Julia married Gilbert Covey,1845, St. Michel, Yamaska, PQ.
They appear in 1870 Federal Census, of Lawrence,Massachusetts. Gilbert died 1885-87. Julia died sometime between 1900-1910, in Methuen, MA. I assume. Still checking on that. No records at state level on Julia's death.

Hi, yes Julia Anne Cayer married Gilbert Covey in 1845. Had 10 children 5 survived. They lived in Stanstead, P.Q., Canada. Moved to Methuen, MA., in 1868. Gilbert died in 1887. Not, sure when Julia Anne died, but it was after 1900.

I have done a fair amount of research on descendants of this line. My great-grandmother was Celina Riel (aka Celina Riley). I have noted that some family trees show that Charlotte Caille died in 1905 in Oxford. This is incorrect. She died 3/11/1901 in Templeton, Worcester County, Massachusetts. She was living with her daughter Marie (Mrs. John Sharron). Another daughter, Pauline, was living with them too. She died 2/11/1906, also in Templeton. I have verified this information with NEHGS' Massachusetts Vital Records, 1841-1910.

Re: David Cale (Caille?) 1716-1786

By a complex method of statistical analysis, I may have traced one CAILLE family's origins to one of three villages in the Department of Nord, France: Gonnelieu, Banteux, and Troisville. CAILLE birth rates in these villages ranged from about 1,200 to 3,200 per 10,000 in the 1891-1915 period (the earliest for which I could get data). These are significantly higher rates than in other towns.

All are small; the largest had a recent population of 743. and they are within 20 kilometers of each other; Banteux & Gonnelieu are only 2-3 km. apart. Gonnelieu, the samllest with 280 people, may be the oldest; the satellite view shows a circular, walled town surrounded by fields.

The name may be of occupational origin, caille being the past participle of the Fench verb of curdle -- the first step in making cheese.

If you are interested in the methodology or supporting data, please reply.

David Cale (Caille?) 1716-1786

I am looking for the origins of a man whose name was spelled so variously that its origin is lost. It is, however, consistently pronounced as "CALE" which I think is consistent with the French "CAILLE".

He sailed from Rotterdam to Philadephia in 1742 and his age was given as 26, yielding an estimated birth year of 1716. He stated in a 1754 naturalizatin petition that he was born in the Palatinate, but the surname (by any spelling) is rare in Germany. This leads me to look to France for the origin of his family.

At www.geopatronyme.com, we see CAILLE births mostly in the Department of Nord (on the Belgian border) and almost as many in Vendee.

I would be appreciative of any suggestions as to how to refine my research.
Thank you.

They were also known as names, and the records could be in either name so you must search all variations.

I was wondering if Caille is the same as Lacaille. My great great grandfather was Isadore Lacoy/Lacaille(Sayer) He was born in Lower Canada in 1799. This is all the information I have on him. No parents. He died in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. 1879. A hunch tells me that he may have come from Lapraire, PQ. but its just a hunch. Can any of you experienced researchers help me. I have been looking for 30 years. He worked for the Minnesota Fur Trade Co. in the 1820's here in the US then settled in Chippewa Co. Sault, Michigan (Sugar Island).
