Jean Calais was born in France. He married Elizabeth
McCoy (McCay). It is believed that Jean came from France in 1685 to escape the persecution
of the Huguenots. Settled in Virginia - Norfolk or
Portsmouth.

"Born in Montgomery County and resided in Cumberland County where he was by occupation, a farmer prior to enlisting
in Cumberland County at age 56., August 24, 1961 (wonder if he lied about his age?).
Present or accounted for through March 13, 1862. Company records indicate that he was
captured at New Bern on March 14, 1862; however, records of the Federal Provost Marshal do not substantiate that report.
Reported absent sick in November-December 1862. Discharged on February 28, 1863 by reason of disability."

John Dudley Calais married Sarah Hill Mitchell on June 7, 1845, she was dau of william Mitchell and Sarah Hill.
Their children: Martha Davis Calais (b. September 29, 1861, d. August 4, 1931 in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, NC),
Charles Henry Calais (b. November 2, 1854), Florence Cornelia Calais (b. December 6, 1847, d. 1880 in Fayetteville,
Cumberland County, NC), Thomas M. Calais (b. 1856 - he was a master machinist in Florence SC by the time his mother
died), Harvey W. Calais (b. 1852 - Harvey was a "leading druggist of Mobile, Alabama" when his mother died. He had
four children.), William Gaston Calais (b. June 28, 1846), and Sarah Calais.
Martha Davis Calais married John Chisholm Vann in 1883 in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, NC.
