Re: Callen Chronicles

The Clarion County Historical Society in Clarion, PA has a copy of The Callen Chronicles. The following is condensed from that book -- "John stood over 6 feet tall. There is a photo of John H. taken in the fall of 1861 in the uniform he originally wore when he was a new enlistee (in the Civil War) in the United States Sharpshooters = Company C, 2nd Regiment. Later he was uniformed in the standard dark blue coat and accessories of the Union army; family tradition holds that a photo existed of him in the Union uniform that was taken while he was stationed in Washington, D.C. with the Army on the Potomac.
I have his Cap. It shows U.S.S.S. for United States Sharpshooters. This was a small group formed by a man named Berdan, and is often referred to as The Berdan Sharpshooters. They were credited with having a great influence in saving the day at Gettysburg.
there is a "small (pocket sized) book given to John Harvey by ...Jane (Shadle) Callen when he went to war. It is signed "Grandmother Callen." The book contains an appropriate Biblical verse for each day of the year. John Harvey carried this little book in his uniform breast pocket through the War. It is blood stained (his blood), but is in beautiful condition."

Referring to "I have his cap..." I do not know who "I" is unless it is the author of the Chronicles. I have a xerox copy of the pages from the Chronicle about the Patrick Callen lineage. If you have other questions, about this line, please feel free to contact me. I understand that since your original post is years old, you may no longer need this inf0.

In behalf of the Callen forum, thanks to Joan for her posting on Thomas J. Callen, Medal of Honor recipient, Indian wars, (this was the 1876 battle of Little Big Horn in which Custer had his last stand).
My curiosity got the best of me, so I researched for more info about Thomas. Following are my findings.

Here's a website showing his tombstone:
http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_af/calle...
Other websites show his birthplace as County Louth, Ireland, born 12 July 1853, died 5 May 1908 buried at East Orange NJ, Holy Sepulcher cemetery.

Here's 1880 census which very likely is Thomas:
ED 101 Billings, Dakota Territory pg 46d:
Callan, Thos J age 31 born Ire, occ: Soldier USA; wife Lizzie age 22 born NY, then other soldiers are listed, living with them. Previous and following pages shows more soldiers.

Following may be Thomas in 1900 census.
NJ > Essex> 1wd Orange, pg 143
Callen, Thomas age 42 born Aug 1857 (not very clear image) born NJ, parents born Ire; wife Catherine age 37 born Jan 1863 NJ; sons William 20; James 17; Thomas 15; Rufus? 13; John 11; Catherine 11; Frank 6, all children born in NJ.

Any descendants of Thomas, please email me.

Bill Morrow, Group Administrator Callen DNA testing project

Thanks Debbie!!! It looks as if you're a gold mine of information. I think you know more about my family than we do. My email is jhoffman@halff.com. I currently live in the Dallas area, but go home to Gulfport several times a year. My mom is real excited about all of this. She plans to contact other older family members to see what they know.

I'm not sure about which Callen daughter took over the postmaster position. However, we think we know the house they lived in and ran the post office. It was spared by Katrina.

My mom is trying to figure out the twin questions. She thinks they went by nicknames instead of Martha/Mary.

We'll figure out Frank P Ross' birth/death dates when we go to the cemetery. Yes, he re-married after Susan died and had several children. Susan and Frank had Stephen Henry and Rose (I don't know much about her yet). Stephen Henry Ross is my great-grandfather. Not sure of his birth yet, but he died in June 1966 just before I was born. He had 4 children George, Stephen, Susan, and Kathleen.
Susan Ross Floyd and Kathleen Ross are buried in St. James. Kathleen never married. George Ross is my grandfather and my mothers father.

Stephen H Ross is buried in the Biloxi cemetery which was significantly damaged from Katrina. He married Georgiene Redding who is buried there with at least 2 more Reddings. One is her father George Redding. I hate to say it but a lot of coffins floated out of the ground during the storm. I believe there's made it okay.

As far as other surnames, my mom has mentioned Pierce and Gray (George Ross married Helen Gray - my grondmother). I'll ask her about others. Thank you so much for your help. I look forward to hearing back from you. Johnny

Debbie,

We don't know anything about Susans grandparents. Everything seems to begin with Stephen Callen Sr., as far as in the Miss. City area. We think he was among the first to migrate to Miss. City along with the Pierces', Ross' (?). A lot of Scotch-Irish, Welsh, etc. migrated there because it was planned to be a sea port with railroad connections, etc. However, Gulfport ended up with it all in the late-1800s. Gulfport annexed Miss. City in 1968. I have asked St. James Church for some historical info. too. Apparently, Stephen Sr. was one of the founding members of the church. My mom said Frank Pierce Ross is buried in the old Miss. City cemetery in Gulfport. We are going to go out there and look for him and others the next time I'm home in Gulfport. I wasn't able to find the cemetery on-line yesterday. I think very little is known about it, but it does exist.

