POW/MIA Korean War CALAWAY

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Brown County, Illinois as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: WILLIAM EDWARD CALAWAY
Born: September 19, 1929 Caucasian
Date of loss: July 16, 1950 POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The Calaway family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (78 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Hi George:

There is book you will want to look for:

"Descendants of the Connecticut Calaways and Family Album," by Merle Leland Calaway.
http://worldcat.org/search?qt=worldcat_org_all&q=%22Desc...

There is extensive information about the family and a good number of photographs, if I remember correctly. I don't have a copy of the book, but have spent a little time reading it in the library as Aralzaman's son, Darwin, is my ggg-grandfather. I have very, very little information on Darwin, and neither, sadly, does the book. I'll take a look through the information I've gathered, though, and get back with you.

You might also want to search the RootsWeb World Connect website. I know there are more than a few entries for this family there - you might want to contact the submitters for more information.
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi

I'd love to chat more with you, if you wouldn't mind emailing me directly:

Connie
swmigen@gmail.com

Aralzaman, Ph[o]ebe Calaway, Austinburg, OH

I have recently purchased the house owned by Aralzaman and Ph[o]ebe Calaway between 1880 and 1900, in Austinburg, Ohio. I've pretty well established that the house was built in 1879, and they bought it from the builder in 1880, when the property records show that he sold 100 ac in the township and bought this half-acre piece in the village. Aralzaman would have been 79 at this point, Ph[o]ebe 38 or 39 and as the unmarried youngest child, probably keeping house for him.
I'd be very interested in information about the family, and in particular photos of father and daughter.

CALWAY, Georgia Ann m. WHITE, thomas clifford

Chad-

I am reasearching Thomas Clifford White (b. about 1857; Hall County, GA). He married Georgia A. Calaway 17 Feb 1881 in Gwinnett & had 3 children Cora in 1882(my g-g-grandmother); Nancy Victoria in 1885 and Burl Shelton (unknown DOB). My prelimenary research leads me to believe he was the son of Butler White (b.1807-1817; NC) & Nancy Compton (b. abt 1814 in SC).

According to my research, Thomas Clifford White's brothers and sisters would have been Garrison L. White, Tina White, Lucinda White, and more brothers named only as initials, JH, JR & GB. (all born 1837-1854 in/around Hall Co., GA.) Does any of this fit in with your Whites that you're researching?

Thanks-
Bonnie N
Gwinnett County
Susan Calaway - Edw C Stefler m. 1-31-1861 Hancock Co. IL

Marriage license #797, Hancock County, IL, was issued to Susan Calaway and Edward C. Stefler on Jan 31, 1861, and they were married on the same day.

According to our family history, they were the parents of twin sons when Ed volunteered for military service. Susan took the young boys and went to live with her father while awaiting her husband's return. Ed was wounded, hospitalized, and died of gangrene. Susan and the boys subsequently went with her father to Indian Territory and knowledge of them was lost to our family.

Other than their marriage license, I've not been able to find any other reference to either Susan or Ed. There has been speculation that the name Stefler was mispelled on the marriage license.

Any information will be helpful.
Calaway families of Georgia, USA--1800S

I am searching for the parents/family of Susan Elizabeth Stanton Calaway, b. early 1800s, md in 1845 in Fayette County, Georgia to James G. (Gilford) Floyd. I do not know if her maiden name is Stanton or Calaway. On the marriage certificate, she is listed as Susan Stanton Calaway (may be various spellings of Callaway, Calloway, etc. in some records). Calaway appears to be the most frequent spelling. There are others of this surname located in Henry County, Georgia who may be related (think it was a shared county before the 2 counties were formed). Can anyone help me with this 30 year old mystery? All help much appreciated.

