You are very interesting. I am sure the Cadieux sisters were not married to Pierre(2) leGardeur de Repentigny. My husband comes from this family. I have "extrait de bapteme"I' m sorry birth certificate of that boy baptised JeanBaptiste which is an ancestor. One infant born in 1696 and the other the next year to the Cadieux sisters. They were the maids of Mr.deRepentigny which seemed to be very demanding...If you wish a copy of the birth certificate i can mail it to you. Hoping an answer.

Would like to learn more about Jean Cadieux and Marie Bourdon, my wife's ancestors regarding Native ancestry. Any reference in the usual genealogy textbooks, Jetté, Drouin or Tanguay.
I connect to Jean Cadieux's sister, Marguerite Cadieux married to Jean-Baptiste Legardeur (De Repentigny).
Changing families, are you aware of a Léger dit Parisien branch having Native roots. I'm trying to identify the major branches of families having mixed ancestry, mainly around Lac des Deux-Montagnes, all connecting to Quesnel, Lalonde, Séguin, Lamoureux and André dit St-Amand, period 1690-1725 approximately.
A Léger descendant from the region of Papineauville left a message regarding this matter. Checked her full family tree all the way to for 7 generations, but could not find any.

Peter Cadue, a Frenchman, was perhaps the first white man to make his home in Wathenas country. The time of his arrival is not now known, but it is certain that he was there as early as 1840. Like all early French settlers, he was welcomed by the indians, and made himself useful in many ways, beginning by takeing an indian maidian for his wife, and continuing by fulfilling the office as interpreter. in 1847, he left Wathenas territory and removed to Petersburg Kans, Peters Creek in Wathena, Kans is named for him.

To set the record straight about Marie Bourdon and "Mehwatta Pachirini"

Many websites claim that Marie Bourdon is an Algonkin or Ojibway named « Mehwatta ». However, up to now, no one has ever provided any proof of this.

Marie Bourdon, daughter of Jacques Bourdon, a french settler from St-Godard, parish of Rouen (Seine-Maritime), Normandie, and Marie Ménard, was born Aug. 8, and baptised Aug. 11, 1675 in Boucherville. Both her baptism and marriage record state she was legitimate and there are no document proving she was adopted.

She was married to Jean Cadieux May 30, 1695 at Boucherville. Six children were born from that union. Her first husband died in the Spring of 1709, the youngest of the 6 children whe had with him was only 14 months old.

She was married second to Antoine Quenneville, May 16, 1710 at Longueuil. Three children were born from that marriage.

The original documents are available on line at Ancestry.ca at Quebec Vital and Church Records, Drouin Collection (on subcription).

Also at the FamilySearch Pilot (free).

I've never seen any evidence or documents that she was « adopted » or going by the name « Mehwatta ».

The fact that many early members of the Bourdon, Ménard, Quennevlle and Cadieux families were involved in the fur trade as interpreters, traders and voyageurs does not imply that Marie Bourdon was Native.
« Mehwatta » is said to be a young woman who was « given » to Cadieux as his « country wife » during his stay in Calumet Island.

Legend goes that Cadieux, returning home in the spring of 1709, was attacked by a party of Iroquois. His body was found in the grave he had dug, partly covered with dead leaves, his hand cluching a crucifix and his lament, supposedly written on a piece of birch-bark by his side. History forgot a slight detail : Cadieux was illeterate ! He could not even sign his name on notary contracts.

According to Quebec's historian Benjamin Sulte, « La Complainte de Jean Cadieux » probably appeared into the french-canadian popular musical corpus in the 1840s. The first written version of « La Complainte de Jean Cadieux » was first published by Joseph-Charles Taché in Les Soirées Canadiennes in 1863, followed by the version Ernest Gagnon in Chansons populaires du Canada (1865). « La légende de Cadieux » was born.

http://legrenierdebibiane.com/trouvailles/legendes/cadieux/c...

Mehwatta is mentionned in the poem by Isabel Ecclestone MacKay « The Passing of Cadieux ». The poem was inspired by the death of Jean Cadieux at Portage des Sept-Chutes (Temiskaming) and his ode to a « slim Algonquin girl » named Mehwatta.

