Hi Mary,
I just started looking into the Cafferty/Sullivan/Wilcox/Erickson family history and came upon your post.

The information that I have is that Brian Cafferty came over from Cork, Ireland and Margaret Farrel followed a year later and they were married here in the states. The names of their children are the same as our family history. My grandmother was the daughter of Sabina, who died when my grandmother was around 5 years old. Sarah Teresa was the grandmother to Paddy and still lives in MN. One of the brothers has 2 grandchildren in Sandpoint, Idaho.
I have more information. It's been a few years so I'm not sure if you need it.

My great-grandfather told his daughter and granddaughters the same thing...the name used to be McCafferty!
I have a William Clark Cafferty in my records. Don't have the name of his wife or any details, but he was a brother to my 3rd (I think) great grandfather. This William Clark Cafferty was born in 1787 in N.J. It would seem that with a distinctive name, like William Clark Cafferty, if this is not your ancestor, he would certainly be related to this Cafferty famiy somehow. This family came from the east, and my branch settled in OH. before moving on west.

The Margaret M. Cafferty you referenced is my grandmother, (my father's mother). Actually her name is Marguerite, though it appears on some records as Margaret. She passed away in July 1980 in R.I. - I presently live in VA but my family still lives in R.I. - My father, Frederick Jr., was the only child of Marguerite and Frederick Walsh. Is Moran your married name?

What was your great grandmother's name? Hopefully we're talking about the correct John Cafferty. I have other questions - don't know much about John Cafferty.

It looks like your people were in the US pretty early. I doubt if my previous information will be helpful. However, if you haven't visited the LDS site, you are in for some treasure. There are records for both William and Thomas. I think if you sift through the records you will find some siblings for Thomas.

Re: Cafferty?

You'll need to find our where they came from in Ireland.
Helpful hints:
McCafferty seemed to be used by the Fermanagh and other northern county people more than in other areas. My Caffertys from Mayo tended to use Caffrey but one of the brothers in a US family used McCaffrey!!
The Irish tended to use a pattern when giving first names to their children. Both sets of my Irish Grandparents continued to follow the pattern in the the US after they emigrated, but this custom wasn't known by their children and it wasn't followed. I've noticed that none of my Irish cousins have continued. What you will find from this pattern is a repetion of names from generation to generation. Since families tended to intermarry, you will find common regional names. The first name Anthony is seldom found in Ireland, but in Mayo you will find every family with an Anthony!! The name Thomas is found, but I doubt if a William appeared until this generation (using Liam, of course).
Most of the Irish settled in towns with other families from their hometown in Ireland and with other family members. You might want to look in the area they first lived for similar names. Also check regional bulletin boards for contacts. There are many private and public sites devoted to regional genealogy.
Good luck.
