Are you related through the Calhoun or the Kuntz family?

Fanny & Henry married on July 18, 1882 in Grand Chenier, Cameron, Louisiana. Henry appeared in the 1880 census living with William & Julia McShaw family in Cameron parish, Louisiana. Then Fanny & Henry appeared in the 1900 census in Cameron parish, LA; and the 1920 census together in Lake Arthur, Jefferson Davis parish, Louisiana. Since Fanny died in 1929, Henry appeared alone in the 1930 census, in Lake Charles, living with his stepdaughter, Alice McCall (Fanny's daughter from her first marriage).

Henry is supposedly the son of Michael Kuntz (b. GA) & Sophie Weber (B. LA) but I do not have any other information on them. henry died sometime after 1930. Fanny's obituary appeared in a Crowley, Arcadia, Louisiana newspaper but I do not know where she was buried. She was not buried next to her first husband, Albert.

Fanny & Henry had at three children together:

#1) Ida Alice Kuntz b. APR 1877 in LA

#2) George Bryant Kuntz (b. 11 FEB 1887 in Grand Chenier Married Beulah U. --- and d. 23 AUG 1968 in Jennings, Louisiana.

#3) Mary A. Kuntz (b. circa 1891 in Louisiana

#4) Charles Ira Kuntz (b. 12 MAR 1892 in Grand Chenier Married Freda Wilhelmina Walters on 23 DEC 1915 and d. 18 SEP 1980 in Kinder, Allen, Louisiana. He is buried in Carter Memorial Cemetery.

I have an excerpt regarding Fanny & Henry, taken from a book written by my Hollister cousins, Archie Stine Hollister & Bernice Hollister Denny.

REF: "Where the Wild Goose Goes" Page 24

CHENIER SCHOOLS OF 1895

"The unpainted, one-room building was at the east end of the present SWEENEY farm. It had been built as a parsonage for the Rev. Frank SWEENEY when he became a widower. Mother [Susan Aby McCall STINE] thinks that he never occuplied it, however.

The interior was rudely finished. Unfinished, perhaps, is a more accurate descriptive term. Along the north wall a shelf, slightly sloped, called the writing desk, was built. Before it was a backless bench on which the pupils sat during penmanshipo period. Plank benches were built against other walls, the walls themselves serving as backs.

The teacher sat in a homemade chair with a rawhide bottom. She had no desk except for a part of the one for the pupils' writing.

A small shelf attached to the south wall near the door held a big zinc bucket of drinking water. In it was a customary long-handled dipper. Individual drinking cups and germs were still strangers to the Chenier folk. No well on the school ground necessitated the carrying of water by the larger boys from homes of neighboring families.

Mother's first school session lasted three months. About thirty children were enrolled.

Her first teacher was Mrs. Henry KUNTZ, the former Fannie CALHOUN, whose first husband, the late Albert McCALL, was a brother to my own great-grandfather, William. Mr. KUNTZ, a trader, took Aunt Fannie back and forth to school in a hack. My mother considered herself a lucky little person because she was privileged to ride each day with her teacher. . ."

Later, a new school was built on the west end of Mr. George MAYNE's property, the present Canik estate. A Mr. Sam DURSAN of Mansfield served as the first teacher."

We have a lot in common, both of us descended from a Duncan Calhoun who have married Harper ladies. However my Duncan married Emily Harper. It seems that the Calhouns came from NC to Copiah Co. MS then John, Hugh and Mary Calhoun Dean shows up in Lauderdale Co. with your Duncan. They are all on the tax rolls for Laud. in 1835. I think my Duncan along with Edward Harper's family moved to Kemper Co. MS. The Kemper Co. courthouse burned down a long time ago along with court records that would have been helpful to us all. There are several entries in the Lauderdale Co. Deed books that have your Duncan. I believe he is listed in Book A pages 34, 93, 96, 429, 430, 431 and 438. On page 93 dated Sep 1838, Elizabeth B. is named with Duncan. I'm not sure if she is listed on the other pages. On pages 34 and 429 Duncan's name is recorded Duncan Calhoun President of the Board of Police. In Book J page dated Dec 1855, land is being lease and Duncan Calhoun President of the Board of Police is recorded. I was thinking that Duncan died before 1850 since Elizabeth and children are in Copiah Co. without him. I think her parents (James A. and Mary Harper)stayed in Copiah Co. so it would be understandable that she moves back to be with family. There are other people researching your Duncan and James A. Calhoun. They have posted queries and have signed in as silverwolf6000 and CYndi Sistrunk. I hope you are corresponding with them. I wish I could be more helpful and if I do come across any more information I will be glad to share it with you. And I hope you in turn will do the same for me.
Thank you, Royce

Royce,

Thank you so much for your information! Yes, William G. Calhoun appears to be the correct husband of my gg-gma Maranda! He was one of my possibilities but I didn't have enough strong evidence to support it until you disclosed those Lauderdale County land deeds. I so appreciate your help!

