Cabans in Puerto Rico Origins

Does anybody know where the first Puerto Rican cabans originally came from? I'm not asking about a town, or an individual... I'd be happy to start with a country!! (And wouldn't say no to a time period either). The word "caban" is French for a type of coat... so are the Caban's French? Did they possibly come with the wave of Corsican immigrants who settled in PR in the 1800s? The name is also Polish. So are the Puerto Rican Cabans descended from Polish immigrants? but it's also a month in the Mayan calendar...is the name native to PR? Does anyone have a clue?

Is anyone out there familiar with Sally Caban? She was reportedly born 1814 in Chelsea, Suffolk Co., MA-her parents might have been Samuel Augustus Caban and her mother might have been Susan Rue or Suki Rue. In 1830 She married Joseph Semon (simon) in Salem, Essex Co., MA. She had the following children that I know of, all last names are Semons (simon) William Caban born 27 May 1834; Samuel Augustus was born 01 May 1838 and Francis Augustus born was born the same day as Samuel. I recently acquired a bible that belonged to Susan Caban and it has her name and then the date 1827 next to it. The information regarding the births of the children and 2 grandchildren are listed in it with the exception of Francis Augustus our direct ancestor. I am unsure as to why he was omitted but then again this bible is very old and some pages are missing-no title page for instance. It does look as if Sally the ? daughter and mother of the above listed children obtained the bible after the death of Susan Caban. In the bible the following date is listed as the death of Susan Caban, 29 Nov 1834 aged 52 years. Does anyone have a connection to this family. I could sure use some assistance with this and would help with what little information I have on this family. Thanks in advance for your assistance in this matter.

I guess I can throw my hat in this ring. My father was Manuel DeJesus Caban Velez (1916 - 1983) and was born near Lares Puerto Rico. He married Veneranda Quiles Rivera (1919) from Florida Puerto and they settled in Arecibo. My father had an older brother who's name was Honorio. He had sisters also, but I know only the name Eleuteria.

I am given to understand that there are many Cabans in Lares Puerto Rico, so that may be a repository of information about the Caban Family name Puerto Rico.

I welcome correspondence from any who share such a lovely name.

DoD Identifies Army Casualty
The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Staff Sgt Eric Caban, 28, of Fort Worth, Texas, died on July 19 in southern Afghanistan of injuries sustained when his combat reconnaissance patrol came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire during combat operations on July 18. Caban was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C.

Hi. My step-father is looking for his father's death or info in NY around 1960, 1961,1962, etc. His parents divorced when he was small and he never knew him. I tried the Social Security Index but he wasn't listed. A daughter did/does receive SS benefits from his death but we haven't located a record of his number. Any ideas? my father guadalupe caban was born in aguada in 1927 and
married his neighbor adelaida gonzalez soto in 1953. they had
4 children wallace, lindy, rubbie, and james. grandma(d.1966)
was hernandez and loperena. grandpa(d.1971) was caban and
acevedo. grandma(d.1963) on mami side was soto and rodriguez. grandpa(d.1963) was gonzalez and did not talk a lot about the past. mami(adelaida gonzalez soto) passed 2000 and rests peacefully "en el cemeterio en agauada" if you

Son and daughter of Miguel and Lucy, lived on Prospect Avenue in NYC at one point.
After Miguel's death, they relocated to Kingsbridge (I think!) area. Carlos is an
artist...and at one point lived in Old San Juan. He also served with the Peace Corps
in Columbia years ago.

My father Carlos Caban has recently told me that the Caban family of Lares is linked to the Toledo, Reyes, Gonzalez and Nieves families of that area. He was the son of Jose Caban and born in Cataño, PR. José was at one time an orderly for a US Army officer named Carlos Maria de Hostos, hence my dad's middle name. I've also found out that there have been three other Caban's involved with police work. He mentions a Federico Caban who was a police chief in Vega Alta or Baja (can't decide), a Juan Caban who was a Precinct Commander (place as yet unknown), and a Pedro Caban who worked in the La Perla community years ago. If you have any additional information please let me know.
