As I understand the history of the house, the turret was built to connect two existing buildings. The vat was placed in the central location and collected rain water via a pipe from the gutter surrounding the turret. The vat had a cut-off float much like we use in today's flush toilets to keep it from overflowing. It also had an outflow pipe that originally fed the water to fixtures in the house. When I saw it in place, the outflow pipe had already been disconnected from the modern internal plumbing.

I'm sorry that your husband's great grandfather's pencil signature on the vat has weathered away. If I find the original photos of the signature I'll post them.

I've not yet re-located the original photos, so I dropped by today and took new ones. Unfortunately, four years ago the vat was taken out of the turret attic where it was in pristine condition and placed outside where it has been used as a planter. It has deteriorated and the shiny copper plate is now green. Here are the new photos showing the vat and the Baltimore Cooperage copper plate. The home is a convent for an order o nuns who run the St Joseph Nursing Home on the premises. The vat was in the upper level of the tower in the photo.
I'd be interested in seeing the photos. Robert Milton Cairnes was my husband's great-grandfather. His mother was born at 109 Ingleside Avenue and the home is still in the family. Before the "shop" was on Bloomsbury, it occupied the building where Catonsville Gourmet is located.

Robert M. Cairnes, Catonsville MD, circa 1920.

While helping renovate a friend's circa 1880s home we discovered a large oak vat in the attic that once collected rain water and supplied it to the rest of the house though lead pipes. The vat has a brass plate indicating it was built by the Baltimore Coorperage Company. Handwritten on the outside of the staves is "Built by R.M. Cairnes, Catonsville MD. Plumber and Gasfitter, Bloomsbury Avenue." I found a Robert M. Cairnes in the 1920 census of Catonsville living with his family at 109 Ingleside. He was a plumber, so was most likely the man who installed the vat about 1908. The vat will most likely be sold to an antiques dealer, but I've got photos that I'll send to anyone who is intersted.

For anyone reading this thread with any interest, Chris Gelo and I have been in contact (as well as the rest of he family!) and it has been established that she and her siblings are cousins to my motherm as Chris Gelo's mother and my grandmother were sisters - that would make Chris and I 1st cousins, once removed. (according to the kinship report in Family Tree Maker) I still have a ton of info to verify and add to my rather huge file, but eventually I plan to upload all of it to the World tree.

Hi Steve,

Your William's brother James was my g-g-grandfather and I have some info back to their Grandfather William in Ireland, (not much more than name, I'm afraid) and forward from James. The first thing I would suggest is checking the World Tree, as that is where I first found all of my info. Ruth Whetnall has an extensive listing of the Caines' as they also fit into her family tree. Start your search simply for William Cairnes. (I found it by searching for my grandmother, Frances Cairnes)

Do you have any further info on Anna Kilpatrick?

Hi Christine. I am Christine (Dorsett) Gelo and I am James Arnold's sister. Our mother's name was Margaret Vivian (Cairnes) Dorsett...wife of Fred Carl Dorsett....daughter of Edwin Cairnes and Mary E. Kennedy. She had an older sister...Frances (Cairnes) Roach..wife of Jimmy Roach. She also had a brother that we only knew as "Buddy" Cairnes who was killed in WWII.
She had 15 children....Raymond Lester, Mary Ellen, Margaret Catherine, Harold Norman, Freida, Donald Richard, Edward, Robert Carl, Phyllis Marie, James Arnold, Alan Wayne, Charlotte Jean, Judy Nadine, Christine Lee, and Olive Kay.
Our mother was born in Wisconsin on July 29, 1908 and died July 1, 1964 in Flat Rock, IN. She was buried in Shelby Co., Indiana.
My sister, Kay, has done some research and believes that she has found the connection to the Mass. Kennedy's; however, I do not have that information. I will ask her to check this message from you and add her information for you.
Could you please send any information that you have to me or preferably to Kay (circlek@prodigy.net) [since she has been researching the Cairnes side of our family]. Like...how distantly are we possibly related? We would appreciate any help you could give us. Thank you!

But, whether she was related to the Massachusets Kennedys I have no idea.

Can you provide a bit more info on your Cairnes-Kennedy connection? Such as who was the Cairnes and where did the Kennedy fit in? If it's Edwin Cairnes and Mary E. Kennedy, then we may be distantly related.

I tried to e-mail you direct but it was returned so I will have to wait for you to pick this up. Elliot's father was Henry Moore (George) Cairnes and his mother was Emily Beresford so I think we are on the same line. E-mail me direct for full details.
Ruth

My great-great grandfather, James Cairnes, was the son of William Cairnes. James emigrated to New Brunswick, Canada, where three separate Cairnes families settlled in Albert County, they called New Iireland. James emigrated to Canada in 1819. He is listed in the 1851 census as a farmer, age 40. His wife's name was Anna Mariah (surname unknown but thought to be Kilpatrick), who emigrated in 1821. They had children: Susan, Mary E., Nathaniel, William (my grand-
father), James and Jane, all born between 1838 and 1850.
James Sr., was the son of William and were flax farmers in County Cork, Ireland according to my grandmother's recollection. My grandfather, William Cairnes, son of James,
married Violet Elizabeth Alcorn, daughter of Hugh and Bridgett Alcorn. Hugh emigrated to Canada in 1826.

To list: James Cairnes, b. abt. 1811 in Ireland
d. on 12-05-1898 in Town of Edson, Chippewa
County, Wisconsin...was a widower (wife: Anna
Mariah Kilpatrick);
William Cairnes, b. 8-25-1844
d. 8-30-1900 in Rhinelander, Wisconsin
his widow was Violet Elizabeth Alcorn, b. 12-12-1848
d. 3-19-1828 in Rhinelander, Wisconsin and both are
buried there.

I think some of the confusion is listing West Londonderry as a birthplace instead of the port from which they sailed to Canada. I have been researching them for over two years and am about ready to subscribe to Ancestry's UK forum. I have so many ancestors who emigrated from Ireland, Scotland and England to Canada that I wanted to have as much info as possible prior to beginning my search there. I have found two Cairnes cousins in my search, one the great-
granddaughter of James, Jr. and the other the great-granddaughter of Thomas Alcorn, who married a Cairnes girl.
I would certainly appreciate any info you are able to acquire and share through your brother's trip and I thank you for your inquiry.

Jacqueline

The name Cairnes is not the same line as Cairns. The name is also spelled Kairnes. I have been able to trace the family name back into Scotland in 1400. The spelling is correct and is different. Carnes is another name no family ties that we know of. The family comes from the north of Southern Ireland and left for Australia.

The later William had a sister Caroline born in NYC 1855 and that is the earlist date I have of them being in the USA. We believe this line of Cairnes came to NY where as others went to Quebec. I am aware of another line from the Lettery parish John Cairnes and wife Jane whose children were Racheal, Mary, David, Joe and Thomas.
My maiden name is Cairnes....and although my parents say our ancestors came from Ireland - I have often seen it listed as a Scottish name. I often see the name spelled Cairns...but you spell it the same way we do. I don't know much about my Great Grandparents...except that they lived in Philadelphia in the early 1900's (they were Irish and evidently drank too much). My grandmother married Matthew Cairnes in Philadelphia in the late 1920's.

Good luck in your search!
