This website is for the non-profit organization called "La Grande Famille de Procida & Ischia". If you joined the organization you could actually view the original records of your ancestors that are recorded in the church/parish registers.

There is a reasonable yearly fee ($50-$60 depending on the exchange rate) of course, but the funds go towards funding the organization's projects to collect, preserve and publish the records on the islands of Procida and Ischia.

If you are seriously interested in your genealogy/ family history it would be worth the small investment to build your family tree. The only other option would be to spend $2000 hiring a professional genealogist.

I have been able to trace my Ischian family tree back 5-6 generations to my 7th Great Grandparents including mutiple branches of the Calise family.

Hopefully this helps you find your family,

Alex

Joseph,

I don't know if there is a connection, but did you know that there is a church in Forio called Santa Maria di Loreto that has some works of art by C. Calise and another artist named Di Spigna? I'm not sure if these would be relations, but it would surely be interesting if they were. Good luck.

P. Calise

Hello All,

There are a whole lot of Calise's from Ischia (also many still living there and in Naples proper). My grandfather was Attilio Calise, who was born in Casamicciola Terme and immigrated to US with his mother (Artemisia) and 4 siblings Maria, Arcangela, Michelangelo and Domenico in 1920. His father, I believe, was named Francesco Calise and was a sailor of some kind, I believe crossing the Atlantic more than one time. Artemisia's surname on the passenger manifest is given as Boccalone, and she traveled also with her brother, Ermengildo Boccalone. In addition to this nuclear family, Francesco's 19 year old nephew Umberto Ussia was also on board. I'm not sure if these names fit into anyone else's family puzzle, but I would be very interested to know if there are connections out there. I also know very little of this family and would love to learn more.

Patrice Calise

My father's mother was Antonetta Calise. She was born in Forio on the island of Ischia on July 6, 1879. I believe she was an only child and was sent to the USA about 1903 by her uncles after her parents died. She married Ralph Russo about 1906. Her parents were Guiseppe and Madellina Calise. I have seen many Calise's on Ancestry but I do not know if any are related. Are you in contact with relatives on Ischia? It's a beautiful island. I was there in 2005.

Dan Russell

I have a grandfather Eugene Nacci who apparently was an orphan & I believe that there was a connection to the calises in ischia as well. He grew up in Providence. I know there's probably only one or two other Nacci families in Rhode Island (I met a fellow who isn't related), so it shouldn't be hard to track down. Contact me if you have any q's. I found census info on the calises who were living in RI in 1910 elsewhere...

To ALL CALISE Researchers

Not to discourage anyone about relationships, but...a little info that I learned from my mom and her Calise family regarding the Calise name.

My grandfather, Giovanni Guiseppe Calise immigrated to the USA in 1914. His father, Vito Mario, in 1910 before him. Vito brought his adopted son his natural daughter. Giovanni came with his mother and the rest of his siblings.

Back in the early 1960s, my grandparents took my mom to visit my grandfather's homeland, Forio d'Ischia. When they got there, Mom noticed a great number of Calise families on the island. She was told the name was like "Smith" in the USA. It is that common. As a matter of fact, Ischia and Naples area are the most condensed areas of Italy with the Calise name.

Now, I'm not saying we are not all related somewhere down the road, BUT...just not anywhere close to like the 1900s, 1800s, 1700s...maybe 1300. I don't know, but I can tell you that back in the middle ages Normandy ruled an area of what is now Italy called the Two Sicilies...or something similar. This area encompassed from Sicily up to Naples and included all the Islands off the coast, which would have included Ischia. This is of interest to Calise folks because I have been told the Calise name is of Norman ancestry adn origin.

Good luck to all in finding their families.
I, of course, have yet to get past my immigrating grandfather and great grandfather!

Robyn Stacey

Possibly Anna & Gartero???
It also lists Luigi as being a brother of Giuseppe.

It also lists Antonio Faleo as a brother in Law- presumably to Giuseppe.
If anyone know anything about this Antonio, PLEASE contact me. I would love to know if Grazia was his sister or not and what happened to this family

JFALEO1 at sbcglobal.net

thanks!
Jo

I am the grandaughter of Salvatore Calise. He came to the United States around 1901. He had a brother who also came over but at the moment I forgot his name. His sister Mary Louise also was here. Does anybody over there remember Salvatore?

