Re: Matthew or Nathan Cabaniss?

George was a very common name in that family as was Matthew. It would help people find your answer if you supplied more info such as approximate dates, what records do you have for this person, etc. If you have two different records of death, I would say right away that you have two different Georges. People don't die twice in two different places although probate records for one person can appear in different places if there is land or an heir somewhere besides where the person died. This is just another example of why documentation is important. A compiled family history or genealogy prepared by someone else is not documentation. It is hearsay. Documentation means documents: censuses, deeds/land records, marriage bonds/returns/licenses, wills/probate, tax lists, court records of all types, church records. Family Bibles can count as documentation if the data was recorded as it happened and not just inserted many years later when memories have dimmed. Likewise, letters, diaries and journals can be wonderful sources if they are recording events as they happened. Stories and reminiscences can point the way but are not "proof" by themselves. Also, it is important to seek ALL of the documentation as there might be mistakes or discepancies which need to be evaluated and reconciled. Like I said in another post, this stuff is complicated! It sure is fun though when you find an answer you know beyond doubt is the true one. Then you get to shout down the rest of us who have it all wrong! -------Jo

Re: Headright Quandary

Magdalene is the daughter of Magdalene the second wife of Henri (the immigrant, I will continue to spell his name in the Franch way). She may or may not be Henri's daughter. Another of my quandaries is why Henri paid for the passage of Magdalene (mother) and Magdalene (child). She (the mother) could not have been a relative or Henri wouldn't have been able to marry her. Yet there he is claiming the headrights for the two Magdalenes and it states one is his second wife and the other is "her" daughter. I see three possibilities: 1) Magdalene was Henri's girlfriend/mistress. That kind of thing happened and if this is the case, Magdalene (the child) could have been his. 2) Magdalene (mother) paid for the passage of herself and her daughter but once she married Henri, he "owned" whatever she owned and could therefore claim the headrights. I am not sure about the law on this as women had dower rights to land and could own other property outright (like slaves) so I don't know if the headrights would become Henri's upon marriage. 3) Something else I haven't thought of yet! I am going to have to switch gears for a while and probably won't get back to this question until July or later. As for Henry the son of Henri, most people seem to think he was the child who came with Henri and his first wife Mary/Marie on the ship Mary & Ann although I've not seen documentation. He did certainly marry a Jane Allen. Somehow he doesn't get mentioned in the headright claim cited above. I've been thinking about that quandary, too. I read somebody said he was born at sea and if so, that would explain the lack of a headright. Henri had to prove in court that he had paid passage for those he claimed a headright for. There would be no such payment or proof of same for a child born on the voyage. Still, I am a stickler for documentation and haven't seen any for this. As for Matthew and George, most folks say the third wife Mary (Harrison) was their mother but again I've seen no documentation so I would say Matthew's mother could have been any of the wives and George's could have been either the second or third. This stuff is complicated! We have got to demand and seek documentation if we care about getting the correct ancestors. So, look around and see if you can find an expert on Colonial VA headrights (other colonies had different rules). There must be one somewhere! Then put the problem to this person (you can quote my original post) and see if s/he has any ideas about what the confusing data means and where we might find documentation. Also, look for baptisms and marriages of these folks to see if those documents provide any info. I'm not going to hold my breath for the appearance of such evidence but I sure would be happy to see it. Message boards, like other internet venues, can be useful tools of communication but I am afraid that a good many serious and knowledgeable genealogists are driven away by the totally unsupported nonsense which is too often posted. Maybe we could make this board a good source of reliable data!!! -------Jo

