Interestingly enough, I also have a photograph with J. Thurgar Jerrard, Managing Director LMPA(London Mutual Photographic Association) Limited, 170 Fleet Street, London stamped on the back. I assumed that it was the photographer's studio in which the photo was taken. I have no idea who is in the photo but I entered the photographer's name into google on the off-chance it would give me some kind of clue and this message turned up.

Hi,
My name is Derek Nicholas, the great-great-great-great grandson of John Nicholas, a slave of the Cabell family in Lovingston, VA. He was born in the year 1810. His son was named Washington Nicholas born 1845. I believe the Nicholas family of slaves, acording to the Cabell letters, were passed down to Nicholas Cabell, from his grandfather, William H. Cabell. A woman name Harriet, believe to be his spouse, had two daughters named Malina, and Jane.

Washington Nicholas, married a woman named Sophia Diggs. Sophia's mother's name was Susan Diggs. Washington and Sophia had a son, named William Nicholas (my great-great-great grandfather). William Nicholas, married a woman named
Julia Venerble alt. spelling(Venable). Julia;s father's name was Noah Venerble. I believe Noah married a woman named Susan Woodson. All were from Lovingston, VA
Any, more detail inforamtion, would be greatly appreciated.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10307940/family/pedigree#pedi...

Here are some names of Cabells that were in Kentucky and I am sure that most of them owned slaves before the Civil War. I do not have a lot of info on most and found what I do have in the book "Cabells and Their Kin"

As we all know that when the slaves were emacipated that the ones that did stay to 'share crop' took the last name of their 'previous' owners.

It would be wonderful if you could find out who the 'master' of your ggggrandparent and find out where that line first emerged in the states/colonies.

Hi, I'm just getting started and looking for Cabells in Henderson, Kentucky. Apparently there is a "colored" cemetery which may have gggrandparents buried there.
There was a Harriet Cabell/James Banks marriage (probably in 1850 or so) that would be great to find help with. They had a child, Mary who married George Moss.
Thanks -

The Cabels and Their Kin, by Alexander Brown and The Twentieth Century Cabells, by Randall Cabell.

Both are informative and worth every dollar you invest in them. I just wish other family surnames would do the same.

Looking for descendants of Samuel J Cabell (white) and mate Mary Barnes. They had 13 children and she is at times listed as a "savage" which I believe refers to Indian heritage. Samuel was murdered by town peers because he would not end the relationship with Mary. An extensive will was left with Mary and her children benificiaries. Some of the children names were Eunice, Soula, Breckenridge, Bette. He is believed to be buried in W. VA near the W.VA. State College Campus. I would like to exchange info on this family as it is my line.

She was born 19 March in about 1789, probably in VA. It is assumed that she moved with her parents and siblings to Lincoln Co, KY, ca 1800 where she married William Goode 15 Jan 1806. Her father may have been William Cabell who was a neighbor in KY of William Goode and his father, Campbell Goode.

A Cabell family moved to KY ca 1800, taking with them an adolescent mulatto, Susan (Sukie). In 1806 she went with the Cabell daughter, Polly, when she married William Goode and stayed with her until after 1860. This is probably too distant to be of help. Good luck, Quentin Cabell Smith

This Cabell family is not part of my family and other Ky Cabell’s may have more info than I have. Joseph Cabell born abt 1780 married Rachael Mann and lived in Green co Ky. One of his sons was John Milton Cabell born about 1822 and he married Elizabeth Stayten. John and Elizabeth lived in Marion co Ky. By 1870 John had died and Elizabeth was a cook on the John McElroy farm. Elizabeth children were John, Joseph, Jane and Lue. This may be your great grandmother.
Here is what little I know of Joseph Cabell. Some of this information came to me yrs ago from the Ky. Historical Society. Joseph Cabell was born June 4 1780 Va. Married Nov 11 1821 to Rachel Mann. This date was wrong. The date I have is abt 1802. Died, Dec 28, 1836. Children were William born 1805 in green co Kt, married Percilla Cox. Thomas was born 1807 wife Lura Cox. George born 1810 wife Elmina Korch. Samuel born 1813 married Catharine Allen. Note received last year one of Samuel and Catharine sons James grave was located in Cave City Ky. Joseph born 1817 married Emely Sparlinng. John born 1822 married Elizabeth Stayten. Benjamin born 1824. Rachel was the daughter of Moses Mann and Fanny Bland. Some say that this Joseph is the brother of Samuel Cabell who first married Sarah Mann May 1810. After the death of Sarah about 1817 Samuel married Rebecca Campbell. Sarah and Rachel were sisters. Joseph posted bond for Samuel and Sarah. This may be so the 1810 census for green co Ky. Joseph and Samuel are neighbors. Joseph was older than Samuel and Sarah was about 15 yrs old in 1810 when she married Samuel. This Samuel parents were William and Margaret Jorden and William parents were William and Elizabeth Burks. I have no proof that Samuel and Joseph were brothers. Other researchers before me left notes in Ky that they were brothers but they couldn’t prove it.

In his will is mentioned the fact that each of his daughters at marriage received certain slaves as part of her dowry . This info was supposedly recorded in court records in VA. I am particularly interested in the names of slaves that were included in the dowry of his daughter Elizabeth who married Philip Allin of Harrodsburgh, KY.