Your Calaway Ancestors in Ohio

Fred S. Clark, born 1/25/1864 and died 2/15/1937, is buried in Saybrook Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio. He indeed married Myrtle Calaway, daughter of Clara Davidson (sometimes spelled Davison) and Rufus Calaway, my great-great grandfather. Myrtle's son Harry Rufus Clark married Pearl Charlotte Lystrom. Their daughter Arlene May Clark married Harold Frank Scott. Their daughter Charlene Lanette Scott married Benson Burr Wise. They had a son, Dennis Kip Wise. That's as far as I can go in that direction.
Rufus Calaway was one of the 10 children of Aralzaman Calaway (spelled Aralzaman). Some early census records for Ashtabula County show his name spelled "Callaway", but somehow one L was later dropped.
Aralzaman was born in 1801 in New Haven, Connecticut, the son of William A. Callaway and Sarah Collier. William and Sarah were married Dec. 27, 1792, in the First Congregational Church at New Hartford, Litchfield County, Conn.

It is not known how man children William and Sarah had, but Aralzaman and his older brother James came to Ashtabula County around 1821, and settled in Austinburg Township. Aralzaman married Hannah Hoskins. he lived to be 92, dying in 1893 at his home on Maple Street in Austinburg.
I haven't yet done further research on William, father of Aralzaman. I've seen a record online at the LDS web site that says he was born in 1770 in Connecticut, which would be about right if he married in 1792. But an old family story has it that William was born in England and was sent to the colonies as a young man to fight the American colonists during the Revolution. Supposedly William "changed sides" and enlisted in the Colonial militia after he arrived here. So, I hope to find out what is truth and what is legend. In any event, all of the Callaways, Calloways and Calaways came to this country from England.

Be glad to provide more info on request. I grew up in Ashtabula County but now live elsewhere.

She died in Marshall Co., AL in 1889 and is buried at Beulah Baptist Cemetery in Boaz next to James and his first wife, Elizabeth Roads Dyer Floyd.

I would appreciate any help. From land records, I find 3 Calaway men who bought land in the same vicinity of Jackson County Alabama where Joseph's father, Hardy Doyal had land. Our Joseph had a brother named Edward Clark Doyal. we have "assumed" that the mother's maiden name was Clark, but it could just as well have been Calaway. On census records, her sons say she was born in Kentucky. Mary or Nancy is the first name of the mother and she would have married Hardy Doyal about 1821. Any takers? JPark

Did you ever receive any follow up on this? Thanks.
Nancy

My husband is also a Calaway. He is descended from one of Aralzaman sons. I think he had a son named Alfred? My mother-n-law has a book on the calaway's. There is also a book in a public libray in Ohio that has all the calaway information. The Calaway clan came to America from Ireland, not England and lived in Conneticut for quite some time then came to Ohio and founded Autinburg, Ohio. The house that Arizalman lived in is still there. You said you are descended from Rufus. I know where he is buried. The is a cemetary called Gageville Cemetary in Kingsville, Ohio. I'll write more when I get some more information.

Cindy

I have the book in front of me now. It is called Descendants of the "Connecticuit Calaways" by Merle Leland Calaway. I borrowed it from my mother-n-law to scan it so we could have a copy. My husband is related to Lewis and Sylvia. They had 12 children. Alfred was one of them. He married Grace Emma Northrup and had four children. Edith, Arthur, Florence and Raymond Frederick who was my husbands grandfather. Raymond married Elizabeth Wiker and had twelve children. Raymond, Jack, Ralph, Betty June, Ruth, Arthur, Margorie, Edith, Nancy. Carol, Russell, and Paul. My husband is Dan and his dad is Ralph. I understand from my husband that when England was fighting in one of the wars they had asked Ireland for helped and alot of them went to fight for the British so I think that's where the British origin came in. I hope that helps a little. Please let me know if you need anything else.

Cindy

My inlaws have a book about the Calaway's. Aralzaman was born in 1801 in New Haven Connecticut and moved to Austinburg when he was a young man. He married Hannah Hoskins and they had ten children:Carmi, Jeanette, Charles, Darwin, Rufus, Lewis, William, Alonzo, Sarah, and Pheobe. His house is on Maple Street in Austinburg, it is right across the street from a church, I can't remember what the name of it is though. There is also a copy of the book called Descendants of the "Connecticut Calaway's" and Family Album in the Geneva Public Library. I hope this helps, let me know if you need anything more.

Cindy
