NANCY L. CALFEE (nee Leighton) - Cleveland, Ohio
Nancy Leighton Calfee, age 93 of Cleveland, Ohio passed away peacefully Monday January 28, 2013.

Nancy was the second daughter born to Thomas Edward and Edith Rowley Leighton on April 26, 1919, in Cleveland, Ohio. Nancy's older brother Robert and sister Jane (Nellis) predeceased her.

Nancy was a graduate of Hathaway Brown School and Smith College, Class of 1941, where she was class president for her Freshman and Senior Years.

Nancy and John (Jack) B Calfee were married on February 8, 1944 and she followed him around US Army bases from Fort Sill, OK to Camp Gordon, GA before he left for Europe in WWII.

Nancy and Jack were married for almost 60 years before his passing in the fall of 2003 at age 90, and during that time they had visited numerous countries in six of the seven continents.

Surviving Nancy are four sons: John and his wife Andrea of Murfreesboro, TN, David and his wife Mimi of Lake Forest, IL, Peter and his wife Jan of South Russell, OHIO and Mark and his wife Debbie of Lakewood, OHIO and 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Nancy as a child always preferred the outdoors to the indoors, a passion she continued in her life as a 40+ year member and past president of the Shaker Lakes Garden Club, a lifelong member and volunteer at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History where she received the Lifetime Volunteer Award, a member of and volunteer at the Possum Long Nature Center in Martin County Florida and a Pied Piper for her grandchildren through the woods on Clubside Road and at the Holden Arboretum.

Nancy loved the summer home at Put-in-bay, Ohio where she could be seen volunteering and working outdoors in a pair of Jack's army pants, shirt and one of her famous chapeaux and teaching her children to fish, water ski, and appreciate the beauty of Lake Erie and its islands.
She was also a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club.
Her love of the outdoors also carried over to sports where she was an excellent golfer, shooting her first hole in one at Mayfield Country Club at age 85.

A Memorial Service is planned in St Paul's Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio at 4pm Friday April 26, 2013, with graveside services in Oakwood Cemetery, Pulaski, Virginia on Saturday April 27th, 2013.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History Natural Areas c/o Jim Bissell, 1 Wade Oval Dr., Cleveland, Ohio 44106 and to the Shaker Lakes Garden Club ("SLGC Centennial Celebration Project") 615 Battles Road Gates Mills, Ohio 44040.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio on Apr. 26, 1919
Departed on Jan. 28, 2013 and resided in Cleveland, OH.

Cuyahoga

I am trying to prove the marriage of Martha CALFEE to Jacob HARRELL. I feel certain that they were indeed married but I can't find the elusive proof! I think that Jacob and "Marthy" his wife (from deeds in Frederick Co., VA) were the parents of my 4g grandfather, Reuben HARRELL b. 1750. Through DNA we have proven that Reuben had a brother, William HARRELL who d. 1822 Wythe Co., VA. William CALFEE brother of Martha, Judith HURST and Elizabeth PADGET, also d. Wythe Co. as did the widow Sarah of his brother John. I would be happy to work with you and share whatever I have -- you can contact me either through this list or at MLarson101@aol.com. Thanks!
Jerry - I don't know if this email will reach you as I am using your 2005 address. I am looking for any info on Martha Calfee who was the sister of William Calfee d. 1801 whose brother John who married Sarah Reagan. This Martha Calfee married Jacob Harrell who first came to the Shenandoah Valley of VA in about 1741. Martha had siblings William, John, Elizabeth Calfee Padgett, Judeth Calfee Hurst, and Frances Calfee Gibson. Specifically I need the birth year of Martha Calfee and, more importantly any children she might have had.

Wiliam B Carlton or Calfee b. 1866 in NC?

He is my great grandfather. Family tradition says he changed his name from Calfee to Carlton, thou not everyone believes this... but two of his daughters told me this in person. His middle name is also in dispute... either Boring or Branch... or ??? I believe he was born in Buncombe Co., NC but his if Calfee is his family they came from Cocke and Jefferson counties in TN in mid 1850s and returned there in mid 1880s? Reason for changing his name... some problem with the law. If any of this rings a bell, please write me at charlene.swankie@gmail.com .

Jerry Lee Calfee (1937-2010), Whittier, CA

Jerry was an early Calfee contributor, always ready and willing to help family historians. We are all very much indebted to him and his research. Jerry was a descendant of Evan Adair Calfee and Elizabeth "Betsy" Woods of Alabama.

Below is his obituary, published in the "Whittier Daily News," Whittier, CA, April 18, 2010:

CALFEE, Jerry L. Calfee, died April 6, 2010 at home in Whittier, California, following a long respiratory illness. Jerry was born October 1, 1937, in Valliant, Oklahoma to Evin and Marie Prince Calfee. Jerry graduated from Whittier High School in 1955, attended Fullerton Junior College, and joined the Navy for two years. He worked for a few years at Dunn & Bradstreet and then returned to college to graduate with a degree from Cal State, Los Angeles. He married Laurel Hanchen in 1962, and they developed a great love for the outdoors, camping, fishing, and hiking in most of the western states. In later years, Jerry worked intently on genealogy, meeting on the Internet many long lost relatives with whom he developed many close relationships. Jerry will be greatly missed by his wife Laurel, son Todd, daughter Susan Poyser and grandchildren Trent, Cole, and Sydney. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Patricia. A memorial service will be held at the Community Presbyterian Church of La Mirada on May 22, at 11:00 A.M.

