CAIRNCROSS, Ernest and Winifred Mabel

Can anyone help with information regarding Winifred Mabel DANCER (b Leamington Spa 5.10.1894) who married Ernest CAIRNCROSS (b Gateshead 6.4.1891) in Gloucester on 23.3.1918, please?
Winifred Mabel is the hitherto unknown sister of my grandmother, Nellie Gertrude DANCER.
Ernest served in Palestine in the early 1920s and I believe the family returned to the UK in mid/late 1920s.
Really keen to hear from direct decendants or anyone with information and especially a photograph of Winifred Mabel.

Would you be willing to send by snail mail a copy of his diary?? My GGGgrandfather was born in Scotland (exactly ?) I do know that William Cairncross came to canada on board a ship ( he worked on it.) and eventually came to the U.S.

My mother is a Cairncross. Her Grandfather was born in Broughty Ferry. His great, great grandfather was born in Forfourshire in 1760. I have a copy of his diary of growing up in Scotland and his boat ride to the U.S. Please contct me with anything you have. Thanks.

Hi, Just came across your message so I thought I would reply because I am related to a Cairncross. My fathers mother was a Joan Cairncross from Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland. He was a manufacturer and seller of lemonade. Try looking in www.home.freeuk.com/iancx for more info. Or just type cairncross into google. Thats what I done.

Stewart Cairncross: born in Scotland
Alcie Blair Cairncross: born 1841 in Ohio

1881: Spring, located in Grafton on the advice of his friend James J. Hill; about 40 years of age; purchased one of the first lots on the platted townsite; erected a store building on northwest corner of Hill Avenue and Fifth Street; freighted merchandise by teams and wagons from boats docked at Acton.

1881: August, Mrs Cairncross arrived with their five children. Their conveyance from Grand Forks an open lumber wagon; gave birth next day to first white child born in Grafton, a boy named Grafton Cairncross.

1882: Purchased lots 1, 2, 3, Block 10 original townsite and built a home. Lived there for 33 years, on the SW corner of Griggs and Fourth.

1883: Retired from the dry goods business.

1914: Mrs Cairncross died at age 73 years.

1915: Home site sold.

1918: Mr Caircross died in Grafton.

Descendants include a daughter, Alice, who married William Graham, son of Dr. W.J. Graham, who came here in 1884 and established a general practice in connection with the Elephant Drug Store owned by Otto Krogstad. Daughter, Jessie, who married Fred Walston and lived in Park River. Their daughter Priscilla, married J.C. Overbye, a longtime automobile dealer in Grafton.

I too am a descendant of David Cairncross. He was my GGGGGrandfather. I have the answers to the questions you are looking for. I can send you copies of the info that I have found. This past Memorial day weekend I found his grave along with his wife, Nancy and some of their children. I also have photos. E-mail me if you would like for me to share what I have. Have you lost track of a George Cairncross? He married my my ancestor Eliza Sarah RICHMOND nee DYER 1862 at Ballarat Victoria where he was a draper.
He led and interesting life... after getting his wife's eldest son Henry James RICHMOND back to Australia from grandmother in England he went gold prospecting on the West Coast of New Zealand 3 yrs, then became a publican in Hexham Victoria where he died after a childless marriage, in 1872 .

He was known to her in-laws in Essex.

I have managed to trace his parents and grandparents, but would love to connect with anyone who is a related to this family. David's parents were David Cairncross and Annie Munroe and his grandparents were John Cairncross and Helen Lousen.

Is that Montrose in the Angus District of Scotland north of Edinburgh and Dundee? I was there two years ago and found at least 5 Cairncross families in the phone book, but was unable to make contact with them.

Hi, I am from Northern New York. While working on my family history I came upon a name that I did not know about. The name is Carncross or Carincross and the people were from Russell, NY 13684. This family name appears to have died out in this area but was present in the early 1900's. Hope it helps. Carole Davis

My Cairncrosses left Scotland (possibly the Angus area around Montrose) in the mid 1850's and
immigrated to Keighley, Yorkshire, England where my GrGrandfather Albert was born.
He then moved to Leeds, Yorkshire, England where my Grandfather Albert was born.
The whole family immigrated to the Buffalo NY USA area about the 1920's.
Several members of the family are still in the area.
Contact me in you find any similarities in your family tree.

