I have heard a similar story about my own ancestry. Funny thing is when I was in canada on a choir exchange trip I stayed with a family with the last name of Calder. They too had heard a very similar story as the one passed down thru my Calderwood family... that being there was a rift in the Calder clan and 1/2 (give or take) the clan rebelled and left seeking refuge from a local king (or maybe a landlord) He gave them refuge in the woods, making them "keeper of the woods". They then added wood to the Calder to differentiate them from the rest of their clan. keep in mind that is my recollection of the story handed down to my dad from his dad. his dad's grandad came over from Scotland, Blantyre are where the Calderwood castle now the House of Calderwood is. My ancestor came over in the mid 1800's and crossed the usa with the handcart companies of the lds pioneers settling in Utah.

FaeLynne Calderwood Gertz

A Calderwood relative of mine, who was born in and grew up in Tyrone, PA, did the Scottish search, traced the line to a castle in Scotland, and discovered that in past times the peasants who worked the lands of the castle often took the name of the castle with them when they moced on. Thus a Calderwood could be actually descended from the owners of the castle, or could be descended from one of the peasants who moved on. There do seem to be a lot of Calderwoods in various parts of Europe when one does a search on the name using Ancestry.com.

Here is some info: My mother married Thomas McRae Dysart at the end of the war, she was his second wife and I was about 7. He was the youngest of 13 children, and his father's name was Henry. I remember that he told me that his family had arrived in NZ via New York from County Antrim, but he was never a story teller. The family settled in Hawkes Bay, 2 brothers becoming farmers in the Sherenden area, and one a garage owner in Hastings. Tom died 1961-62 at Havelock North.
Hope this helps connect the dots, if you haven't already -
Hi Debbie,
Albert A. Taylor, DVM, now deceased, authored a delightful little book, The Calderwood Families of Scotland, Ireland and America in 1964. He really researched the entire area of Scotland while in the Army, and the book is the result. It is full of many different Calderwood genealogies and many suppositions about the possible ancestry of our James and Margaret. It was published by "The Research Publishing Company," 52 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, W. C. a.
The invoice I have came from "Charles Skilton LTD., 2,3,& 4 Abbeymount, Edinburgh, EH8 8EJ, Scotland, UK. Telephone # given was (031)661-9339. This was in 1983, so who knows if they are still in existence. At that time the book cost me the great sum of $6.20--they graciously converted the £4.09 for me. It is worth having. It is full of photos of the famous (to us, anyway, the descendants of the family) Calderwood Castle, and a whole lot of information about many branches of the Calderwood family found in Scotland. His conclusion was that MAYBE the STEWARTON parish in Scotland and narrowed the ancestry to two possibilities. You can contact me at my home e-mail address, marionm 112 @ sc.rr.com--no spaces.
Marion

Ok. He had as siblings, Deborah Green Calderwood 1837 – 1871, Lovisa L CALDERWOOD 1841 – 1901, Jasper Calderwood 1845 – 1920, Fairfield Calderwood 1848 – 1918, and Frederick M Calderwood 1854 – 1854. Linneaus Calderwood was the only sibling to leave Vinalhaven and explore other places. The rest lived out their lives right there on Vinalhaven. I would imagine some are buried at Calderwood's Neck Cemetery on Vinalhaven. Hope that information helps your search. Regards, Ancestry Daig

Hi Ancestry Daig,
Thank you for your response. I finally tracked down Fannie E. Pottle Calderwood through City Directories in San Francisco/Berkeley. She has become one of my "favorites" and I am curious about whether she stay in touch with the Maine Calderwoods- of which there are many, I see! I wonder if I can find any of Linneaus's siblings families. Fannie never remarried, and worked as a nurse (though I don't think she had formal training)until just a few years before she died.
I can't find where she was buried. I wonder if she was buried in Maine? Thanks for Linneaus's parents names. That will help me enormously.
We'll be in touch,
Susan

Hi Susan,

Jessie CALDERWOOD 1812 – 1889 was his father. Lavina C Green 1815 – 1893 was his mother. Supposedly he died 1 Oct 1875 in Maine. I do not have at present a credible source for this exact date. I also don't know how he died. I do know for sure that by 1909 Linnaeus M Calderwood has passed away, as Frances "Fannie" E (Pottle) Calderwood shows up as living in Oakland, Alameda, California at 1901 Milvia and this record shows she is the widow of Linnaeus M Calderwood. Hope this helps you out in your search. (by the way, I am set up here in such a way that whenever you reply to this message I get your message right away.) Regards, Ancestry Daig

vschickie
Pj here have some information here that can be called corrections on Capt James Calerwood who died at Brandywine. first is the ancestrial dot com. posting of a letter from the priest who preformed Capt james marriage to Rachel and also Rachels second wedding to david watson. using that with the information I gathered from the web site mother bedford Capt james Calderwood can not be our james father. age changes everything at best he was a uncle to our James. it is also known from those two sites and two books that I read on loan from a library system back east that Capt James was born in Penn state. This information came to light in Decmeber of 2011. further digging contact me at gmail.com now pj

Kimberly,
I am descended from Samuel Calderwood (brother to James, John, Andrew, Enos, etc). Samuel's father was James Calderwood Jr. but I show he married a Catharine MacDonald, not a Catherine Porter? Perhaps I am confused? but that is what seems to be coming up on ancestry.com on multiple sources. If so, then James Jr's father was James Calderwood Sr. (1742-1777) married to Anne Bremer Brimer (1742-1808). James Calderwood Sr. died in Battle of Brandywine, and then later Anne remarried to a David Watson according to the records I've found thus far. I'm hoping to trace James Calderwood Sr's line farther back. He was from Lanarkshire near East Kilbride, Scotland. email me? vschickie at yahoo dot com.