Headright Quandary

In 1700, Henri arrived on the Mary & Ann with wife and one child. In 1705, he got naturalized and could then own land. 1 May 1708, he claimed 200 acres in headrights. I quote from the Henrico County VA Order Book 1707-1709, p35, "for the importation of him self and Mary his first wife, with Magdalane his second wife and Magdelane her Daughter to this Colony". So, what happened to that child who came with them on the Mary & Ann? If s/he had died, that would not matter as "Mary his first wife" had died and he could still claim her headright. Also, please note that Henri must have paid the passage for "Magdalane his second wife" and her daughter. Thus, this Magdalane is not Mary Harrison who was already in Virginia and is therefore his THIRD wife. Does anybody have evidence concerning these people? Does anybody have documentation such as marriage records or church records? Does anybody have evidence as to which woman was the mother of which child? Does anybody have any information concerning what became of the daughter Magdelane? (Does anybody besides me care?) -------Jo

Hi all,

I am curious as to who the father of George A. Cabaniss is. There are many reports suggesting Matthew Cabaniss is the father, however I came across a document that says Nathan Cabaniss, Rev. Soldier of VA is the father of George. It also states that George Cabaniss died in Baldwin Co and not Jones Co in Georgia. Can anyone clarify this? Could Matthew be Matthew Nathan CAbaniss and went by either of his names? I appreciate any clarification on this.

Sincerely,

Beth Gubbins

Where in France was he born and what history prior to coming to the US.
I have a copy of the book done by Allen Cabaniss, which covers the first 5 generations.
There is also a reference to a Cabanis who went on the 2nd Cursade. Anyone have any info on this one?
Marion T. Cabaniss

Trying to discover father of Marion T. Cabaniss, who is my GGGrandfather. He was born in 1841 and died 9 Sep 1863. He first shows up on the 1850 census of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama and married Elizabeth Crawford of Tuscaloosa in 1857. He enlisted in the 41st Alabama Infantry, Company A as a Private and may have been promoted to 2 Sgt. It appears he may have had a brother name Alexander in the same outfit. Nothing is known of his whereabouts either. He is buried at Dunn's Creek Cemetary in Echola, Ala. There is another Marion C. Cabaniss born in Coosa County Alabama, but he is a different Marion. Any help on Marion T. Cabaniss parents or his death would be appreciated.

Lauren
Thanks for your reply. I am familiar with the information you sent me. However, I can't find any real evidence of who Marion's real father/mother is/were. Peter Cabaniss is believed to have died (1835 or so) before Marion was born (1840/1), so it is strange that a father or mother would leave their children (Marion had two siblings also (Alexander and Erasmus or Rasmus)to a widow, in this case Catharine Mayfield Cabaniss. Joe's site is an excellent site and much of his information was provided by Allen Cabaniss a professor at Ole Miss. However, he has since passed away I think. Otherwise, I continue to try and track down info on John Coleman Cabaniss which so far I haven't found any. Any other info on him would be greatly appreciated. Again thanks for responding.
Ralph Cabaniss
Northport, Alabama

Frankie,
Yes, I do have some information, but precious little. It seems as though Erasmus died at Camp Abbington, Tennessee sometime during the civil war. I haven't pinned down the date yet or exactly where Camp Abbington was but I am still working on that. Also, I don't know why he died, whether from illness or wounds.

I talked with Gladys Freeman Cabaniss wife of Nelson Cabaniss of Tuscaloosa, this morning and she had asked me whether or not I had gone over to Belk to see Rasmus' grave and I told her that I had. I also took pictures of the headstone they had placed for him.

We are having a Cabaniss-Freeman reunion on July 7th at the Northside Lions Club in Samantha. Do you think you might be able to attend? This is for all Cabanisses. Let me know and I will tell you exactly how to get here.
Ralph

Donna
The John Coleman Cabaniss that spent time in Tuscaloosa, Alabama during the 1830s/40s went to California during the Gold Rush. He first shows up in San Francisco around 1850 and supposedly there is an obituary stating his death around 1857 in San Francisco. Type in J.C. Cabaniss or Cabiness in Google or Yahoo and it should bring up some city tax assessments with him listed.
There is a possibility that this John C. Cabaniss married Catherine Mayfield Cabaniss a widow of Peter Randolph Cabaniss who died in 1834, but so far I have had no luck tying the two together. Peter and John I believe would have been cousins.
Is this John Coleman Cabaniss the same one as your GGGGGrandfather?
Ralph Cabaniss