I just returned from a trip to see my parents and was given information regarding MJ Calhoun, via my mother's Hollister cousins. It was on this trip that I was told MJ's name was Maranda. Once Maranda moved to Louisiana, she was married a 2nd time to a Mr. John Welch. This "Gpa Welch" was the man her grandchildren knew for their Gpa Calhoun had evidently died while in Mississippi (which supports the possible death date you gave for William G as Apr 5th, 1860 before MJ moved from MS to LA).

As for Maranda's children: Her eldest was Frances Armeta Calhoun ("Aunt Fanny") born circa 1849 in Meridan, Lauderdale, MS. She married 1st) Albert Henry McCall and 2nd) Henry Kuntz. She had six children in all (three from the first marriage & three from the second). Her husband, Albert McCall was buried in the McCall cemetery (along with Maranda's parents, Richard Byran Glen Harper & Mary Ann Thomas). Fanny died 17 JUL 1929 (I just received a copy of her obituary).

Maranda's 2nd child was Walter Patrick "Pack" Calhoun, born circa 1851 in Meridian, MS. He married Martha J. Rutherford and died after 1900. I am in contact with one of his descendants.

Maranda's 3rd child was Alice Cornelia Calhoun (my gg-gma) born 10 SEP 1855 in Meridian, MS. She married Edward Augustus Hollister in her mother's home in Leesburg, Cameron Parish, Louisiana. Gma Alice had 11 children and died 29 MAY 1935 in Navasota, Grimes, Texas. I am currently working with numerous Hollister cousins in an effort to flesh out this line & coordinate family photographs.

As for evidence that Maranda belongs to RBG Harper: She was found in the 1860 census with his family, along with her three children and I have a letter, written by Maranda's granddaughter, (my ggma Ola Lydia Hollister Cottom) that states: "My mother's maiden name was Alice Calhoun. Her mother's maiden name was Harper. I don't know her given name."

This is so exciting!

--Cari

I am a descendant of Edward Augustus Hollister & Alice Calhoun, through their daughter Ola Lydia.

Alice Calhoun's mother was M.J. Harper (possibly Mary Jane?) born circa 1831 in Mississippi. M.J.'s parents were Richard Bryan Glenn Harper (1811-1878) and Mary Ann Thomas (1812-1877). RBG Harper died in Grand Chenier, Cameron Parish, Louisiana and was buried in the McCall Cemetery. I have this line a bit farther back, if you are interested.

As for Alice's father, I have never been able to prove his name conclusively. One cousin believes she was the daughter of a Benjamin Calhoun but couldn't find absolute proof of that. At the age of 29, MJ was living with her parents in 1860 in Lauderdale county, Missisippi. (She had her three children, W. Pack, Fannie & Alice with her.) Do you know what the W.H. stood for?

I purchased a Family Maps of Lauderdale County, MS and found where RBG Harper owned land in the T7-N R15-E quadrant. There were four different Calhoun's living nearby: John, Hugh, Archibald G, and Duncan. (Their land was purchased in 1841) whereas RBG Harper had purchased some lots between 1841 - 1858. Could any of these men be the father of a W. H. Calhoun?

France Armeta Calhoun was the daughter of M.J. (Mary Jane?) Harper, who was the daughter of Richard Byran Glenn Harper & Mary Ann Thomas. In 1860, MJ was living with her three children in her parent's home. I have not been able to find her in any census after that. RBG Harper was buried in the McCall cemetery in Grand Chenier. Fannie Calhoun married Albert Henry McCall. Albert was buried in that same cemetery but I cannot find any information on Fanny's burial. The cemetery has been torn up due to recent hurricane activity so maybe her tombstone is now lost.

I just purchased a book written by some Hollister cousins which has a couple of stories about Fanny & her second husband, Henry Kuntz, if you are interested.

I have not been able to prove conclusively the name of MJ's husband. Some believe it is W. H. and other's believe it is Benjamin.

The only children I have for the Calhoun/Harper union is Alice Cornelia Calhoun (my gggma), Walter Patrick Calhoun & Frances Armeta Calhoun.

