Southern French and Catalan (Caba;, Caban): possibly from Occitan caban, gaban ‘coat wth large sleeves’, applied as an occupational nickname for a Provençal farmer, or perhaps a topographic name, from a masculine form of cabana, cabanya ‘cabin’, ‘hut’ (Late Latin capanna). The form Cabañ would be the Castilianized form of Cabany.
