It has been six years now since your original posting. Have you come upon any further details for your CALLANAN family? I have discovered that my Michael Callanan, was born, most likely, in 1839 rather than 1842, based on a short list of family birthdays written by his grand-daughter before her passing. I found it among papers in my mother's house last summer. ...Kathleen
I also found his ship at the port of New York City in August 1851. He travelled at age 12 as a laborer with no other CALLANAN's on the ship's list.

Anyone have info. on a Mary A. Callanan that married Joseph J. Sullivan somewhere between 1916 and 1919 in MA? 1920 Census has them living in Cambridge, MA on Richdale Ave. These are my great grandparents. I can trace him, but she is a mystery. Rumor is she died young and her children were sent to foster homes (or relatives). I know she was born in Ireland approx. 1893, came to the US in 1910 and was Naturalized in 1916, that is all I know.

John,

We're a different Callanan clan but here is the connection: When my uncle William Callanan from Kilconnell died his widow Alice Sweeney married Johnny Callanan, Fianna Fail politician. Johnny was now step-father to my two cousins (Joe and Marjorie) and I remember he brought us to a session in the Irish parliament (Dail) once where he was speaking about the farming community and price of livestock. When Alice passed away I had no further contact with that side of the Callanan clan. I will see what I can find out via his step children, one of which is called Joe but not the same as Johnny's son Joe who was also in politics for a while. There may be two sets of Callanan graves in Kilconnell abbey.

Frank

Hello Frank,

My Callanan'a lived out by Lough Calla in what is known as Callanan House. One of the daughters, Anne married a Frank Hillary, also from Kilconnell, in the 1840's. A present descendant, Joe Callanan, was a member of the Dail from this District. Our Callanan's are also buried in Kilconnell Abbey, but it was closed for work when I visited there a number of years ago. Joe Callanan never answered a letter I wrote him about the family. Anyway.....

Good luck in your searches.
John

Dear Frank, My research on Kilconnell, Galway, Ireland took place quite a few years ago in Dublin, Kilconnell and at the Mormon's Genealogy Library in Salt Lake City, UT.

The 1837 Tithe Assessment & Applotment of Kilconnell Parish is from the Mormon's Library. I only copied two pages that covered the Townland of "Trust". I do not see any Callanans on either page.

In case you are not familiar with the Mormon's Genealogy Library ... it is open to the public, there are no fees except for copying documents. I visited the SLC library every year for about 20-years. Their collections of genealogical related sources is awesome. I am not a Mormon but found the staff very friendly and helpful. If you can't get to SLC, they also have small libraries in many, many cities, and the microfilms can be ordered from SLC for you to use at the local library for about three months for a small mailing fee. I'm quite sure you can order the Tithe Assessment to use at your nearest Mormon library.

Another idea is to hire a professional Ireland researcher in SLC and have him/her do the research for you at the library. I think the library can give you a list of available researchers and their field of interest.

Sorry I can't be of more help.
DuzKelley

Hello Kay. I came upon this thread and wonder if you have any information in the 1837 Kilconnel Tithe Assessment you mention. We have not been able to trace back much beyond grandfather: Joseph CALLANAN (postmaster and draper, Kilconnel), Born May 24 1872; parents: Margaret (Mary) Forde and John Callanan (shopkeeper, Kilconnell) details unknown (possibly married in 1858). I was told that there were 2 distinct Callanan clans in Kilconnell. Our's is buried in the large grave within Kilconnel abbey (I have a photo) and related to Callanan's who still live in the post office in Kilconnell. Our side of the family moved to Dublin. I then moved to Missouri.

Any information on John Callanan or Margaret Mary Forde born circa 1840's appreciated

Frank Callanan

She had lived in this city for over 50 years and had a large acquaintance. She was a woman of fine character and was a devoted member of St. Mary's cathedral.

Four sons, John J., Thomas F., Michael and Edward M., all of this city, survive. The funeral will be held Monday morning at 8:30 from the house, 11 Kiah street, and at 9o'clock from St. Mary's cathedral.

Hi Lorraine,
Sorry for not replying sooner. I have sent you an invite to my Ancestry tree. The Thomas Callanan that went to South Africa may have been one of Patrick's Brother's but I will need to look into this. How are you related to Thomas Martin Callanan and Violet Owen? I think that the Margaret O'Dea may be a miss print on the certificate as Margaret Athy's mother's name is Margaret O'Dea otherwise O'Dea could be Margeret Athy's middle name. I would need to look at the certificate to try and figure this one out. I am in Dunedin, NZ and would love to compare notes with you. Where are you? Regards Mary-Jane

I can only find one person with this name he is a child of Patrick and Margaret Elizabeth ATHY. On the marriage certificate for Thomas and Violet he has his parents as Patrick and Margaret O'DEA. I do have an obit for Simon Athy CALLANAN and also a newspaper write up of his wife Patricia CALLANAN. Does any of this connect. I need to establish if there are two Thomas Martin CALLANAN. Family story has it that my one came to NZ from South Africa and returned there but is this correct. Where are you?
Lorraine