William Park Cabaniss was my GGrandfather. He was married the second time to Mary Elizabeth Brinkley Bradford. The family bible of Mary Elizabeth has his first wife listed as SM Bowls. It could be that she mispelled her name in the bible. My Aunt has the bible in her home.
Wp and Mary are the parents of my GrandMother Cora Ethel Cabaniss Sain. She married my Grandpa Sain Robert Gardner Sain March 26, 1911.
I am needing to know if anyone would know for sure where she was born? I think its in Cerro Gordo, Ark but not for sure. I do know that they married in that town in 1911.
I was just posting some family info I had in case anyone has anything to add to it.
Where do you tie into the family?
Dear Joe,
Thanks so much for the explanation. WOW I sure was confused. Now tell me how he can be your cousin and be removed twice. :-)
I guess you think I'm nuts but being new to this there is so many things I don't know.
I had your website. A lady sent it to me and I'm not sure who it was. I think it was Susan Bradford. She saw my post with W.P.'s wife and she was a Bradford at one time too.
I have asked my Mom and my Aunt how they remembered the Grands calling W.P. Mom says that they called him William Parks and My Aunt said Grandma always called Mr. Cabaniss. So conflicting names there.
The family bible that my Aunt has says W.P. and thats all about him. I haven't seen it but I do want to go over and look at it and see what it says. Maybe she missed a part that might have listed him with his full name. All his siblings were listed with initials, the boys anyway.
I will look at your web site and see what you have.
Do you have the info on W.P.? I will send it to you if you want.
Have a blessed day, Linda Kirby Branum

Hi Joe,
Wow this languege is sure hard on an Okie? :-)
We just call them first, second and third cousin. I need to study on this one!!!
I will send you the info on W.P. Do you want it on here or do you want me to send it to you on e-mail? My e-mail addy is mamalin@1s.net.
I guess it would be good to post it on this also in case anyone else has anything to add.
Thanks for trying to explain to me what this means I will have to really think this all over.
My Aunt has the original bible of Mary Elizabeth Brinkley Bradford Cabaniss she was W.P.'s second wife.
I need to get over to her house and look closely at the bible so I can see what it says. My Aunt was reading it to me over the phone and she really didn't understand to much on it as she really hasn't been into any genealogy and she also says its written in a strange script and its really hard to read.
As soon as I do that I will get back with you on all of the info. I will try and do it tomorrow. Let me know if you want me to send it on this or in e-mail.
Hope you have a wonderful night.
W.P. is my GGrandfather he is my Grandmother Cora Ethel Cabaniss's father. He and Mary Elizabeth Brinkley Bradford Cabaniss had twins born Sept 17, 1893 their names were Lula Bell and Lela May they died when they were three wks old. They had my Grandmother Cora Ethel Cabaniss on April 4, 1895. I have yet to know where she was born but Mom thinks she was born in Cerro Gorda, Ark. GrandMa went by Ethel Cora but the family bible has her listed as Cora Ethel. There is a whole lot more to add and I will send you what I have as soon as I check the bible. I have several pages of decendents of W.P. but remember they will be on the Sain side.
I guess if you have his sibling's names that will help you too.
Let me know how you want me to send this. I'm looking forward to hearing from you again soon.
Regards, Linda Kirby Branum

This would be my grandmother if the spelling of Cabiness is correct. Cabaness or Caviness? Father was James W. Cabiness. Maggie, mothers name was Hazel Time Cabiness Think so! Lived a while in Attalla Co. Miss. Think Maggie died in 1939 Oak Grove,La. Don t know if this is the same Maggie Cabiness or not.