Now I woud like to know if any documents still in family possession which indicate business transactions, etc., relative to slaves in particular, of the older Cabell who died in 1798, presumably in Hanover County,VA.

African-American Cabells

I am the great-great-grandson of Rev. Harry H. Cabell (aka "Swampwater Harry"), an African-American preacher and healer. He was born into slavery and settled in Lynchburg, VA immediately after the Civil War while he was still a boy. He stayed in Lynchburg, and he and his wife, Charlotte E. Cabell, had at least twelve natural and adopted children, including: Elsie Cabell; Payton Cabell; Mildred Cabell; Dee Dee Cabell; Mabel Cabell; Jasper T. Cabell, Sr.; Inez Cabell (my great-grandmother); Edith Berryman; Bessie Cabell; and Drake Cabell. Any information about the African-American Cabells and/or about the white Cabells who held slaves in the 1860's would be MOST welcome.

Seeking parents of Lula "Lou" Cabell or Cabel

I am trying to find the parents of Lula "Lou" Cabbell or Cabell (my ggrandmother.) The surname has been known to be spelled several different ways such as.... Cabel or Cabell. Lulu was born Abt.1864 died Nov.19, 1950 in Marion Co. KY.Lula married James "Jim" Woodrum who was born in 1862 and died March 22, 1918 in Marion Co. KY.

Lula and James had 7 children. Five girls and two boys that I know of from the family bible........
1.Jessie Woodrum - who married Richard Vandyke (my grandparents) they lived and died in Marion Co. KY.
2.Estill Woodrum
3.Georgia Woodrum who married Mont Chelf
4.Bettie Woodrum who married Martin Adams
5.Ruby who married John Wayman - they also lived in KY.
6. Roy Woodrum - he also lived in KY.
7.Lizzie Woodrum who married Leslie Purdy

* The only information I can find on Lou Cabbell is in the 1910 census where she is married to James Woodrum. She is buried in the Old Liberty Cemetary in Marion Co. KY. beside of Pearl Malone Woodrum b. 03/1883 - d. 06/1971, D.E. Woodrum b. 11/21/1887 - d. 02/06/1961, Albert T. Lis 12/18/1916, Hazel Woodrum Lis b. 11/25/1908 - d. 11/26/1999. I'm not sure yet who these people where to her. I'm not sure if she had any sisters or brothers.

I thought maybe someone may know or have some information on this Cabell line. If you do and would share with me, it would be appreciated.
Kim King

I have just started researching those names. It has taken me a long time just to get past Lue / Lou Cabell who married a Woodrum (my great grandmother). She was the daughter of John Milton Cabell and Sarah Elizabeth Staton / Stayten. I had help online with finding some of my family.

I found this in the Green Co. KY.Listing:

Marriages: Green Co., Ky. Marriages 1793-1836 Book A
CABEL/CABELL, Joseph to MANN, Rachel, bond 11 Nov 1801
CABBEL/CABELL, Samuel to MAN/MANN, Sarah 15 May 1810

I think we are talking about different people, but I have not researched back that long yet. The information that I received on my Joseph Cabell (ggggrandfather) that married Rachael Mann was that his parents were William Cabell and Elizabeth Burks. I don't have any dates or any other information on William or Elizabeth.

Do you have any information you could share with me on my line?
Thanks,
Kim
I forgot to mention that the marriage of this young couple was hidden and the record destroyed upon the decision to enter VMI as married young men were not admitted to the Institute. (The family had legal connections and could have these records destroyed evidently.) I do not know for sure but I assume the births of the 3 subsequent children were hidden as well for the same reason. Hope someone else out there has further info they may have heard passed down from ages gone by.

folklore(?) re: William Henry Cabell, VMI Cadet

I was wondering if anyone else out there has heard this story regarding William Henry Cabell, the VMI Cadet born 11-13-45, who died in the battle of New Market in May 1864. I have heard that William married very young, around the age of 15, to a young girl named Tellie, last name unknown. Tellie had a twin sister named Elizabeth. Their marriage took place shortly before the beginnings of the Civil War. When the war began in earnest, William was torn between duty of family and duty of country as many young men his age rushed to join the fight for freedom for the south. He quarrelled with his father, who was worried that he would either join the war or be forced to join and be killed in battle. So his father made a deal with him. He would provide for William and Tellie if William would enroll in VMI. By doing so, he could still serve his country and his father felt him to be somewhat safe at the institute. Oh, the irony. Anyway, William agreed and entered VMI in December 1861, about a year after his marriage to Tellie, who was pregnant by this time. She delivered twins, a boy and a girl, named Sarah Jane and Timothy. William and Tellie had a "weekend" marriage after his entry into VMI. William would come home weekends and on holidays to be with his young family. Tellie subsequently became pregnant again and delivered another boy, whose name MAY be Jonathon, but this is not for sure. After William's death at the battle of New Market in 1864, Tellie most likely married again, as she was so young, and the children were adopted by their new stepfather. I assume that this is why I am unable to locate any records on either Tellie or the three children. Hopefully someone out there has also heard this same story handed by through the generations and can either add to it with either Tellie's maiden name or information as to what happened to her and the children after William's death.