Have done a lot more research and found these tidbits on James Calderwood's line:
If anyone can go any farther into the past with this, please let me know I'd be very interested.
---
James Calderwood Jr (1760-1834), In 1780 (roughly) he was Married to Catharine MacDonald (1760-1841 - Warrior's Mark, Pennsylvania), she was the daughter of Catharine McNeill 1743 – 1825, and Hugh MacDonald (b. 1739 - ?). James & Catharine had several children (Enos, James, Mary, John, George, Andrew, Sarah, William, Samuel). I'm descended from Samuel.

James Calderwood Jr. (1760-1834) is the son of James Calderwood Sr (b. 04 Feb 1742 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, d. 11 Sept 1777 at Battle of Brandywine) and Anne Bremer Brimer (1742-1808).
Oddly, most of the references I find say they married in 1763, but that means she gave birth to James Calderwood Jr out of wedlock in 1760 if that date is correct.
James Calderwood Sr. died Sept. 11, 1777 in the Battle of Brandywine. (http://pasocietyofthecincinnati.org/Cinnweb/Names/Officer61....).
Copy of letter saying his widow asked for his pay: http://wardepartmentpapers.org/docimage.php?id=3249&docC... - although her name is not mentioned.
After his death, Anne Bremer remarried to David Watson (1741-1803), (not sure what year they married however) and had two children: Jonathan (1765-1818) Susan (1767-?)
---
There are other references to the same James Calderwood who died 1777 in battle of Brandywine- in this forum thread, but they mention totally different wives for him there.
http://boards.ancestry.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=245&amp...
--
also a TON of info here: http://genforum.genealogy.com/calderwood/I have not yet sifted through it all.
---
Basically, I'd like to figure out who James Calderwood Sr's Father is and continue tracking the line in Scotland.
He MAY be the son of Alexander Calderwood and Margaret Maklem, but he also might be the son of Robert Calderwood from Edinburgh. It is very confusing. I have been checking the Christenings lists for this time period, but it is hard to tell.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
vschickie at yahoo dot com.

I have this stuff written down from years ago, would be happy to share what I have but I believe, if I remember correctly, PJ has a more filled out line than I do. Most of those siblings seemed to either stay in PA or go out to CA where I was born. I am now in Maryland, and ran into a second cousin at the hospital I worked at 3 years ago. So we do get around.
My wish is that I could dig deeper into the scottish records of either James or Catherine.

Do you know if this Robert had any connection with horse racing/training in the USA? I'll get back to you hopefully in a few days.

My Calderwoods are Robert and wife Mary Ann (Bradley) who had mostly girls. All the girls married and moved to Belle Plaine, Iowa. One of the girls was Margaret who married Wm O'Neill. Another girl was Rachel who married Wm J. Ried. I've never been able to connect Robert Calderwood to any siblings, as I don't know his parent names. Robert would have been born around 1836 or so and can be found in the 1851 Census. I'm certain he must be related to the others of Rasharkin but how, I just can't find out. Have saved your information in the event I make the connection some day.

My aunt (who was a granddaughter of Jane Calderwood - Matthew and Sarah's eldest daughter), did a great deal of research into the Calderwoods. She certainly quoted 1853 as the birth of Matthew (who married Elizabeth Logan), but I suppose this may not be correct. My aunt related that the original Matthew and Sarah seemed to have a child regularly about every 2 years (Jane 1846,Mary 1849,Nancy 1851,MATTHEW 1853, Sarah 1855 Liza 1857 + 5 more. Send me a direct email (punch@eastlink.ca) and I can send you more details
That's great and yes it is really confusing!. I have just been speaking to my Uncle about this - he has a family tree on this and was telling me that it goes up to Matthew (known as Matthew the Draper) who married Sarah Simpson and their parents Matthew and Mary who all came over from Scotland. I am trying to find out where they came from in Scotland. I will let you know when I have the other info what I find.

Claire.

Hi Grace - don't know if you have seen this yet it is from a great webstie that has the transcripts from the graves in the Churches that most of the Calderwoods went to. the address is: http://www.thebraid.com

There is one which might be worth looking in to - the transcript is below:

Cullybackey Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery 1919 Calderwood erected in loving memory of Matthew H. Calderwood, Killydonnelly. died 15th March 1919, His wife Agnes died 9th Jany 1950, Also their two sons, David, died 20th May 1907, John, died 11th Dec 1951. And tehir daughter Rosina, died 11th Sept 1959.