I'm also working on this line, especially NY State. Ours came from Germany in 1754/55 to Albany NY and spread from there down Mohawk Valley, to Jefferson County in northern NY, to Madison County NY and Chenango County NY and another branch to Cayuga County NY, then many westward. John Carncross / Carncrose b. 9 September 1797 - d. 27/?29 Jan. 1844 aged 46 yr 4 mo.
m. Jan 1820, St. John's Episcopal Church, Johnstown NY to
Isabella (Sibilla, Sybell) Van Brocklin b. 15 April 1800 - d. 2 June 1874.
Moved to Town of Wilna, Jefferson County NY about 1813. Both buried Sand Hill Cemetery there. [John's father was probably Lewis (Ludwig) Gerngross / Carncross: here the lineage and relationship to Philip Jacob Gerngross / Carncross' family (see below) gets a little ambiguous - I'm working on this.]

John & Isabella's children included: ELIZA JANE (see below), Lewis b. 1823, Alexander b. 1825, James Henry b. 1827, Levi b. 1829, Sary Ann b. 1831 d 1832, unnamed twins b & d 1834, Melissa b. 1837, Barbara Maria b. 1839.

ELIZA JANE CARNCROSS / CARNCROSE b. 29 November 1821 m. JACOB CARNCROSS in 1840. [In 1850 census, Town of Wilna - she age 31, he age 49]
Children included Mary b. 1844 & JOHN b 1847.
JOHN married JULIA ______ ; their daughter is MATIE CARNCROSS /CAIRNCROSS

JACOB CARNCROSS who married ELIZA JANE (above) was the son of
Philip Jacob Carncross (Jr.) b. circa 1770-1772 - d.15 May 1837 who
m. Catrena (Catherine) Shourman (Showerman).
Philip & family lived in Montgomery County NY areas and moved to Town of Wilna, Jefferson County NY after 1825.
His father was Philip Jacob Gerngross / Carncross (sometimes given as just Jacob) b. 27 June 1744 at Steinheim am Murr (Germany) who emigrated with his parents to Albsny New York 1754/55.
[Much of above information from work of S.D. Reed, mimeo, 1984 who noted 47 spellings of the name in records!!]

I'd be happy to share with you whatever I know. Matie Cairncross married Frank Lewis, I don't know when, their daughter, Ethel Lewis, was born June 20, 1902 in Natural Bridge, NY. She married Frank Joseph St. Peter, born on Aug 4, 1902 in New York, (town unknown). Ethel died on March 19, 1963 in Hull, MA and Joseph died December 2, 1986 in Hull, MA. One of their son's was Neil F. St. Peter Sr., born Jan. 4, 1938 in New York, he was my husband's father. My husband, DuWayne St. Peter was Neil's second son, born March 15, 1961, his mother is Mary Hunter.
If you can share with me some of the dates of Matie Cairncross's ancestors, (if you have them), I would be very grateful, our search so far has been unsuccessful.

Karin, I have a chart on ancestors of Matie Cairncross. Her grandparents were both Carncross - who married each other: Jacob Carncross & Eliza Jane Carncross [ also spelled Carncrose ]. This group is originally from Germany [as Gerngross in the 1700's] - not Scotland. There is a large "nest" in Jefferson County NY around Natural Bridge. Hi!! I am a descendent of David Cairncross. I believe we came from Forfarshire Scotland. It seems my family shortened our name to Cross at some time but I am not sure when.I was also told of a military incident involving a general's (?) daughter <which is supposedly the reason for the name change> I am not sure if this is true or not. Hi Kim, my name is Sarah Cairncross, I have two older sisters, Nicola and Heather, and a younger brother Alex.

Our father is Sandy (Alexander) Cairncross and his father was James Cairncross, married to Mary. They lived in Montrose, Scotland. We all now live in East/West Sussex.

My dad has two sisters, Norma and Irene. Irene lives in Brechin with her husband and Norma in Wales with her husband.