Isabel Ecclestone MacKay's poem was published in 1909 and reprinted in 1916 by John William Gavin in his anthology : Canadian Poets (Toronto : McClelland, Goodchild & Stewart Publishers, p. 237-246) :
http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/garvin/poets/mackay.h...

BTW : there is no such thing as an « Indian princess ». Royalty was an unknown concept to North American Natives.

I'm wondering if their last name is actually Cadieux?

The family consists of:
Antoine Cadies, age 46
Sophia, 45
Julia, 22
Antoine, 20
Lucy, 18
Phila, 14
Sophia, 12
Theresa, 10
Louisa, 6
Amelia, 5
Matilde, 2
Julia, 15

I can't find the family before or after 1850.

My father, Wilfrid Tetreault, born June 14, 1917, was your mother's brother. He passed away on March 7, 1983. My father married Gertrude Belisle and she is still living in Farnham and will be 87 in June. I have a sister Lise, and two brothers Normand and David. We grew up in Farnham and were close to all my dad's brothers and sisters. Aurore Jette, Yvonne Bolduc, Therese Roy, Berthe Laroche, and his brothers Maurice and Roland. I can tell you all about your cousins on your mother's side. I remember your parents coming down to visit in Farnham at Paul and Therese Roy's house and seeing some of their children - a girl called little Alice and a boy little Armand. Please e-mail me if you want more info.

Yes, they are the same family. I am researching Joseph Benjamin Cadieux from Muskegon. I have found info on your Joseph N. the doctor stating that they did move to New York. I believe I have something stating that their daughter was married there. If you are interested, please let me know and I will look for that article and post.
I have found the following information and would like confirmation that some or all of these are the same Joseph N. CADIEUX, as well as additional information about the family relationships in the 1860 and 1870 censuses:

1860, Troy, Rensselaer, NY
Joseph N. CADIEUX, 27, Canada, physician
Elizabeth, 16, VT
Leonore, 4, NY
Mary K. DAVEL, 21, NY
Florence DAVEL, 3/12, NY
[I am relatively sure that this was Elizabeth AUSTIN or OSTIGUY who remarried between 1860-1864 to Leander HILL, taking a dau Leonore CADIEUX with her. Who were the DAVEL's?]

1870, Syracuse, Onondaga, NY
Joseph CADIAX, 34, Canada, physician
Kattie, 21, NY, keeps house [thought might be Mary K. Davel, but age rules that out]
Joseph V., 5/12, NY
Florence E., 10, NY, at school [same Florence as in 1860? Was she adopted?]
Julia, 70, Canada, boarding [possibly mother?]

8 Jun 1880 Houston Ave, Muskegon 3rd ward, Muskegon, Mich
Joseph N. CADIEUX, 46, Can, Can, Can, physician
Janie, wife, 27, Scotland, Scot, Scot, keeping house
Florence, dau, 21, NY, Can, Scotland crossed out and New York written over it, at home [still same Florence?]
Victor, son, 9, NY, Can, Scot [Joseph V. of 1870?]
Clarence, son, 7, NY, Can, Scot
Elenore, dau, 11/12, Can, Can, Scot

16 Jun 1880, Western Ave, Muskegon 2nd Ward, Muskegon, Michigan
Joseph N. CADDOUX, 41, Can, Can, Can, physician
Jennie, wife, 27, Scot, Scot, Scot
Florenc E., dau, 20, NY, Can, NY
Victor C., son, 8, NY, Can, NY
Clarence W., son, 7, NY, Can, NY
Adell M., dau, 9/12, Can, Can, Scot.

Could these two 1880 families possibly be two different families? If the same, how account for discrepancies?

US IRS Assessment Lists have in 27th Collection District, Elmira, New York:
1865, Jos. N. Cadieux, phys. & surg.
1866, Joseph N. Cadieux, Physician & S.

Any insights would be appreciated.

My father, Marcel, had a sister, who died in Montreal in the late seventies (between 75 and 78). I was abroad most of my life at that time, so I never got to meet her before she died. I can find out more about her if you wish.