Hello Tony, thank you for taking the time to reply. I thought I had found my man as the son of Patrick CALLANAN and Margaret ATHY and quite alot of information on him here in New Zealand. This is the only THomas Martin CALLANAN I have been able to find. He was the second husband of my ancestor Violet Lilian BRUCE (PALMER) However when I got their marriage certificate it said that Thomas Martin was born in NZ, his father was Patrick CALLANAN, a farmer, and mother was Margaret O'DEA, not ATHY. Thomas was 31 years old and a Bachelor, Farmer. If you can throw any light on these fold I would be delighted. I do not know where ttthe parents came from ans so far have nt found them on a shipping list. Thank you, Lorraine
To complicate matters the only Margaret O'DEA I have found was married to a Martin WOOD.

Hi Cousin!

Yes! We are third cousins three times removed! I had this John in my tree and with 1805 as his death date (but no birth date) and with no spouse or children and no reference to the alias. My information was from another American cousin but with no ultimate source.

I have emailed you privately so we can share more. Of general interest is this notice which presumably is about the settlement of his will? Would there therefore be a record somewhere of the outcome?

Richard Callanan
London, UK

Many thanks Timothy for posting this. So useful to have documented evidence for the use of an alias.

This John is part of a branch of my family for which our earliest records go back to Cornelius Callanan (1730-1803) of Racecourse near Thurles, Co Tipperary, Ireland. A grandson of his with the same name emigrated to Buffalo NY in 1851. This John is a son of William (1858-1934) (in turn a son of the immigrating Cornelius and presumably the William in the notice). William's wife was a Margaret O'Brien (1868-1946) - the Margaret Callinan in the notice?

The Callinan spelling is a simple variant common in Ireland, particularly in the branch in County Clare. (The name in Ireland is usually pronounced with two syllables - Cal-nan - so that middle vowel gets no emphasis. I have no idea where the Calden might come from! This will stimulate further fascinating searches!

The notice seems to imply that this John Callanan was separated from his family at the time of his death. (Maybe the alias is linked to that?)

I'd love to hear from others connected to the family. I have just initiated a Callanan DNA project for anyone interested in either surname or other variants. I am anxious to see what links there are between various Callanan families in Ireland and Callanans who emigrated in the 19th Century throughout the world - please contact me.

Richard Callanan
London, UK

John Callanan (AKA John Calden) died in Buffalo, NY

I believe that the following pertains to John Calden/Callanan, who was born in Irelend about 1827, and died in Buffalo, NY about 1905. If anyone has interest, or can explain the surname variations of Calden/Callanan/Callinan, please reply.

The Buffalo Express, Thursday morning, June, 22, 1905, page 11 contained the following notice:

Citation for Judicial Settlement

The people of the state of New York, to Catherine Callinan, Mary O’Loughlin, Margaret Callinan, Anna Callinan, John Callinan, William Callinan, Mary Wallace Callinan, James Callinan, if he be living, and if dead his widow, heirs-at-law and next of kin, executors, administrators, assignees, devisees and grantees, if any there be, all of whose names, ages and places of residence are unknown and cannot after due diligence be ascertained, and all persons claiming to be such persons or corporations interested in the estate of John Callinan, otherwise known as John Calden and John Callanan, late of the City of Buffalo in the county of Erie, state of New York, deceased, as creditors, legatees, next of kin, widow.
You, and each of you, are herby cited, notified, and required to be and appear before the Surrogate of said County of Erie, at the Surrogate’s office, on the 31st day of July, 1905, at ten o’clock in the forenoon of that day, then and there to attend the judicial settlement of the account of John Major as executor of the will of said deceased. And that if any of the above named persons are infants, that they then and there show cause why a Special Guardian should not be appointed to appear, represent and act for them in the proceeding for such judicial settlement.
In testimony whereof, we have caused the seal of our Surrogates Court to be hereunto affixed.
(L.S.) Witness Hon. Louis W. Marcus, Surrogate of our said County of Erie, at Buffalo, N.Y. this 9th day of June, 1905 LOUIS B. HART
Clerk of the Surrogate Court
The account to which this proceeding relates is now on file in the office of the Surrogate and may be examined by any person or corporation interested.
Jan 1909, American Civil War veteran
children:
Theodore, 1855-1925
Arthur A.
William C.
Johanna, m.Charles Pardy
Addie, m. George S. Ladue
Helen, aka Nellie, m. unknown Hoyt
John M. b. 1862/3, d. 3 Feb 1913
children:
William
Allen
Allice

I don't know of a connection between these Callanans and my
Callanans and suspect that there is none. The time frame
and location seem plausible for Patrick A. to be the son of
your Blayney.

The newspaper accounts that I extracted from a\re available
at http://news.nnyln.net

Hope this helps,
Mike

Blayney Callanan/Kinsale to Hampden Mass.

Blayney was the son of Danial and Vincentia. He was born in Dunderrow, Kinsale, Co Cork. He migrated to the states after 1846. Are there any Callanans out there who descend from Blayney and Bridget (Casey)