My great geandfather was Ross Randolph named after his grandfather Randolph Ross.
Re: mystery Bluefield WV

I have been doing research on the Snapp family of Monroe and Mercer County- John Snapp (b. 1800) moved there from Shenandoah County, VA. His son, John William O. Snapp m. Matilda Bailey(daughter of Micajah Bailey and sister of William Bailey and had three children born in Mercer County-James P. b. 21 Oct. 1856, Daniel M. b. 28 Apr. 1858 and Elija J.b. 16 Dec. 1859. During the Civil War John W. O and his brother, Joseph moved to Ross County, Ohio, where Matilda died in 1865. John W. O. then moved after the war to eastern Tennessee- where his father had also gone earlier and there remarried. I am fairly certain that Fannie Snapp was born in 1864, child of John W.O. and Matilda and that she married her cousin Jeremiah Bailey.
Fannie's death certificate, lists her name as Fannie Lowe, wife of M. E. Lowe. She died at Bluefield, 16 Dec. 1942, age 78- the death certificate lists her father as Dan Snapp and mother as a Bailey, but I suspect the informant was confused- Dan Bailey was her brother and it is impossible that he could be her father as Dan Bailey was only 6 years older than Fanny. She must have married Calfee after Jeremiah Bailey died and then married a third time to M. E. Lowe.

I've been trying to research Henry Fritts 1794 and keep coming up with the name Charity Calfey ( Coffee ) and now Calfee. I'm not sure exactly how the spelling is and not getting anywhere with it. But I have seen the marriage date as the same as you mentioned. No records to prove this yet.. but I'm still hoping and looking.
Betty

Lee Calfee, known to thousands of South Texas children as “the picture man,” died of pneumonia Wednesday. He was 85.

His job as a school portrait photographer for the national company that now is called Lifetouch spanned more than 35 years and took him to schools all over South Texas. He would travel the South Texas roads to large and small schools in a big station wagon filled with oversized cameras, umbrellas and other equipment, and loads of plastic combs.

Calfee's daughter Jo Ann Calfee said he was friendly and lighthearted, but those who knew him knew that he took his job seriously.

“When he started doing this, you couldn't run down to Kmart to get a picture taken. This was the only option that most folks had to get a nice portrait done,” she said.

Calfee retired when he was about 60, outlasting many in the school photography business, said Bill Crenshaw, a family friend who took a job with Calfee in 1983 and now is the South Texas territory manager.

“He knew practically every principal in South Texas,” Crenshaw said.

No doubt, Calfee's work has been mailed to faraway relatives, displayed in photo frames and saved behind plastic sheets in photo albums across South Texas. It's something in which he took pride.

“He would wait as long as it took to get the expression that was just right,” Crenshaw said. “He was very good at what he did.”

Calfee was friendly and patient with the children because he liked them — even the older rebels who tried to shoot the finger just as he shot the photo. Part of his skill came with experience. Often, Crenshaw took photos of children whose parents he had photographed as children.

Calfee's pet peeve? “Calling the students ‘kids,'” Crenshaw said. “He just thought it was unprofessional. He called them children.”

Calfee took time to enjoy life, snapping photos of his own family along the way.

Jo Ann Calfee said the family spent their summers enjoying the outdoors. Camping, fishing and hunting were her father's hobbies, and being able to set his own schedule and having summers off provided ample time.

“I was in junior school before I realized that other children's parents were only off work for two weeks, not the entire summer,” Calfee said.
Thank you for your information. I went to look up Kate on historical records and came up with Lelia C Calfee living at Union, Whitman co.,WA. So I'm betting the she took the name Kate from her middle name which probably was Catherine.

I'd still (no pun intended) would like to know more about John Olson and if he was connected to bootlegging. Over the years I have heard (gossip) that my Grandpa Calfee, Wirt Lee Calfee,Sr, would run(a small steamboat) with shine from the headwaters of the Little Priest Lake to some place on the main Priest Lake, where a pack train would be waiting to take the hooch into Spokane, WA.

Thanks again for the info.

Ged W Randall

I think the Calfees were also there or in that part of Virginia as well? Perhaps that is a place to start?

RootsWebWorldConnect Project (under Dillman and Jones Families of Henry County, Ky.)shows that Rhoda Jane Calfee, a daughter of John Calfee and Letitia Vardeman, married Andrew M. Ramsey. One of their children, Sarah Ellen Ramsey, b. 6 Dec. 1814, married Asa Smith, b. about 1810. I have found census verification for Sarah and Asa, my 3rd great grandparents. I have no documentation for Letitia and John.
Another of John and Letitia's children was, according to this same source, John Vardeman Ramsey, born about 1811, who married Frances "Fannie" Inman. The source shows children and grandchildren from this marriage.

The cert clearly shows a John and a Miller as his parents. Use it as a confirmation of other data.

I dont have him in my line so I can't comment. I just put out the info since the Calfee list was small enough to deal with.

source:
http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/

I do have Calfee in my line however. but James wasnt one of them.

These are the official records so I have to assume your stories are not supporting the evidence. Kinda the reason I put raw data out..
