Charlene,
The James Kenneth Calder McGuire I know about was born on March 27, 1859 un Queensferry, West Lothian, Scotland to Danel McGuire and Catherine Calder. They immigrated to the U.S and settled in Mass.
My grandfather was Colin Calder McGuire, James' brother, born in 1871 in Mass. Daniel Mcguire was a stone mason. I think Daniel may be your great grandfather.

Re: Calder family in Invernesshire Scotland

Irene,
I am having a problem sending to your email address so I'll send my reply through this site. Try contacting me at my email address below.
Thanks!

John

I have been researching the various Calder families who resided in Ontario during the 1800's. It's through that research that I came across your family in Elora. Although I am not connected to your Calders (at least not in the last 200 years) I would be interested in exchanging information about their family history!
I have attached information that details everything I know (or think I know) about John & Christian. I've had no serious problems tracing most of their daughters, but several of the sons seem to disappear in about the 1860's or '70's. Can you fill me in on any of the details in the later lives of these 3 sons? I am especially interested in events involving the lives of their sons, Alexander, John & William. Thanks!
George Alexander Calder, a descendant, is also involved in tracing your Calders. I haven't been in touch with him in several years, but you may still be able to contact him through this website where he has a posting:
http://members.optushome.com.au/pcalder/calder/calres2.htm

I hope to hear from you again!

Regards,

John
email: calderjb@golden.net

2-2	John Calder
Born: May 9, 1807.
Cuminestown, Monquhitter, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Christened on May 15, 1807 in Monquhitter, Aberdeenshire.
Died: September 3, 1894.
Ontario, Canada.
Buried at: Belsyde Cemetery (sect. B3/4B 3 1), Thistle Avenue, Fergus, Ontario.
Headstone Inscription: John Calder / May 9, 1807, / Sept. 3, 1894 / His Wife / Christian Webster / Sept. 10, 1808, / Dec. 17, 1876 / CALDER
Married to: Christian Webster.
April 6, 1830 in Old Meldrum, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Profession: - Weaver in the 1851, ‘71, ‘81 & ‘91 censuses.
- Freeholder (landowner) in the Wellington County Directory 1871-2.
Place of Residence: - Halifax, Nova Scotia for their first year in Canada, before moving to Ontario.
- Bon-Accord settlement (later named Elora), Upper Nichol Township in February / 1837.
- Lot 11, Con. 13, Nichol Twp. on the November 20, 1838 birth record of his son, Alexander.
- Lot 12, Con. 12, Nichol Township on the birth records of all his children from November 20, 1838 to April 2, 1852.
- Nichol Township, Wellington County in the 1851 Ontario census.
- Wellington County in the 1871 census.
- Con. 1, West Garafraxa Twp., Wellington County in the Wellington County Directory 1871-2.
Immigration Record: Based on the census records of his four eldest daughters it appears that the family immigrated to Canada in the time between the births of, Christina and Mary Ann. This makes the date sometime between October 25, 1834 and December 16, 1836.
- They arrived in Nichol Township in 1835.
Notes: - John and his wife Christian were 2 of the 9 founding members of Knox Presbyterian Church in Elora, Ontario. They figure prominently in the early history of this church.
- His religious denomination is recorded as being Plymouth Brethren in the 1871 census, and Bretheren in the 1881 census.
- Another researcher records that John, may have had a son named Paul, born about 1838. I have found no records of him and think that this event is unlikely and requires verification.
Documentation: - GRO(S) - christening record, Year 1807, Monquhitter, Code: 223/2.
Ontario Census Returns - 1851 - Wellington County, Enumeration District ?, Nichol Township, Page 69/35, Line 48.
- 1861 - Wellington County, Enumeration District 1, Garafraxa Township, Page 46, Line 3.
- 1871 - Wellington Centre, District 34, Sub District G, West Garafraxa Township, Division 1, Page 38, Line 4.
- 1881 - Wellington Centre, District 152, Sub District H, West Garafraxa Twp., Division 1,Page 68, Line 7.
- 1891 - Wellington Centre, District 125, Sub District G, Division 2, Nichol Township, Page 11, Line 14.
History of Knox Presbyterian Church, Elora, 1837 - 1987 by Knox Church Historical Committee.
The Province of Ontario Gazetteer and Directory 1869, page 154 (requires verification).
Gazetteer and Directory of the County of Wellington for 1871 - 2, pg. 183; reprinted in 1976.
“Fergus” by A.E.
Hello John,
Yes, this is my family. I am a descendant of Jane McKenzie Calder.

I notice that you are not sure of Charles Gabriel Davey's 2nd name. It is Gabriel, and is the name he usually is found by in records.

Are you a descendant too? I'm assuming you are from one of the sons by your surname.

Please contact me directly, perhaps we can exchange some missing information.

Irene
ilh@cogeco.ca
Merle
I have a connected family that came into Michigan in the mid 1800's from Ontario Canada and left for North Dakota in the 1880's to the Inkster - Forest River area with a step family, Matthew McDonald. I also know of another Calder family that I think I'm directly related to (an uncle of my grandfather) who stayed in Michigan in and around Grand Rapids. The base person is Alexander Calder who came into Michigan in the early 1890's from Ontario. This is a large family and many are still in the Grand Rapids area. If this sounds interesting or if you have info relevant to this group, i'd be very interested in exchanging info.

None of your names are familiar, and your dates do not fit with mine, so no I don't think we are related. My John Calder came to Canada about 1843.

John Calder was born in 1807 to parents John and Jean Calder.

Sorry I was unable to help you.

