Sorry to come along so much later, but my grandfather was Robert Cabiness (1908-1978), the second-youngest brother of James. Would be interested in connecting with any descendants of James, if you know of any.

I am the grandson of Robert Cabiness (b. 1908 in Virginia, d. 1978 in Indiana).

Robert is the son of James Cabiness (b. 1860 and d. 1936 in Virginia) and Annie Bell (b. 1863? in Virginia).

James is the son of John Cabaniss (b. 1838 and d. 1875 in Virginia) and Martha Sink (b. 1836 and d. 1917 in Virginia).

John is the son of Matthew Cabaniss (b. 1808 and d. 1885 in Virginia) and Nancy Hill (b. 1816 and d. 1840 in Virginia) OR Martha Sink (b. 1812 and d. 1862 in Virginia)

Matthew is the son of Courtland Cabaniss (b. 1774 and d. 1825 in Virginia) and Nancy Craddock (b. 1795 and d. 1868 in Virginia) OR Nancy Sink (b. 1788 in Pennsylvania and d. 1875 in Virginia).

I am looking for information on my great Grandmother. She was born in 1880. She was Ada Cabaness but shortly after she was born her mother married a Culpepper. She ended up married to Rufus Cook. They are all from the Dekalb County, Alabama area. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

As for the spelling - I am not sure Cabaness, Cabaniss, Cabiness or Cabiniss.

Can you give me a little more information on what you know about your relatives here in Alabama? I live in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama where Cabanisses/Cabinesses have been around since about 1820. Let me know which city Leonard and Swint were from and then maybe we can trace back from there.

She married William R Cabiness June 3rd, 1842 in Tuscaloosa Co, AL. Their son was George Cabiness who married a Elizabeth Carolina Moore and then Maude Smith.

Hi Ralph Cabaness.
I saw your response to someone else who was looking for information on a Cabaness.
My Joshua C. Cabbiness (spelled several differnent ways) was married to Sarah A. Mings in Macon Co. on Oct. 15, 1842. HIs name at the time was spelled Cabiniss. Hers was spelled Minge.
On Jan 8, 1842 He received/bought land - 80.060 in the St. Stephens area-land office in Montgomery, AL.
Note: That was the same year he got married.He would have been 24 at that time.
We have been told he was born in VA in 1818 - but don't know where?
Joshua also bought land - 40 acres - July 1, 1845 in St. Stephens area, Township 18N, Range 23E, Section 22.
Note: he would have been abt. 27 at the time
I do not know who his parents were - or any of his siblings.
There was also listed a John W. Cabiness who bought land on Oct. 1, 1845 in St. Stephens area, Township 18N, Range 23E, Section 15 which was 40.2525 acres.
Could this have been a brother, father or kin?
If he didn't actually live in Macon Co., he could have lived nearby, I can't seem to find in in Census.
Do you have other ways to find him Tax rolls, Census, Church, History books, etc.
I need to find his parents and siblings.
It is my belief that all the Cabbiness/Cabiness/Cabaness/Cabiniss/Caviness or anyway it has been spelled go back to the Henri/Henry CABANIS, who came over on the ship "Mary and Ann". I think he and his two wives had three sons; Henry, Mathew and George and I feel we all revert back to one of these - but WHICH ONE???

Vivian Cabiness

SHELBY - Mrs. Vivian Ledford Cabiness, 89, of 1104 Hardin Road, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Raymond Hill and Essie Blanton Ledford. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church, the Jackie Sunday School class and the Keenagers Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Verdie Lee Ledford Wright.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Everett H. Cabiness of the home; and a nephew, David H. Wright of Zebulon.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Webb Chapel of First Baptist Church of Shelby with the Revs. Tony Tench and Perry Holleman officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Entombment will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

I am seeking information on my great grandmother, Lula. James Monroe was born in Attala County MS in 1861 to James W. Cabiness, who was the son of Peter Randolph. Lula was born in 1871, also in Mississippi. They were probably married around 1883. They had several children that are listed on the census in Limestone County Texas in 1900. All children are listed as being born in Mississippi. James and Lula are buried in Van Zandt County Texas. Does anyone have information as to who Lula was? Who her parents were? Where she and James were married? She is listed on her tombstone as Lula Lee Virginia Cabiness, 1871 to 1938. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
