My name is Paul Calogaras and I believe that George Calogaras may be my uncle born in Greece and travelled to New York. My father Alexander Nicholas Calogaras was born in Wellington, New Zealand son of Nicholas Calogaras (my grandfather). I would like to know if anyone has any more information, especially what part of Greece the family came from. Cheers, Paul Calogaras

Thank you for the information, however, I imagine there were many men named George Callas or Calagaras and other similar greek names that were shortened to Callas. I haven't been able to find any definitive info about my George. Why do you think this is the man I'm looking for. If it is, I'm very excited!

Thank you again!

My grandfather's name was James A. Callas, with it being shortened from Kalageropoulis when he arrived. He too came over in about 1910, at the age of 14. His mother had died and he and his step mother did not get along very well so he left with a few cousins. I recall hearing something about Ellis Island and from there he came to Canada, montreal area before settling in Kingston Ontario where he opened a restaraunt called 'Callas Restaraunt'. Think they could be related??

Sorry it took so long to answer.

Do you have more information about your Callas family? Do you know when your relatives came into Ellis Island and could you find out what the Greek name actually was before it was changed to Callas.

I have been struggling for over three years to find any information about my Greek relatives and have found so little. Please email me again or call me at 812.462.8249 during the day.

Where are you from? Do you know if any of your ancestors lived in Indiana. I thought perhaps George came into Ellis Island and then migrated to Chicago, IL, then to Indiana but I can find nothing on him in Indiana with the exception that he was listed in the 1920 City Directory. I have pictures of him and postcards he sent to my Grandmother but nothing else. I'd love to find out more about your family history.

Thanks for your time,
Sharon Shake

Kay:

Hi and thank you for emailing me about your family history. It is encouraging to know that at least some Callas family members were known to be in the Indiana area.

I have information that shows George Callas lived in Indianapolis in 1921. I have postcards that cause me to believe George lived in Molene IL around the early 1920's. I can't find anything about him after that. I have pictures of George but after three years of research, have come up with nothing.

It would be very nice if we could put some connection to our families. Please let me know what I can do. I have no other information about his family. george supposedly was engaged to marry my Grandmother Lolla and the marriage was called off for some reason.

Are you connected with the church?
Seeking Knowledge

Hello, My name is James Callas, I was born to James M Callas and Leslie Carlile. I have been told that I have a great deal of relative family that I never got a chance to meet due to family difficulties. My grandfather, on my fathers side, used to spell his name Kallas. The reason I write this is to find out if anyone with this last name can tell me if they are or if they know of these people. I am a United States Marine currently stationed at Ft. Huachuca AZ to learn Morse Code. I ask because family is important to me and finding out ones roots is even more important. The family I belong to is now alittle far spread. I am told that some live in UTAH, although this information is old. I have an aunt who now has the married name of Mcdonald. I implore any who read this to respond, whether the answer is wither yes or no does not matter. Thank you for your time,
Semper Fidalis,
Lance Corporal James Callas USMC

Does anyone know anything about a man named Louis Jim Callas? He immigrated from Porin, Greece...year unknown...and moved to Beatrice, Nebraska where he worked on the railroad. He barely spoke English and people thought he was saying "Collins" when he told them his name so it was accidentally changed to Collins on all of his legal papers. He married a lady named Elmira Helen Schultz and they had 2 daughters, Phyllis and Anastaria. I would really like to help my husband with his family tree so ANY information would be greatly appreciated!

I know that I have family in Athens (on my grandfathers side) and my grandmother was from a poor family in Greece. I have many second cousins and a great uncle named George.
Sharon,
This may seem really far fetched, but my grandfather James Kalley was from greece. he died when my father was very youn. My father always said our name had originally been Callas. Dad also thought his father might have had a brother named George. I can]t find any records for my grandfather, but his marriage certificate to my grandmother, (she also died when my fathr was very young)he stated he lived in Indianapolis in 1914. After marrying my grandmother they moved to Il. when she died Dad and his fater moved back to Muncie In where we have lived every since . Again I think this may be far fetched, but do you think we could be related?
