Try -familysearch.org- I found three records that show the Joseph Cadby who married Ann Stamps in 12th Dec.1858 at St. Philips, Birmingham - was still married to her in 1881. They are living in Harbourne, Staffs.
The parents of Joseph are, William Cadby and Charlotte Bradney, they married on 27th. August 1822 at St. Philips,Birmingham. I also found a marriage, William Cadby to an Eliza Philips, 10 April 1825 also at St. Philips, Birmingham. It is possible Charlotte died in childbirth and he married again?
I cannot find a record of Joseph to Harriet Alcock but suggest that the above people are the ones you were seeking.
Many regards from a lady with a Cadby family in Wilts.
Hi I've traced my family tree in the Cadby line as far as Joseph Cadby born in Warwickshire in 1823. I have a record that he married an Ann (Stamps?) in 1858 but there another Joseph Cadby that married a Harriet (Alcock) Firstly I'm trying to find out if its the same Joseph that married both and secondly I'm trying to find out who Joseph Cadby's father and mother were.

If anyone has any info that would be great

Mark
Just happened to see your message. My wife Lynette Clare C. is also from the Phillip Cadby lineage and has a reasonably extensive tree. The tree continues on thru her mother's side (Dunn)
You mention in your notes that Anne Cadby was born at sea in 1822. She married James Riddle in (1987 sic) 1887 meaning she was 65 when she started having 9 children. Am i misunderstanding something here?
I am willing to share info if you are interested.
My email is pconlon44@gmail.com
Regards
Paul

Hello Paul,
Thanks for your reply. I would also be very happy to share the information I have. You can contact me at minol@ozemail.com.au

I have Benjamin (and Joseph) listed as being christened in Birmingham on 7 April 1801. This date was from Peter Madden who has done extensive research.

I can confirm that Martha Cadby married Alexander Elliot COWIE on 04 Sep 1856 at the Independant Chapel (Wesleyan), Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. I have a copy of the record. I do not know Ann's (wife of William) maiden name, however I believe she may have remarried a JOHNSON, as their son Benjamin later used the surname JOHNSON interchangeably with CADBY. His father appears to have died when he was only about 8 years old, so it is likely that his mother would have had to remarry to be able to support herself and her children.

Kind regards
Heather Minol

Hi Heather
My wife's line branches off Phillip (1784) who married Alice Baylis while yours takes the William / Anne line. I have over 1800 names now. I do not have much on your line which only goes back as far as Martha and Alex Elliot (Ellicott?) Cowie (Cawie?)1836. I probably have more questions than answers like the conflicting spelling that i have (above).
Can you confirm the year born of Benjamin? New family Search has his birth as 1815 but i had info to say it was 7 April 1801 in Birmingham Eng.
Do you know the maiden name of Ann 1782 married to William Cadby 1779?
I have created a family tree chart done on Excel that took forever to create showing nearly all the Cadbys we have (Father's side) and Dunns (Mother's side)
Always willing to share
Paul FJ Conlon

Michelle Hurn and ingrid Clausen she was born in Denmark but now lives in New Zeland. She has sent me a waddle of information. Why do you think elizabeth barnes never married any of the men she was with. it seemed a bit strange because in Victorian time having chidren out of wedlock was a bit of a taboo subject. who do you think was the farther of Edward James Mayne. ive looked up the sencers for 1841 there is no Edward mayne in London that was amrried to elizabeth Barnes unless he was already married.

Any information would be a grat help kind regards carly wilson

Hi Carly, My Grand mother Selina Denton Mayne was your g. g. grandfathers sister. The Barnes in your message will be Elizabeth who is in the 1851 Census with a son Edward. She goes on to marry a Henry Mayne and this in probably why Edward changes to this name after he deserts the army in 1863. Edward describes himself as illegitimate on his death certificate and also states his mothers name as Elizabeth. His natural father was probably a Cadby. Terry

Hi Carly, my Great Grandfather Edward James Mayne (Cadby)never murdered anyone. He Married Elizabeth Cook in 1863 who was pregnant with their son who was also names Edward. His army unit left Scotland for Ireland in 1863 and Edward then deserted (he never went to Ireland). He went first to Gateshead where two more of his children were born,as his son Edward was born in Scotland he must have left on his own to avoid being posted to Ireland. The family then moved to South Shields where my Grandma, my mother and I were born. If you have not already found this out, hope this helps. Regards T

I have an Ann Cadby, mother Catherine McGrisby & father George Cadby. She was born at Sea, Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia in 1822 who arrived in Australia on the John Barry in 1824. She married James Riddle on or about the 20th Feb 1987 in Sydney and went on to have 9 children. The arrival date seems to be the only thing that does not match. I have confirmation she arrived on the John Barry from the 'New South Wales, Australia, Registers of Convicts Applications to Marry' (James was a exconvict. I cannot confirm the arrival date however but I think they were in Australia before 1835 because her father remarrid 22 Jun 1835 to Charlotte Copus in Sydneyy after the death of Catherine in 1834.

