancestry.

Hope this will help you.

Marsha Roach My mother's maiden name was Byrnes, she was a great granddaughter for George W. Byrnes.

Hi Marsha -
I was wondering if you could help me. The second wife of George Washington Byrnes, Harriet N. Benson Byrnes was my cousin and I am at wits end trying to find info/photo of her with her children. Do any photos exist of Harriet and George with the children? Since I noticed that Harriet named her first daughter by George after Sabra Anna Hawkins Byrnes - I am hoping there may be some other blood relation between the two wives of George W. B. Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Harriet's family was very small but I am desperate to find more information/photos on her father, Cephas Renaldo Benson who supposedly died in 1864.

Also, could you tell me what religion George Washington Byrnes believed in?
THanks so much - Sarah

See Lineage IV at www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/byrne/results where we show the DNA profiles of over 200 Byrne, Burns, etc., including seven from Louth and 24 from adjoining Monaghan.

Hi! I have been researching some Udelhoven's in Platteville and Harrison, Grant County, Wisconsin.

I have a James Byrne (b. 1839 Ireland, d. 2 Jan 1916 Warooka, So, Australia) who lived in Harrison, Grant Co. Wis in 1880. He married Mary Ellen Harvey (b. 1835 Ireland d?).

James & Mary Ellen had a daughter, Frances Ann Byrne (b. 1858 Wisconsin) who married Joseph Udelhoven (b. Feb 1854 Wisconsin, d. 1913 Wisconsin [possibly in Platteville as he lived in Platteville in 1910]).

Frances & Joseph had 8 children, including one named Lucy Agnes.

I know it is a long & convoluted connection but I figured with a name like Udelhoven, the connection is there. From what I can tell, the Udelhoven's are a big family in the Platteville/Harrison area, with a long history.

I am willing to share any info I have and love helping someone else fill a gap in their research. You can email me: baidra at pacbell dot net.

Bests, Baidra
George LEE (England) & Mary MILLER (Scotland) - James LEE (Ireleand) & Margaret BYRNES (Ireland)

Just getting started basically.....here is what I have thus far
George LEE of England (not sure where) married Mary Miller, an Scottish girl (don't know her history).
They then moved to Ireland.
Their son James LEE (b. 1810?) was born in Ireland (Ballymena Ireland, Antrim County?) (I don't know if there were other siblings) and he married Margaret Byrnes, an Irish girl (don't know her history).
They had 2 children born in Ireland(son George b 1831) (daughter Mary, died on ship).
James Lee & Margaret (Byrnes)Lee immigrated to Canada, petitioned for a land grant from King William IV of England, which he received 200 acres in Quebec.
James LEE & Margaret (Byrnes)LEE had 13 children in total. This is my mother's Father's side.
Would love some direction, assistance, guidance, etc. Thanks Everyone. Sincerely, Debra
