Inexperienced - Seeking help tracing Cagney-Casey line

I'm just starting on my journey re-tracing my ancestry back through my mother's side. I have never done this before and would greatly appreciate any general OR more specific pointers! The concrete information that i have is this:

My great-grandfather, Patrick J. Cagney, was born in 1888 in "Northern Ireland" according to the 1930 census. There is a conflict between the 1920 census which lists him as arriving in New York City in 1907 and the 1930 census which lists him as arriving in 1910. Likewise, my great-grandmother, Catherine Casey, was born in 1892 in "Northern Ireland" according to the 1930 census. Similarly, she has conflicting dates of arrival between the 1920 and 1930 census. It makes trying to trace either of them back to Ireland very difficult. Is this typical?

Also, I am unable to find any record of their time in New York City, from approximately 1907-1920. During this time, they had four daughters (my great aunts): Josephine, Catherine, Eileen, and Margaret. When they moved to Cheltenham Twp., Montgomery County, PA in 1920, the census records pick up.

Where should I be checking? Any resources to share? Who should I contact? Is this going to be impossible? Haha!