What are the exact titles to your three books which I shall eagerly attempt to consult if you can indicate a location (preferably in Montreal) where I may find them? I understand that you do not sell them. Is there any particular reason for this? (I ask without wanting to pry in any sens, but you have before you an eager potential customer).
My husband's ancestor, Peter CADUE, was a trader in the Kansas Territory in the 1850's. The Territorial Census of 1855 lists his origin as Michigan. He owned quite a lot of land in Kansas, and was considered wealthy. He married a Kickapoo Indian woman named Kishbe and had at least six children with her. Peter died in Chicago in November 1860 at about age 57. Any suggestions about where to find his parents or other family would be deeply appreciated.

This is a good and challenging puzzle.

The contradictory info could just be an error in transcription. The marriage "record" for Joseph N Cadieux and Jennie C Ellis is a transcription, the actual record isn't on-line. That might be something to look into, in your spare time ;).

Errors in the census records go without saying. We never know who delivered the info on behalf of the household, if the communication between the person giving the info and the census taker was clear, if the census taker understood info correctly and wrote what he heard. I'm betting the doctor was never around when the census taker visited and all info about him was recalled from the wife at the time.

I would definitely plot out all the locations you've found for JN Cadieux (and entourage) on a customized google map, I find it really helps to sort out where to look further.

JN Cadieux went to medical school somewhere, I would venture in either Albany or Buffalo. Maybe looking into when and where he graduated from, again in your spare time ;), will help put more of the pieces of the puzzle in perspective.

You seem to be hooked on this one, too! Thanks for your latest. The thought also occurred to me there were two "wives" in Troy. Maybe that's why Elizabeth and Lenore left?

It seems as if all of these are connected, but:
I had the Jennie Ellis marriage record, but some conflicts. Did Joseph move to Michigan by 1880, with a 27-yr-old Jennie/Janie, wife, in both 1880 entries (assumiing it's the same family) and then go back to New York to marry a 25-yr-old Jennie Ellis 2 yrs later in 1882? Also marr record has his age as 30 (1852); if true, he couldn't be the 27-yr-old father of Lenore (1856) in 1860 census.

And who is Adell M., 2/12, Can, Can, Scot in 2nd 1880 census, if Elenore, 11/12, Can, Can, Scot was dau of Jennie and Joseph in the 2nd 1880 census?

If they are all the same, I'm counting 4 marriages:
1) Elizabeth AUSTIN (Lenore) in Troy 1860;
2) Mary K. DAVEL (Florence Eva) in Troy 1860;
3) Kathaline WINSLOW (Victor C.) Kattie in Syracuse 1870;
4) Jennie ELLIS (Marie Eleonore) in Muskegon 2x 1880.

Thanks especially for the Canadian records--I don't have the World Ancestry, so couldn't access records from the index. I had found the WWI Reg. for Clarence, but since A.R. Porte didn't mean anything to me, didn't realize the connection.

Had not found Victor's wedding, but I agree, he's seems to fit.

Just in browsing around, I'm sure there was at least one other Joseph N. CADIEUX, physician. So are the ages way off, correspondence of children's names a coincidence, etc?
I'm just curious enough that when I have time--not for a week at least, I may try to get FHL marriage and/or baptismal records.
(This is an extension of a thread on the Guyette board:http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.guyette/335/mb.ashx)

Hi Pat,

Found some records for you that I think definitely relate. I think the plot is really thickening. The good doctor appears to have married 3 times. How is it possible in the 1860 Census, there 2 wives in the same household? There are certainly some skeletons in this story to dig up. I think a next move is to search church records in Troy, NY. There are quite a few choices of films you can order and view at your local FHC. See if you can find a bap record for Florence, that would confirm her parentage.

These marriages found on familysearch.org.

Groom's Name: Joseph N.
Just found these. Joseph W. in Arthur's birth record could be incorrect transcription of Joseph N as in birth record for other child but could be two different men. Maybe Dronin and Dreuiin are really different women?
1892 birthdate for Arthur instead of 1895 found in Draft Reg.; again a not unusual error in transcription. These would seem to identify Arthur's mother and tie the draft reg. to him. Question is whether it is the right Joseph N.