Regards,
Michele

p.s. I am the grandaughter, my name is spelled like the male version of Michelle. I do no know why my mother did this.

Hello Joseph, I am Maureen Monte Elmore from North Carolina, but born in Brooklyn in 1960. My dad, Raymond born in 1930, is the only son of Anthony Ralph Monte born in 1899(deceased) and Philomena Mansi Monte(deceased). Anthony, my grandfather was the son of Antonio Monti and Maria Angela Mattera DiSPigna Monti (DiSpigna being the name of her first husband with which she had one son, Bernard). Antonio Monti's parents were Angelo Monti and Luisa Doria of Lacco Ameno. Maria Angela's parents were Antonio Mattera and Restituta Calise of Lacco Amenno. I have the marriage certificate of Antonio and Maria Angela dated 1898. There is an address: 35 President St. Brooklyn, NY. There are also two witnesses: Francesco Monti and Cecilia Lubrana. I hope these common names are not just a coincidence. I look forward to your reply. Maureen

Here is what I can add: any more with be great. My grandmother, Carminela Calise came to NYC in 1888 from Forio, d'Ischia.

Joseph Leonard Dispigno .. that's me .. born 12.21.1937 on Grand Street

Father = Phillip Dispigno born 5.22.1906 in Forio, d’Ischia married Giovanninni Mattera (born 1.12.1910 on Grand Street) married 9/1931

Joe’s mom was the daughter of Pasquali Mattera (born 2/1884 in Lacco Ameno, d’Ischia) married Carmela Calise (born 11/14/1888 in Forio) she was the daughter of Contadina and ? Calise of Forio. (Carmela, his grandmother, was the matriarch of the Mattera family here in NYC) She came to NYC in 1899 age 11 on a ship named the Kaiser, with her older sister. Rumor has it that the people prayed to God to make the safe journey as the ship was very old and this turned out to be it’s last voyage. The Calise family, according to Carmela, were the third richest family on the island of d’Ischia. They had servants and had own farm and livestock.)

Joseph Dispigno (my Joe’s grandfather, Phil’s dad) born probably in 1884 in Forio, was a cook for a Merchant Marine line. He died at 27 years old. That Joe Dispigno was married to Antoinette Costello of Forio. She is my Joe’s paternal grandmother.
Dear Francesca,
My grandfather was John G. Cariello. He died during 1916-1918 in World War I fighting for the USA. His son, my Dad, was a baby and never knew him. Dad was later adopted and changed his name.

My grandfather, John, was married in Seattle, Washington, USA.

We may be no relation, but I thought I would write. My father, Jack Quinn, died in 1984. I am 48 years old and wish to know my father's family.

Hi Raena,
My Dad said no one has heard from your Grandfather in years. No one knows if he is Dead or Alive. I don't think your Father would be too happy about this either! I haven't seen JK and Dena in about 15 years. Last I heard they were in California. I remember your Uncle Paul well. He was married to Claudia. I run into her now and then. I also see your cousins...the twins, Billy Bobby now and then and they recognize me along with Pamela. Other than that, this Calise family doesnt see much of each other. Do you have any brothers or sisters? Are you married? Any kids? I have 1 sister and 1 brother, and 1 daugher who is 12. You can email me at ASHSGIRL77@AOL.COM instead of these postings if you like. Talk again, Robin

Hi Robin: I am 33 years old. I live in Greenville. Originally from Johnston. I've been very curious about the family for many years. My father does not know that I have been searching. I'm sure he wouldn't be too keen on the idea given the circumstance. My Aunt Barbara is well (3 children). My father had a brother (Paul) who is deceased. Yes, my uncle Johnny died a long time ago. I haven't seen John (JK) or Dena in a long time. They're both out of state I believe. So, your dad has no idea where my dad's father is? No one seems to know. I imagine he might be dead although I'm not sure. He never showed up for his mothers or his son's funeral. The last we knew he was in California, and I can't seem to find any more information. Thanks for any information you may have. Nice meeting a relative!!! Talk to you soon.
Raena
