Any information please on my grandmother Mabel Bythway/Bytheway's early life, believed to have grown up Colorado or California area of USA during 1880's. Died Guildford, Surrey January 1941 aged 59. Used to tell the tale of travelling many miles to school by horse and carriage and the horse and carriage drove THROUGH a HUGE tree on the way to school. Could this have been The famous Wawona Tree which fell in 1969, if so where could Mabel have been going to school. Mabel's parents owned/ran a fruit ranch. Mabel married a surname Beattie (Canadian?) but Mabel's father and husband were killed in train crash taking fruit to market. Mabel and mother came to England believed around 1900 and settled there, Mabel working at Darenth Asylum in Kent prior to 1904 where she met my grandfather. They married in 1905 in Guildford, Surrey iand settled in St. Johns/Knaphill, Surrey.
