I'm sorry, this probably won't help you on your particular search, but I, too am searching for a Calla(g)han-Doherty couple and their families. James Callahan and Mary Doherty had my g-g-mother Annie in Donegal in 1868 and at least 2, Hannah and Mary, and maybe 3 (Bridget) sisters after. James died in 1873, Mary probably in 1883 before Sept when the 2 older girls immigrated to Pittsburgh, PA. They went to live with 2 maiden aunts in their late 40s, named Ann and Kate Gibbons.
Family lore tells of a Doherty going to Australia and becoming known as the King of Rochester (I think?). I have not been able to find out anything about that. To confuse things, young Mary Callahan married John Callaghan in 1892 or so and they lived in Letterkenny. There is also lore about a female Doherty going to Aus. and becoming a writer (maybe the "King's" daughter). I'll ask my aunt more about that. Could there be a connection? Could your John be the "King?" ;)

Kate (born 1874 in England) came to Canada in 1889 and worked as a domestic for the Pouliot family in Quebec (1891 census of Canada). She subsequently 'disappears' and does not seem to be in Canada on 1901 census - also no sign of her marrying in Canada.
All nine of Denis and Margaret's children (of which I have records) were baptized in Coachford Parish. On the records until 1888, the family is listed as living in Rylane. In the 1901 and 1911 census records, the family was living in Rylane. The Poor Law Union was Macroom.

None of the records I have for that family came from Kilmacrane Banteer.

Hi,

Thanks for the message. I re-read your e-mail after I responded and realized that you were in NJ. That seems to be the area our family settled in once they arrived from Ireland.

My great-grandparents lived in Newark at some point. I am not sure for how long as they later moved to Belmar. My great-grandfather, Mike worked for the City of Newark driving a trolley.

My grandfather was also named Michael, but his family called him Joe. He was Winnie's brother and therefore was also your mother's first cousin. He worked for IBM and died in 1964.

I really liked my great-aunt Winnie. She taught me a lot about our family. She was a very nice person and I was lucky to have known her. Barbara is a sweetheart. I have only met Pat once, but she was very nice as well.

Your grandparents were in Newark and I believe your grandfather Mike drove a trolley in Jersey City so they could have lived there as well.

We visited Uncle Mike and Aunt Norah every summer and drove Aunt Helen down with us.

I never met your Dad or Joe Looby.
Wow! I am so excited to be in touch with a cousin in Ireland!

Well...As you know, my great-grandmother was Honora (Nora) Callahan Looby. Her son, Michael Looby was my grandfather.

I talk to Barbara in NJ every once in a while...mostly by e-mail. She and Patty are my second cousins as well. Their mother, Winnie was my great-aunt.

I paid a research company to trace the Callahan family for me. They were not able to go back very far unfortunately.

Is the name Callahan or Callaghan? I have seen it in the records with both spellings?

I have the 1901 and 1911 census returns for our family that I can send to you.

Please feel free to e-mail me as I am happy to share whatever I have.

am trying to trace the family of my great grandmother Annie Callaghan. she was born around 1860 in Deptford, London and I believe, although not 100% sure, that her parents were Dennis (born 1825 Limerick) and Julia (born 1829 Limerick). They were living in Deptford by the time they had their first child Mary in 1849.
Annie and my great grandfather George Samual Rice got as far as having marriage banns read but there is no record of a marriage even though she was thereafter known as Annie Rice. They stayed in UK.
If by any remote chance you have some information I would be extremely grateful.
Hi all,

Me again, hope this finds you all well

On my research trail again.... Seeing as I'm getting nowhere fast with my Lithuanian side I decided to concentrate more on my Scottish side and I though I'd look for my Grandmother's siblings. Much too my surprise I found my granny's youngest sibling, her sister Frances who was born in 1908c and I found her death cert on SP stating that she died in 2002 aged 94 If only I'd known this years ago I could have tried to see her and find out if she could fill in some blanks. Anyways, I'm now looking to see if anyone recognises the names and knows if any of Frances' children are still alive and maybe just maybe they may have some photos of my gran and/or grandad or some stories they could tell me.

Frances Callaghan was born in Blantyre to William and Ann Callaghan (nee Summers) I'm not sure if she married only the once, but the name given when she died is Carracher from Hamilton, Lanarkshire. She married a Michael Gara and spent her life there. She died between 1901 and 1911. Thank You for any information you might have. Do you know the name of Thady Callaghan's parents.