Please let me know if you have any more info on Ann and her family. I ma related via George's brother Phillip Cadby.

Regards

Mark Cadby

Thanks Carol

I'd be delighted to share the information I have and hear what you have found out. I've had some contact with Peter Madden but none recently. My mother's cousin in Cornwall is actively researching the Cadby line and from what I can gather her researches tally with Peter's findings. I'd be interested in the convict aspect ... sounds juicy!

I'd be very happy to share what I know - but my brother in South Wales and my mother's relatives in the Midlands and West of England know a lot more than I do. Perhaps the best place to start is by you asking some questions and I'll get back to you with the answers. I have some material here, but not a great deal.

We're descended from the Wiltshire Cadby's by the look of it but most of them seem to have ended up in the Midlands at some point. Mostly in Birmingham. There appears to have been some kind of Yorkshire connection at some point but nobody is very clear about that. The brother of my direct descendant, a Napoleonic War veteran it appears, went to Australia as a groom or an ostler fairly late on in life, presumably using his army pension. There were further Cadby migrations to Australia in the middle of the 19th century.

My mother has met some of the Australian Cadbys over the years. We moved there as '£10 Poms' in the early '60s but soon came back. My mother has been back many times since 1980 and looked up some distant relatives over there. Her sister, my youngest aunt, moved over there in the late '80s/early '90s and lives there still.

So, if I can't answer a question directly myself, I'd certainly be able to find out.

Many thanks

Regards

Phil Williams

Dear Phil

I am in Australia and descend from the Australian Cadbys. I have information on them if you are interested and have also been in contact with Peter Madden. I was interested to hear about the information you have and was wondering whether you are interested in sharing this. James Riddle, convict, married Ann Cadby. I have just paid the organisation in the UK, "Pastfinders" to see whether they can find out any information on James and his father who was also transported as a convict. Unfortunately they have not found much and I am having trouble getting my report from this organisation, so am not sure where they looked or what they found. I am happy to pass on what I have, which I guess if you have been in contact with Peter you may already have. I have passed on my information to Peter.
Regards
Carol

To Peter Madden

I am interested in the Cadbys. My maternal grandmother (aged 92) was one of the Birmingham Cadbys. I gather that we are descendents of the Mercy Cadby whose marriage you are interested in. I've tried looking in the records for Leeds, West Yorkshire for her marriage in 1775 but to no avail. My mother's cousin has uncovered information about Mercy, though, including a signed (marked rather) Poor Relief document she was issued with when 'taken for a vagrant' in Westminster in the late 1770s. She had two young children at the time and appears to have been temporarily estranged from her husband. They were later reunited apparently and had further children. We know a little about your Australian George and another brother who went AWOL in the Anglo-American War of 1812-14.

If I can help in any way, please get in touch.

Phil Williams

No one in the area knows anything about her and I can't seem to find her on the census's. If she is any of your people I will be glad to give you directions to the cemetery or I will be glad to send photo of tombstone.

My grear-great-great grand farther was called Edward James Cadby before he chaned his name to Mayne because he deserted the army in1863. He married a lady from Scotland and came to the North East about 1864 and settled in South Shields he staid there until 1897 left his wife for some unknown reason and died in scotland in 1912 at the age of 71. It said on the death certificate that hie was illigitimate wich we checked out and it was true in 1851 he ws living under his mother maden name Barnes. We are to beleve that his farther was one of the Cadby brothers. Ither Charles or Joseph witch one we do not know. We have herd the same rumor as you that one of the Cadbys murderd some one in Irland I think it was Edward James Mayne (Cadby). thats why he deserted the army. I have only heard bits and pease I do not know the full story. What conection he was to these two men may never be known.
They are not the same person then. My Stephen was the son of Robert Cadby and Ann Bayly. Robert Cadby was a shoemaker and later a toy dealer. Robert Cadby was the son of John Cadby, also a shoemaker, John Cadby was born in Devizes in 1753 and married Betty Whatley on 8 Nov 1775. The info I have doesn't indicate if Robert or John had any brothers. Perhaps your George is a brother to Robert or your William is a brother to John Cadby.