--Cari

I am so glad to see your posting about MJ Calhoun. I wanted to find out more about her and her children. The last information I had of her was the 1870 LA census living in the same county as RBG Harper. I didn't know that she was his daughter. The Harper family reseachers will be glad to learn of this. They have RBG's line and she is not included. They start with Benjamin F. Harper born in 1835. However RBG and Mary Ann Thomas were married in Copiah county Nov 29 1830, Duncan Calhoun was bondsman. If they were married in 1830 then it makes sense that they would have a child before 1835. In 1840 RBG is in Kemper county and they have 4 kids, so it looks like they have 2 girls that are not accounted for. If you have records that prove M.J. is his daughter I would love to pass it on to the Harper researchers.
The Calhouns and Harpers are definitely intertwined. RBG is a descendent of Edward and Mary Harper. He has two sisters that marry Calhouns. Eleanor Harper married John Calhoun and Emily Harper married Duncan Calhoun. There is another Duncan Calhoun that marries Elizabeth B. Harper. She is the daughter of James A. Harper (Edward's brother).
If you like to read about these Harpers you should go to the Harper Family Genealogy Forum. To the top right there will be a number of postings, it will say (jump to #)then type in 6239.
The M.J. Calhoun that is your relative I "believe" is Maranda J. who was married to William G. Calhoun. They certainly had dealings with RBG Harper. From Lauderdale county land deeds; Book E page 175 July 1846 John & Eleanor Calhoun to W.G. Calhoun. Book E page 188 July 1846 W.G. & Maranda J. Calhoun to John Calhoun. Book F page 23 June 1848 W.G. & Maranda J. Calhoun to RBG Harper. Book F page 453 Jan 1851 W.G. & M.J. Calhoun to RBG Harper. Book G page 96 William G. Calhoun elected Justice of the Peace in district No. 1 on June 11, 1853. Book L page 13 M.J. Calhoun to J.A Johnson in Aug 1866. They had other transactions but I just listed the ones you would be interested in.
I kind of think that William G. "might be" John and Eleanor's son, but there not enough proof now. However I have come across records of a Calhoun-Smith bible which have John's son E.A.B. Calhoun and his children listed. There is an entry of William G. Calhoun that died Apr 5 1860. Two months later July 26 1860, the MS census has M.J. Calhoun and children living in the house-hold of RBG Harper.
I know lots of other Calhouns but I don't know of a W.H. or Benjamin Calhoun. Postings on the internet has certainly been very helpful to me and I do appreciate all that you have done. Hope to hear from you soon.
Keep the family alive, Royce

John William CALHOUN b. 1866 m. Esther KENDRICKS b. 1888, lived in Elba, Coffee Co. AL

I am also hoping to make connections in our Calhoun family tree. I hope this information might help with your search.
I am looking for the family of my grandfather John William Calhoun b. 1886. He was born in Coffee County Alabama and lived in Elba, Opp, Victoria, Deanville, and Mobile Alabama. I have located one record (WWI draft registration card). He is listed as married with 7 children and 30 years old. He was married to Esther Kendricks b. 1888 in Alabama. There were several brothers who also registered at the same time James C. b. 1880, John William b.1886, Thomas b. 1887, Monroe 1888, John b. 1889, Alto Daniel b. 1898, & Ambros Powell b. 1900. There was also a census which listed the younger brothers with a brother named Shelby b. 1902 and a sister Fannie b.1898. The family was living with their mother, Julia or July, and their father James J Calhoun in Deanville, Coffee Cty. Alabama in 1910 and 1920..
Please email response to me through Ancestry or with debrapolster@gmail.com

Thanks,
Debra Calhoun Polster
There are two other original spellings: Colechon and Colquhon the first being (northern) French and the 2nd being Highland Scott.
My nephew(s) and brother live in Ft Lauderdale FL ( one is John and the other Byron) and know a lot more than I do.

DNA Says Calhoun - Taylor County, GA 1865-1875

I located my g-grandmother, Mahaley Jane WHITTINGTON, in the 1880 census for Taylor County, GA (along with her three sons, including my grandfather, Rufus Whittington). However, I’ve been unable for years to find my g-grandfather. Whittington was my g-grandmother’s maiden name, and so I thought she may have married a Whittington cousin. I was never able to find her in the 1870 census.

Now, my Y-DNA testing shows a 67 marker exact match with a CALHOUN and multiple near matches with other Calhoun cousins. When I went back and searched the Taylor County 1870 census for Calhoun, I found a James Calhoun, Sr. and James Calhoun (possibly his son) that lived a few houses apart, and with a Mary Whitington (misspelled) that lived in between them. The census also listed an A.L. Calhoun, an A.M. Calhoun, and David Calhoun as other adult males living with their families in Taylor County.

This Mary was the right age for my g-grandmother, and according to the census, had a 3-year old son named George. Looking at the actual image, it isn’t clear her name was Mary. It was M something. I couldn’t find this Mary and George in the 1870 census. So, maybe this was my Mahaley Jane Whittington and her 3-year old son Gordon. And, maybe one of these Taylor County Calhouns was the father of grandfather Rufus that was born in 1875.

The Y-DNA database says the probability that the Calhoun (with the 67 marker exact match) and I have a common ancestor is 90% back 4 generations and 99% back 8 generations. The matching Calhoun has an ancestor, Rev. Alexander Colhoun, back 8 generations that lived in Ireland and is likely also my ancestor.

Any of you that can share information about the Calhouns living in Taylor County, GA in 1865-1875, I would very much like to hear from you. Please post at this board, or contact me directly at larry@whittingtonassociates.com. Thank you.
Hi Tiffany,
I hope you are reading this message board because I just confirmed your recent post with my mother ( Grand-daughter of Sarah Calhoun who had a daughter Marnie). My Great Grandmother (Sarah) did live in Sugar Hill, NY (Manhattan). Marnie is the youngest of at least 3 or 4 other children. My mom confirmed the last names that Aunt Marnie was listed under (Calhoun, Phillips and Watson). Please! Please! email me back! I have a ton of information to provided for you; including your Grandmother's siblings. Finally I found a long lost relative.

Tiffany,
I think that I may be the link to your Grandmother. Did she have any siblings living in NY (Brooklyn) perhaps? My Grandfather had a sister that lived in the Boston, Mass area named Marnie and I am almost sure their Mother's name was Sarah Calhoun. Please email me back.
