Don R. "Rick" Cage [Cumberland]

CUMBERLAND - Don Richard "Rick" Cage, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2008, in Costa Rica.

Born June 12, 1947, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Jack D. Cage Sr. and Mary Margaret (Easton) Cage Grimes. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Jack D. Cage Jr.; and his stepfather, James J. Grimes.

Ricky will be remembered as coach by his former players on the Centre Street Playground Basketball team. He also played on Zion Reformed Basketball team. He had a reputation for being an outstanding player.

After graduation from Centre Street Elementary School, he entered Allegany High School where he continued his love of sports, especially basketball. He graduated in 1965.

A Vietnam War veteran, he entered the United States Army in February 1966 at Fort Benning, Ga. He was selected as a Distinguished Trooper of the 82nd, Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C. He was sent to Vietnam in September 1966, where he was assigned to Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion of the 101st, Airborne Division's 327th Artillery. After six years in the Army and two tours of duty in Vietnam, he returned home to Cumberland. Shortly thereafter, Rick continued his education at the Allegany Community College where he was active in the Student Government Association, and also attended Frostburg State University. He also became a member of the Cumberland Jaycees. He was employed by Burton's.

Later years found him at Marvin's Floor Center, then Hunter Douglas. He relocated to Baltimore where he opened his own business. He returned to Cumberland in 1994, and lived here until 2000 at which time he moved to Florida to be near his sister and her family.

Rick had always enjoyed sports, following all his favorite teams. He was an avid reader, especially enjoying topics on history, religion and sports. He loved animals, nature, flowers, trees, the mountains and camping. He leaves behind his two-year-old boxer, Slick.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches where he had served on the Administrative Council as Chairperson on Missions. He was a life member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 172 in Cumberland.

Surviving are his wife, Carmen L.; one sister, Patricia Cage Reneau, West Palm Beach, Fla.; one brother, Philip T. Cage, LaVale; his loving godson, Cristian Reneau; loving niece, Brittni Reneau; loving nephew, Max Reneau, all who adored their Uncle Rick; aunts, Juanita Delaney, Greenbelt, Louella Winstanley, LaVale; "special son," Carson Rinehart, Cumberland; "Vietnam brother," Jack Crookshank, Delaware; Rick's children, Don, Carmen, Scott and Jay. He was also survived by his cousins, Skip Cramer, J. William Easton and Wade Easton, all of Cumberland, Barbara Franke, Annapolis, and Tom Delaney, Bowie; nephew, Leonard Cage, Cumberland; nieces, Jessica Cage, Dawn Cage-Bollin, Katherine Burns and Lisa Cohen; and 14 great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (scarpellifh.com) on Saturday, July 12, 2008, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Lowell Garland officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 172 Color Guard.