Hi, I have just seen you postings. Just discovered I have a Thomas Callaghan in Midleton born in this same era. Have not an exact date as yet. He is the nephew of my grgr grandfather Just wondering if you have found more info re the parents or siblings? Know the parents names and siblings but not sure it is the same man. I see on Cork births there is a Jeremiah born 1834, The reason I did wonder is Thomas mother was a Charlotte FitzGerald. So far I have only info re. Thomas word of mouth as it were. If he is the same happy to help with what little I do have. Thanks Maureen

I have never attached anything to 'ancestry' so would prefer to do it the 'old way' - attaching to usual e-mail.

I have quite a bit on Thomas researched at the National Archives, Kew, England and have copied documents verbatim. Are you writing an article/book on governors or do you just have a general interest?

I do voluntary work at the National Archives on naval documents and other odd bits of research at other times privately.

If let me know your level of interest I can choose from my research what to send you.

Jackie

I have only just come across this item on the messageboard.

I researched the above for an author and the book was published in April this year. It is called 'Running the Show - British Colonial Governor' by Stephanie Williams and is published by Penguin - Viking. Ther eis ahcapter on 'Thomas' in this.

I think in some of those missing years he was in London - on leave - due to ill health. It was about 1871 that he married Alice Arnold of Gravesend (there is quite a bit about her family on the Gravesend website - just look for anything 'Arnold.' Her father a JP was Mayor eight times!

JTF Callaghan died in 1881 in a hotel in New York shortly (about three hours) after arriving there on his way back to England. You can find the report in the New York Times archives available online.

I can let you have a few more details if you are still looking for them. I am going through my resaearch this weekend for someone else so it will be no trouble.

Jacqueline Day BSc(Hons)

Hi Jacqueline, Have found more about Thomas since I posted the query. He is definitely my relation. His father Mathias definitely had the woollen Drapery store, but as far as the records I have seen it was in Midleton not Dublin. Maybe he started a second store in Dublin? Son John carried on the business in Midleton after father's death. His mother was Charlotte Fitzgerald my gr gr grandfather's sister. Mathias is buried at Midleton dying 1851. Charlotte died 1877 at Midleton. There were actually 14 children in that family. All this is just new to me. Two days old actually. Have found whatever was on Ancestry plus Googled Thomas Jeremiah Fitzgerald Callaghan. In the old cememtery book was also information. His name was was given this way in that. Have photo of Gravesend Grave from Ancestry board. Anything else I would be grateful for. Thank you Jacqueline. Maureen

Hello Maureen

I was researching Jeremiah Thomas Fitzgerald Callaghan (known as Thomas) for an author who was writing a book on Victorian Colonial Governors, of which Thomas was one.

I did find quite a bit about him and would be very happy to share them with you. I cannot send you any details for the moment as I have to find my research notes.

What I can remeber is that his father was a woollen draper in MIdleton who moved to Dublin where he was described as a 'merchant.'He had two sisters and may have had brothers but I can't remember.

Thomas went to Trinity College, Dublin and studied as a classical scholar. Following which he was a Barrington Lacturer on Political Economy for the Dublin Statistical Society. He then went to Hong Kong as Chief Magistrate and was later Administrator of the Gambia, Governor of Labuan, the Falkland Islands and finally the Bahamas.

His health suffered greatly due it the various climates etc he had lived in and shortly after arriving in the Bahamas he was so ill he was sent back to England. However, he never arrived as he was taken ashore when the ship berthed at New York and he subsequenmtly died in a hotel there a few hours later in 1881 aged 52.

If it is your ancestor you may like to read the book where there is a chapter on Thomas and his wife, Alice. It is called 'Running the Show - Governors of the British Empire' by Stephanie williams and was published in April this yeat by Penguin - Viking (ISBN 978-0-670-9805-8).

If you can tie up any of this with your ancestor please let me know and I will let you have any other information I think would be of use to you.

Jacqueline Day BSc(Hons)

I too have Callaghans from Hastings County. It is a family line that just seems to fade away whenever I try to trace it!

My great-great grandmother was Ellen Callaghan, born c1820 in Ireland, died in Marine City, St. Clair Co., Michigan, after 1880.

Ellen married John Stockwell (born in New York) c1842. Their children:
Elizabeth, born Upper Canada
Johanna, born Belleville
James, born Upper Canada
Catherine, born Upper Canada
Dennis, probably born in Sombra
Thomas, born in Upper Canada
Joseph, born in Upper Canada
John L.
Hi Jann,
I realize that this is a very old thread, but I am hoping that you are still researching the Callighans of Marysville and your offer to help is still active. I tried to email you but was unsuccesful.

My main interest is Mortimor (Murtagh) Callaghan (1809 - 1884). Please email me direct at d_lanter@yahoo.com and I will give you the other family information that I have.

Thank you,
Dan
