There are several web-sites that claim to know the origins of some Surnames.. I will have a look for them, but it is probably a BIG job, and I only get two hours a-day on the library computers.. With defects & distractions, that is more like ONE hour..

. . . gOOgle: "Cadmus surname" ... "surname Cadmus" . . . various spellings of de Kyper, with & without space, etc..

I also have some-things on Paper, to look for again.. ALL of my "webtv.net" web-pages are Gone, murdered ... including all of my individual Dutch Family-named pages.. I am slowly re-constructing my G pages, as I find old paper sources.. IT will take Years-unknown..

I recovered some of my Mixed Dutch pages, and Dutch Sources pages.. Check Here:
http://gene-herbkingsland.angelfire.com/index.html . . . Look again, every few months..

Sometimes this message board cuts-off long URLs.. Try gOOgle, "Herb Kingsland"+2009 . . . click-ON any page listed, then click-on the word: Introduction

. . . OR "Herb Kingsland"+Cadmus . . . or Brouwer, Joralemon, Mey, etc.. But THAT will probably get you too many Old DeDD "webtv" pages..

Four minutes To GO . . .

I'll Be Back . . . HKgeney ... HxKings, herbkingsland1

o o o o o o

I believe it was Fredrickson(sen?) at one point , I think it also was shown at some point in new amsterdam as De Cuyper too I don't know if that was the man's title at that point or if it was considered a surname, but I have seen the name listed as that.
At one point the name was also Codmus listed in some records in New Jersey. Ms. Spears does a great job of double checking her history and I have read the family documentation she has gathered , and that is where I noticed the several different names all in the same line.

Re: How De Cuyper became Cadmus?

The Cadmus name was given when the Romans conquered the Germanic tribes. They gave then last names accouding to their occupations. Thus names like Carpenter, Shoemaker, etc. When they ran out of that type of name, they took names from mythology. Cadmus slew the dragon, sewed its teeth, and an army sprang up to conquer whoever they were trying to conquer. That is why a German has a Greek name. As far as the De Cuyper, it described the occupation in the 1600's. Thomas Fredrickson De kuyper Cadmus is Thomas, son of Frederick who was a cooper (a person who made barrels) Cadmus. Hope this helps.

Dear Depomedrol,

What you have said is totally incorrect.

ALL members of the Cadmus family are descended from the immigrant Thomas Frederickszen and his wife Marritje Adriaens of Amsterdam, North Holland. They immigrated to New Amsterdam sometime in 1650, and removed to northern New Jersey circa 1670. ALL members of the family practiced patronymics until about 1715, when they all adopted the Cadmus surname. Nothing coincided with the arrival of the British, which was much earlier than that. And no one anglicized anything.

The use of "de Kuyper" which was merely appended to the name of Thomas Frederickszen in the early records was because he had been a cooper (or cuyper) by trade while he lived in New Amsterdam. When he removed to New Jersey, he took up farming.

See the article that appeared in the New York Genealogical & Biographical 'Record' in July 2006, entitled "Thomas Frederickszen and Marritje Adriaens: Origins of the Cadmus Family in Amsterdam Revealed."

See the article by David M. Riker that appeared in the Nov 1985 issue of 'de Halve Maen' (Holland Society publication) entitled "The Genealogy of the Cadmus Family."

My grandmother was Irene Alice Matilda(Mathilda?)Cadmus. I have living relatives in Minnesota, however, we do not communicate, would like to know more about this side of my family. Where the name came from, just anything you would be willing to share. I do not know her parents names. But she had a few siblings, Hazel being one that I know for sure. Irene met my grandfather(Ira L."Bill" Giles) while visiting relatives in California and married him shortly after in San Francisco. She then returned to Minnesota homestead until his discharge from Army. He was from Amarillo, Texas and that is where they settled. Her father passed in the late 40's as mentioned in my grandfather's unfinished journal, and they went "home" for the funeral.
This is about all I know.
Please help--
Julie Giles Kempf

Carolyn,
George W. is not my direct ancestor but thanks for supplying the info. A decade ago, I spent a whirlwind afternoon at the Bloomfield Library and copied 10+ pgs of Cadmus family material. The articles were written in the early 1960's by historian Herbert A. Fisher for the local newspaper. The anecdotal info is interesting & I'd be glad to send it to you. I'm still a novice at family research and would appreciate a few suggestions as to avenues for further fact finding. Babs

I couln't find a son named George but that doesn't mean there isn't one. I found a grandson of Thomas Jr. who was called George W. He was born in 1839 and was a Civil War veteran. He married Leah Maria Van Riper and had two sons Hadley and Eugene. I don't know if this is the George you are looking for. I found a lot of information in books that were written on the history of the Bloomfield N.J. area. These books are available on line through the Heritage Quest computer program. My Great Aunt also told me that there is a huge collection of books on the same subject in the Bloomfield, N.J. Library if you are able to get there. I have more of Georges descendants if you would like the information. Best, Carolyn

Perhaps to angelicse their names? Several diferent people in New Jersey changed their name to Cadmus at about the same time. This coincided with the arrival in the area of British settlers. Unfortunately it makes it difficult to trace some of these people as they were all called Cadmus but not related at all.

According to History of Hudson County by Charles Winfield, William was born Feb. 6, 1831. He married Lavinia Van Buskirk, b. Feb. 23, 1834, died Dec. 3, 1852. His parents were Casparus Cadmus (b.1-13-1794) and Margaret Vreeland. She died Dec. 15, 1854. They married Dec. 17, 1817.
Casparus was son of Casparus (b. Aug. 16, 1770, d. Sept. 23, 1845) and Catlyntje Dodd, daughter of John Dodd. She was b. Jan 27, 1768, d. Oct. 11, 1822.

Casparus was son of Joris (d. April 2, 1781) and either Jannetje Vreeland or Jenneke Prior. Jenneke d. June 29, 1795.

Joris was son of Dirck Fredericksen, son of Fredrick who d. Nov. 8, 1745. and Jannetje Van Horn. Some of this is speculation.

I also have the Vreeland information - email me.

Marcelle1207@yahoo.com

My married name is Cadmus. the only thing I can think of is that Dutch settlers here often changed their names to Greek ones, as Erasmus changed his name provbably at the same time. I have no proof. It may have had something to do with the reason they came here--to excape religious persecution.

Richard Cadmus

I am trying to piece together my husband's family tree. Unfortunately, I have very little information to work with. I know that his great-grandfather was Richard Cadmus and he married Gertrude Daniel (1893-1986). He lived in NJ and died in St. Petersburg, FL. If anyone is familiar with this family, I would appreciate any information that you may be able to provide.