Wonder if you could be a relation of mine. My mother was the 5th child of 17 born to Frances Clara Calder.
Frances was my Gran and was married to John Calder. They lived in Inverness at Thornbush Cottage. Frances died in 1991 at the age of 99 and a half. I know that my mum Queenie had sisters called Marjorie, Sylvie, Violet, Rose but I don't have much else to go on. Can you let me know if you are familiar with any of these names.

I believe this is Kathy Licher's line. With her passing, I don't know you can access her research.

There is a book, "A Stranger and a Sojourner" by Billy Higgins about Peter. This might be of help.
Lyle

Hello again,
There is someone else tracing this family at this site:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

The person at the site above appears to be related and so might be interested in the marriage document.

Can you tell me if the marriage record states William Calder's date and place of birth, and/or his parent's names?

Thank you!

John B.
My great-grandfather, Malley Calder, was reportedly from Virginia but I don't know anything else about him. He married Annie Calder from S.C. who was descended from Annanias Calder from Scotland. Have you heard of Malley Calder?

If we had not been in my husband's Bronco with 4-wheel drive we would have never made it. The road was overgrown with weeds taller than the truck and the mud was unbelievable. The cemetery is in horrible condition. Tombstones broken, sunken graves some as much as 2 or 3 feet and completely overgrown. I made a list of most of the graves but several of the graves had wood markers and were rotten so I was not able to make out the names or dates. I also had to bypass some of the graves because of the danger involved in getting to them as they were so sunken."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additional data contributed to Dillon County SCGenWeb by
Danny Caulder, 26 Dec 2002

Hulon Cemetery Dillon SC

Father Mother Spouse

1.

Found two old letters concerning my grandfather, Alexander Mark Calder, who, according to these letters was the son of William (Bill) Calder and Sarah Jane Clements, a daughter of Gabriel Clements and "Peggy" Clements who was a McRae. Also that his g-grandparents were Jacob and Mary Clements and were buried in the Clements Cemetery located on the Western side of Wheeler County. The letters say that Bill and Sarah had three children but only name Alex and Henry. I am trying to trace the Calder line back further. Any help would be appreciated. What's your connection to the family? Alex C.

I bought a photograph of couple at an antique store. There is a handwritten note stating: Charlie - John and Esther Calder, June 1, 1933. The photo looks like a marriage photo and was taken in Twin Falls, ID. I have researched John Calder & found him in Lincoln, McPherson Co., SD; Pembrook, Edmunds Co., SD, Twin Falls, Twin Falls Co., ID; and his death in 1986 in Poulsbo, Kitsap, WA. Haven't been able to find anyone researching this family. If someone is, I'd be happy to send the photo to them.

Horatio Nelson Calder was the 2nd son (and 3rd child) of James Calder and Nancy Lindsay.

James Calder was born 10 Nov 1775 in Walls & Flotta, Orkney Islands, Scotland, to John Calder and Jean Sandison. He was employed by the Hudson's Bay Company, and emigrated to what was then known as "Rupertsland", which was the area of Canada totally owned by the Hudson's Bay Company.

James married Nancy Lindsay, an Indian woman, according to the records of the Hudson's Bay Company. Where she got the surname Lindsay is not known.

Their children were:

Peter Calder, b. abt 1803
Nancy Anne Calder, b. between 1803-1805
Horation Nelson, b. abt 1808
John nCalder, b. abt 1809
Elizabeth Calder, b. 15 Dec 1813
Henry Calder, b. abt 1815
George Calder, b. abt 1818
William Calder, b. abt 1820

There were no churches, and no government in that territory when the Calder children were being born. Nobody really kept any records of such "half-breed' children back then. The dates of birth are estimated from later Hudson's Bay Company censuses.

John:

Thanks.

I have all of the data on her, and all of her children. many of her grandchildren, and so on.

I have been an active part of Metisgen at Rootsweb.com for several years, and the Calder and Foulds families are just a few of the many Métis families that are being actively researched there.

Many of the descendants of the Calder's, the Foulds, etc. have no idea that they descend from Métis families. Their Métis heritage was taken from them because of the extreme racism that existed in much of Canada at the end of the 19th, and into the 20th century against natives, "half-breeds" etc.

Sadly, much of that racism still exists in some areas of Canada to this day. I have a cousin that was horrified to discover that his grandmother was part Indian, and he believes that I have ruined his family heritage because I proved that this was true.

He is not an uneducated person, by the way. He is a retired Crown's Attorney is Saskatoon, SK.

We all are what we are. We should all be proud of our ancestors, whoever they may be.

After all, if some Indian maiden had not married an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company, way back when, I would not be here today.

Hello:
The Library & Archives Canada has recently been adding information to their website relating to this family and others in Manitoba. In the late 1800's various members of the family applied to receive "scrip" and these applications provide additional information on the family. For example, here's something on their daughter, Nancy Anne Calder:

Born: 1805.
North West Territories, Canada.
Died: 1896.
Married to: Samuel Foulds.
Place of Residence: - St. James, Manitoba on June 30, 1875.
Documentation:
Library and Archives Canada, Online MIKAN no. 1500984 - Scrip affidavit for Foulds, Nancy, widow of Samuel Foulds; born: 1805; father: James Calder (Scot); mother: Nancy (Metis); claim no.: 1636; date of issue: Sept. 20, 1876.

I hope this helps!

Regards,
John B.
Hello:
I notice that the family you're tracing turns up in the 1880 U.S. census in Alma, Jackson County, Wisconsin. They had several children born in Canada (likely in Quebec) over a span of about 20 years.
I have quite a bit of information on the various Calder families that resided in Ontario during that time period, and also for the large Calder family in Lachute, Quebec, but your family does not appear to connect with any of them.
Can you give me any more information on the Calders that you are tracing?

Thanks

John B.
