Re: Callan from Co Monaghan, Ireland

Hi, Rolymetcalfe
We have a lot of Callans that migrated from Monaghan down to Cavan and are chronicled in my website http://www.callanworld.com. However, none named James with that birth year. Our only James of that era was born in 1835, not 1853. Most of our Callans were emigrating to USA betwen 1850 and 1880, but there was family of Peter Callan's who stayed behind and whose decendants still live in that area.

You will find them mentioned in two books on my site, either a book by an ancestor named Luke Callan, or in a history of Callans and McClarys which I wrote a few years ago. Both are found at http://www.callanworld.com/browsemedia.php?mediatypeID=histo...

Peter Callan family is mentioned on page 40 and following of this link: http://www.callanworld.com/histories/Ireland40.pdf

And page 14 and following of this link: http://www.callanworld.com/histories/CallansAndMcClarys.pdf

If you do find the connection to Callan families who came to Cavan County in the 1700s to the area of Ballyjamesduff or Kilnaleck, please stay in touch. I would love to update my website callanworld to include the lost Callans of England!

best regards,

John Callan
jcallan@msn.com
Redmond, Washington

What information are you looking for? Birth registrations? Marriage Registrations? Spouses names? Death years? To answer these, it would help if you sent some specific dates, or at least years with these names. Are they born 1890s, 1930s or 1980s? It will make a difference to those of us who have access to databases that may have your names. All depends on the years you need. Can you send more information for births for this family and let us know what you are hoping to find? Meg G in Oklahoma USA

My wife's ancestor is Rosa Callan who married William Johnston in Rochester, New York 1850. Rosa was six months pregnant at the time; we guess they crossed from Canada to New York to marry. William and Rosa later moved to Illinois.

Her parents are Lawrence Callan and Julia O'Brien Callan who died after 1870 where they are last found on census in Tuscola Co. Michigan living with family of Christopher Callan, who is probably Rosa's brother; a Christopher Callan was witness to Rosa's marriage.

Some of Christopher Callan's descendants went to Missouri; found in early 20th century census records in St. Louis & Webster Grove.

Looking for earlier and additional information on this family. I believe they originally came to Canada, then US. Would love to find immigration records; no luck so far.

Please excuse me, where is Irishtown?
Did John Callan b. 1835 emigrate to the USA? If so, when?

My Callan clan was in Lambertville, NJ in 1849 but I don't know much about their life in Ireland nor Patrick's siblings or parents. There is obviously sme connection with Hugh Callan who was already in Lambertville in 1849 but I don't know what.

Mike,

Good to hear from you again on this page.

I think the only way to figure out the Hugh Callan - Patrick Callan connection is to go through the old church records at the Catholic Church in Lambertville. Patrick, his wife Ann and a relative Catherine (spinster?) are buried in the church cemetery up on the hill above the town. Tom Rue (or was it you?) did the connection between the MeGuires and Callans I believe. He went to Ireland as well to figure out these relationships. That is all I recall. Need birth and death records for the imigrants

Looking for information on John Callan. His wife was named Mary ? b. 1819 Ire d. 1902 Kent Co MI. I have a son named Edward Callan b. Aug 1856 d. March 4, 1884.

John Callan's brother was Peter Callan b. March 1811 d. Aug 4, 1889.

There is also a Mary Callan d. Oct 16, 1863 (may be daughter of Christopher Callan- as there is also a Baby Callan nearby as well).

They are all buried in St. Andrews Cemetery in Grand Rapids MI.

My 3rd great grandfather was Christopher J Callan b. 1845 d. 1928. I wonder if he is connected to this family but not sure how. If anyone has information I would appreciate the help.

John, Mary, Edward, and Peter are all buried together. Nearby is Christopher Callan with his wife and a couple of their children.
I have relatives in Ardee, Co Louth who are Callans, one 'John Callan' is my GGGRANDFATHER b. approx 1835 d. Nov 1895. I know he married 'Anne Keelan' who died 8th March 1919. They lived in Irishtown. I believe they had 4 children: John, Mary, Laurence (Lal) and Catherine(Katie). Laurence died in U.S.A in 1968 and was born 1887. Any connections?

As you indicated, Tom Rue made the McGuire-Callan connection. That is the only Callan connection in my line, so (having over 23,000 folks in my file, I haven't spent a lot of time tracking down other connections.

I spent two rainy days at Mt Hope/St. John's Cemetery in Lambertville, but did not see Patrick and Ann. Interestingly, there is a Catherine with Michael McGuire and Mary Callan. Guess I'll have to visit Lambertville again.

The names I do have from Mt. Hope are:

Nan E. 1906-1985
Harry J. 1879-1966
Emma C. 1882-1964
Mary A. 1919-
Joseph M. 1874-1940
Julia abt 1823-1878 (wife of John)
James abt 1851-1863 (son of John and Julia)
Hugh
Elizabeth
Ann
Margaret
Mary (McGuire) Callan 1829-1909

If I find anything new, I'll be sure to pass it along, and hope you all do the same.

Best Regards,
Mike

Re: Callan or Callen of Woonsocket, Rhode Island

Mr. Lynch:

I am not related to the Callans (that I know of), but my paternalGrandmother, Ann Callahan, daughter of Philip Callahan and Mary Smith of Coolkill, emigrated to the U.S. when in her early teens (circa 1890s). She lived on a farm just down the lane from the old Callan property -- next to and across from Maeve Lynch's present home. Her brother (my Great Uncle) Michael, I am told, passed away in the still existing (but derelict) cottage across from Maeve that is currently owned by one of the Fays.

I have been trying to get in touch with you for the past few years, as Jimmy Lynch of Coolkill told me to contact you, indicating you might have more information about my family. My grandfather was Hugh Mulligan, brother of Owen, from Kilnaleck and Crosserlough. His wife, my grandmother above, went to Woonsocket, R.I. at around 12-13 years of age and, I am told, worked as a domestic for the Callan family (having been brought over by her older sister).

My wife and I have been to Cavan a number of times over the past six years and have obtained all that is available record-wise in Cavan (including reading Luke Callan's self-penned "Ireland After 40 Years"). My Cavan lineage is the Mulligan, Callahan, Smith, and Lynch families.

Needless to say, I would be grateful to make contact with you ...

(I live in Indiana and may be reached at hb1927@gmail.com. Jimmy Lynch (Coolkill) gave me the impression that you live in Virginia)
Sincerely,

Tom Mulligan
