Re: Byrum in Indiana from Kentucky

I am not sure you will find much on them in Madison given their date of birth and lack of records that will list the children with their parents.

Here is my latest theory about David and Sarah Byrum (S3 - I am numbering them to help keep them straight):

I believe David was the son of Ridley and Sarah "Sary" Byrum (S2). This Ridley was a son of William Byrum Sr who was married to another Sarah (S1) that was believed to be Cherokee Indian; however I have never found any proof of the Indian heritage and I believe Ridley and most of his siblings, including Henry Sr. mentioned below were born from a previous marriage.

Ridley died sometime around 1815 according to Ancestry trees but definitely before 1823. He is listed in the 1810 census in Mercer Co. KY with 1 male under 10 (David?), 1 male 26-44 (Ridley), 2 females under 10 (Hannah & Jane), 1 female 10-15 (?), 1 female 26-44 (Sarah-S2). According to War of 1812 records, he fought under Alexander A White's Company, 7th Regiment, Infantry - commanded by Colonel William Russell.

In 1823, Sary (S2) was the mother of the bride Jane Byrum in her marriage to David Vincent in Madison County, KY.

In 1828, Sary (S2) gave permission for daughter Hannah J Byrum to marry John Masters in Madison Co, KY.

In 1835, a Sarah Byrum (S2) purchased land in Decatur County (Section 17, Twp 10-N, Range 9-E, Meridian 2nd PM)

In 1840, Sarah Byrum (S2) is assumed to be living with John Masters and daughter Hannah, female age 70-79.

In 1850, Sarah Byrum (S2) (listed as Bryan) is living with John Masters and daughter Hannah

In 1860 your David Byrum's family is living next to John Master's (listed as Mosters) family

I believe David's wife Sarah (S3) was the daughter of James S Byrum and Nellie Davis. I descend from James and Nellie through their daughter Maria. I had all of the other children identified but was missing one daughter listed born around 1825. All of James and Nellie's children were married in Decatur County so I am assuming that your Sarah is the same female listed in James' 1830 and 1840 census records and because she is the only Byrum marriage in Decatur around that time frame that wasn't identified as one of James' children.

My James Byrum is believed to be the son of Henry Sr. and grandson of William Sr mentioned above; he was born in NC before coming to Madison Co, KY. As far as I can tell only some of Henry's and Ridley's children went to Decatur, IN from Madison (vs other children of William) which is another reason I think your David and Sarah belong to these arms of the tree.

Also, David and Sarah's children's names are the same names used repeatedly much to my chagrin in the Byrum family tree.

My email is loveandchu@aol.com if you would like to compare notes more.

If my theory is right, then your David was my James' first cousin. I think that makes your Sarah a first cousin once removed of David's.

Thank you for the response. I will try to do some checking in Madison County, Ky records for them. Although records in the early 1800's are rare.

Davis and Sara are my Great Great Grandparents. Are you related to them as well?

I don't have exact dates of death for David and Sara.

David disappeared off the 1880 US Census in Indiana. So I assume he died before 1880.

Sara was still living in 1880 and was in the U.S. Census. So she died after 1880 and I assume before 1890.

1880 US Census Indiana, Decatur County, Marion Township
shows ...James - 31yr, Suean - 21yr (wife to James), Sarah - 62yr ... Vira (Elvira) - 17yr, Sarah 12yr and John A. - 14yr

This is an old post so you probably have done more research on this line - but I believe Sarah was a daughter to James S Byrum and Nellie Davis. David most likely was from the same Byrum clan in Madison County, KY.

Do you know when David and Sarah died?

Byrum's of Bertie County, North Carolina

Howdy --

I descend from Mary Ann Elizabeth Byrum (1849-1923) and her husband, Joshua Allen Hawkins (1837-1892). Mary AE [Byrum] Hawkins's people came from Bertie County, NC. They were married in Robertson County, Texas in the late 1860s. His census said he came from Alabama. Where had they met? How'd they wind up in Texas? Maybe the Civil War had something to do with their moving westward.

-- Mary Ann Elizabeth Byrum and Her Family --

Joshua's wife was Mary Ann Elizabeth Byrum. I used to wonder where Joshua met her, hoping that would help me find the origins of both families. I found her parents in North Carolina. I ran into descendants of Mary AE Byrum's brother. They too, were in Robertson County, Texas. Joshua must have met her, and married her in Texas, it seems.

Here is where we first find Mary, Joshua's wife --

1850 census Bertie County, North Carolina, no township given
none, family # 165

Edward Byrum, 24, farmer, NC
Mary Byrum, 37, NC
Starkey Byrum, 2, NC
Mary A. E. Byrum, 5/12, NC <=> [my ancestor]
Job Gregory, 28, comments: idiotic, NC [note: perhaps Edwards wife was a Gregory?, and they were looking after a disabled relative, maybe Mary's brother?]

1850 census Bertie County, North Carolina, no township given
132, 1015

Starky Byrum, 44, farmer, North Carolina
Elizabeth Byrum, 43, North Carolina

1860 census Bertie County, North Carolina

Starky Byrum, 51, farmer, North Carolina
Elizabeth Byrum, 51 o 57, North Carolina

[This elder Starky is probably a close relation, maybe a father or an uncle?]