If you haven't already gone to www.ulsterancestry.com you could go there and look up the 1851 census for the areas, craigs (Cullybackey) and Rasharkin (covers Killydonnelly) - there are Davids on it but the only daughter around this age is called Jane that I can see.

Hope this helps,

Claire.

Thanks for writing. Welcome to the Calderwood jungle! Give me a day or so to look into this - you are probably correct, but there are so many Calderwoods - many intermarried, and often to other distantly related Calderwoods. I shall look through the notes and records I have, and get back to you.

Hi, I am looking for info on the other CALDERWOODS with father David. One daughter is called Rose Anne (or some variation) born about 1848. She got married to Hugh MELLIE in 1866. Her dad was listed as David and I guessed that maybe her mom was Elizabeth? I believe that she is a cousin of Matthew from the other David CALDERWOOD family. Ideas anyone? Thx

Good to hear you managed to trace your family tree back. I too am related to the Calderwoods of Killydonnelly and am wondering if you could shed some light on something. I think you mentioned in one of your earlier posts in 2005 on another forum that Matthew Calderwood b.1853 (who is the son of Matthew Calderwood b.1816 and Sarah (nee Simpson))- Married Elizabeth Logan and named their children. The Matthew Calderwood and Elizabeth Logan are my G grandparents and are burried in Rasharkin and the names of all their children match exactly what you said but having looked at the grave today Matthew (Elizabeths husband) died in 1930 and going by the age he was in the 1911 census he was born about 1861 - are you sure your Matthew has birth date of 1853? It would be good if these 2 were the same person. Please find below copy of the relevant part of the 1911 census to see what you think (the ages of the children here all exactly match my family too).

Calderwood	Matthew	50	Male	Head of Family
Calderwood	Lizzie	40	Female	Wife
Calderwood	Sarah	12	Female	Daughter
Calderwood	John	11	Male	Son
Calderwood	Matilda	8	Female	Daughter
Calderwood	Eliza	7	Female	Daughter
Calderwood	Mathew	5	Male	Son
McCaughern	Rose Anne	23	Female	Servant

I am trying to trace what happened to Jeanie Calderwood (widow [sic], age 29, domestic] who emigrated from Scotland to Canada on board the Hesperian from Glasgow to Quebec, arriving 18 Jun 1910. On the 1911 Canadian census she is listed as Jean Calderwood, born Aug. 1880, working as a housekeeper for the Blackader family in Montreal. On the 1901 census for Scotland she is shown with her husband James Calderwood and her two-year-old son James living in Kilbirnie, Ayreshire. Both she and her husband are listed as born in Kilbirnie as well. I would like to try to find what happened to her after 1911.

Something very strange, I have a Mary Barr that was married to aJohn Borland Sept. 30 1786. Included on this side of the family are Borlands, Calderwoods, Bates. Having some difficulty myself as there are so many David Calderwoods. The Calderwoods on my tree are from Ayr, Scotland. I am hitting some road blocks myself. I hope you are able to connect Jessie somewhere. I will have another look to see if I can find a Jessie for you

CALDERWOOD, Robert

I am looking for more information on the Calderwood families in Scotland (and of course further back if I can get there!) Anyone have any ideas? Here's what I know.

In my tree, I have a Margaret Calderwood - Born Greenock c1844. No one has been able to find a birth record, but her wedding cert (to Henry Wilson b. 1837 in Pt. Glasgow) had her parents as: Robert Calderwood and Margaret MULAKIE. Her death cert (d. 10 Oct 1931 in Greenock/Pt. Glasgow) confirms her parents as well (Robert Calderwood and Margaret Mularkey?sp).

Also, (Greenock Telegraph 8.1.1877): CALDERWOOD, Margaret Milarky, widow of Robert Calderwood, died at 23 Market St., Greenock on 8th Jan 1877 (Greenock Telegraph 8.1.1877) The death cert for her was signed by her son Edward Calderwood. Someone has checked the census returns for them and not been able to find a trace of any Calderwood family with both Edward and Margaret as children living in Greenock or Port Glasgow even though neither of her folks were noted as "deceased" on the wedding cert.

This is not to say they weren't in another town, but any ideas on Robert and Margaret Calderwood and their children Margaret and Edward (I'm sure there were more). By my rough estimates, the parents would have been born in the early 1800s. The daughter, Margaret was born 1844. No idea on Edward.

Jessie Calderwood or Barr

My gr grandmother Jessie McAlpine was b. 26 May 1856, illi. daughter of Jessie Barr, later married to John Hanna. I have searched for this marr. between May and Nov 1856 (when Jessie was registered) to no avail but have now discovered that John Hanna d. 1852 so no idea who Jessie's father is.Jessie snr (real name Janet) then married 1857 to Thomas Simpson and had more children. Jessie jnr was brought up by David Calderwood and his wife Martha Lee m. 1854. David and Martha had no other children that I can find and I am wondering how they came to be given Jessie to bring up as their own. Does anyone know of a connection between the Calderwood and Barr families? David was b. abt 1830 at Dundonald, Ayr and Martha was b. 1830 at Paisley where they continued to live after their marriage.
Hope someone can help, Kind regards, Ruth Fletcher in Australia.