I have a copy of a a couple of pages of the Byrum family Bible sent to me by a descendant of Starkey, great grandma's brother. The Bible record says --

Edward Byrum was born October the 26th, AD 1825 (Lula Mae's great grandparents)
Mary L. Byrum his wife was born the 10th of January AD 1813.
Starky Edward Byrum their son was born the 28th of December AD 1847.
Mary Ann Elizabeth their daughter was born the 13th of December AD 1849 <=> my ancestor
Mary E. Calvert was born April the 11th the year 1855 (Lula Mae's grandmother)

Catie J. Byrum was born in Robertson County, Texas on the 16th of September AD 187?3?
Laurah Loucinda Byrum was born in Robertson County, Texas, on the 8th of April AD 1875.
James Henry Byrum was bornin Robertson County, Texas, on the 5th of September, AD 1877.
Walter Edward Byrum was born in Robertson County, Texas on the 26th of August, AD 1879 (Lula Mae's daddy).

I was sent a photo of Starky. Dad said he saw his grandma only once, and said that she was a “great big red headed woman.” When I emailed some of the Byrum's (descendants of Starky) they said they didn't know about the red hair. I don't know how accurate Dad's description was. She died in 1923 and he was born in 1915, so he had to have been a small child when he met her.

If you look through early records, our Byrum's were in Bertie County, North Carolina, from early colonial days. But I don't know how to find Edward's father. Maybe it is Starky Sr, but maybe not.

Any help appreciated.

thanks,

Vance Hawkins

Hi Steve - I have Byrums in my family tree as well. The Byrum that appears is my great Grandmother Henrietta Elizabeth Byrum who was born in Tullahoma,Tn in 1871. She married my Great Grandfather Albertus Benjamin Bohannon on Christmas Day 1887. She died June 1,1955 and is buried here in Memphis at Elmwood Cemetary. Her last name when she died was Swick. I'm not sure if there is a connection but she was a Tennessee Byrum. Let me know if I can help more. Chuck Bohannon (cyrano91@bellsouth.net)

I did find Hiram in the 1860 census living in Clay Twp, Decatur County, IN. His name is spelled Byrom, 23 yrs. old, born Ohio, pg. 118. I can't get my Heritage Quest to work to look this census up and see who he is living with.

The book I mentioned has no IN Byram's. I also did not find a Hiram in Ohio.

Good luck in your search!
I have found evidence of a Hiram J. Byram in the same general area, but the records don't seem to jive, Byrum was born in Indiana in 1834, Byram in Ohio in 1837. Spouses names don't match either. If you have something that would resolve this I would be very interested.

My father lives near Decatur County, Indiana (I'm in Wisconsin) so he is checking into the library and other resources for me there. I also have three brothers in Cincinnati (my original home) who are helping by reviewing the book by Velma Byrum Keller, "The Sons of Isaac" at the Cincinnati Library. I'll post any interesting finds here when I get them.

Thanks

Bourbon Co, KY > Fleming Co, KY

I am going to post some more information to see if anyone on the list/BB has any information on the Byram - Byrum - Byrom surname or families living in Bourbon Co, KY, Fleming Co, KY and Mason Co, VA (later Mason Co, WV).

The Byram connection to my family is with a marriage to Moses Knapp (b abt 1764 in NY).
Anne BYRAM/BYRUM married Moses Knapp on/abt 7 JULY 1802 in Fleming County, KY.
They migrated to Mason County, VA (later WV) by 1810.
No children were born to this union, or none mentioned in Moses Knapp's 1860 will/probate.
I do not have a birthdate or death for Anne Byram Knapp, but her death was prior to his 1842 marriage to his final wife; Anne probably died prior to the 1840 census.

Moses Knapp's first known marriage was to Elizabeth Emmons in Bourbon Co, KY in 1792.

In transcribed tax lists for Bourbon County KY, I did not find any Knapp or Emmons but I did find several Byram men:

1787>Byram, Peter + Byram, William
1788>Byram, Peter + Byram, William
1789>Byram, William + Byuram, Peter
1790>Byrum, William
1792>Byram, Edward
1793>Byram, Edward
1795>Byrim, Edward + Byrim, Lewis
1796>Byrum, David + Byrum, Edward + Byrum, Lewis
1797>Byram, Edward + Byram, Lewis
1799>Byram, Edward

I am not sure if these Bourbon Co, KY Byram men had any connection to Anne Byram + Moses Knapp who married in Fleming Co, KY ???

Since families often migrated together, I am hopeful to find ancestry clues through other family connections.

Any information, clues or suggestions would be helpful and welcome.
Thank You,
Sandi
steeler271@aol.com

BYRAM living in the household of Joseph (27) + Catherine (30) Childers in Mason Co.

These are the only Byram's I have located so far in Mason Co, VA.
I have NOT searched the early marriage, burial or court records.
It seems as if the spelling variants for this surname range from Byrum - Byram - Byrom - Biram - Birum.
---------------------

I am trying to determine if close or extended family also migrated.
Information or clues on the above families would be appreciated.

Thank You,
Sandi Ransom Stoklosa
steeler271@aol.com
John Byrum was the youngest son of David Byrum and Sarah Jaques. My greatgrandfather was John's oldest brother. They were both born in Fairbanks, Sullivan Co, Indiana. They moved to central Ohio after David either died or left his family about 1848. Sarah Jaques Byrum remarried to John Nicholas Holtsberry after she moved back to central Ohio. I am currently out of town and do not have access to my family history. If you contact me at Byrummaryville@aol.com I will share what info I have.

Mike Byrum