What do you know about Stephen Callen Sr. being involoved Miss. politics and as a postmaster. I saw some previous postings about it. Do you know if he was involved in the Civil War? There was a lot of union activitiy between New Orleans and Mobile during that time. Is what you know from the "Callen Chronicles"? If it is, how can I get a copy or of any other documents you may have?

Talk to you soon. Johnny

Hey Debbie - it's St. James cemetery. St. James cemetery used to be the location of St. Patrick's Church (built in 1868). There's a historical chronology on the church web site www.stjamescatholicchurch.com/history.

The first St. James Church was on Teagarden Road. My mother/father were married there. It was destroyed by a tornado in 1967. My grandparents (George/Helen) lived at 165 Teagarden at the time and I was there visiting when it hit. It spared my grandparents house for the most part, but destroyed the church. I was in a crib and got covered with glass when it hit, but not injured. Anyway, just a side note.

I'm not sure about James. I've learned about him through you. I think there's another cemetery in Hansboro, but I don't know much about it.
I wonder if that might be the Handsboro Catholic Cemetery or is that St James?

The reason I ask is because according to the obit for James Henry Callen (Susan's brother), he was interred there. But the headstone in St James clearly shows his name along with his wife, Catherine Maley (1855-1918).

Which brings me to another question, did James & Catherine Maley have children? She had a brother, William L Maley who died about 1909 and obit says he was interred in Handsboro.

What a shame your mother doesn't know anything about Susan's grandparents. Appears we have reached a brick wall unless we can find some relatives of Susan & Stephen Jr's siblings. (Surnames of Pierce, O'Donnell, Wylie, Terrell).

Send me your email address and I can send the information & documents I have. Obits, pictures etc.

I have some unidentified photos that were in the ledger scrap books. Maybe your mother might know who they are or has seen the picture somewhere before.

Civil War:
Callen, Stephen Confederate Infantry 3rd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry
I never tried to trace this or get any documentation.

According to Ann Carlin Callen's obit, Stephen Callen Sr was involved in politics and was the postmaster. Obit says his daughter now has the position. Which daughter? I have no idea.

Do you know if Martha & Mary were twins? I don't have an exact date of birth for them. born abt 1864 according to the 1880 census.

Do you have Frank P Ross date of birth & death? Did he remarry after Susan's death? I also need Stephen H Ross birth & death info. Were there any other children of Susan & Frank?

I have never seen the Callen Chronicle book so no information I have comes from that source.

Also, what other surnames are you researching? When I go through the ledger scrap book again, I can look for the names. Never know what I'll find that might come in handy.

I haven't been to Gulfport since the hurricane. I know it is a mess over there. Hopefully, none of the cemeteries got destroyed.

Debbie
email: chatcalin@aol.com

Johhny,
My husband is the one related to the Callens and I'm doing the research.

He is related to Stephen Callen, Jr (Susan's brother). He was born 16 Dec 1860 and died 28 Jul 1914 in Lafayette, La. He married Johannah Conklin (born abt 1861 died 20 Mar 1934)

This has been a difficult search because only 2 of Stephen Callen Jr's children got married. My husband was never interested in his roots, therefore....he never asked any questions!! As for me, I have plenty of questions and have been searching for long distance cousins or anyone who can help me.

One of my husbands great aunts, (either a Callen or Conklin) keep 2 ledger books full of newspaper articles about family & friends. The articles start about 1875 and stop about 1930 I think. Whoever owned those ledgers cut out any little snippet from various newspapers if she knew them or if they were related. The clippings are falling apart and I need a magnifying glass to read them. But I have found some information that has been quite helpful and has solved some mysteries.

Please ask your mother if she knows who Susan's grandparents were.

Do you have a picture of the headstone in St James?
The website is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ms/msphotos/msstones/
Go to Harrison, St James Cemetery. Look under Headstones and scroll down to the Callen-Terrell marker.

That is sad about Susan's death. I thought maybe she died in childbirth since she was so young.
Anxious to hear from y'all.
Debbie

Hi Johnny

I have a photo of the headstone of the Callens that are buried in St James Cemetery, Gulfport, Ms. There are 10 names and Susan Callen Ross is one of them.

I have the obits from the newspaper for Stephen Callen, Sr & Anna Mary Carlin, James Henry Callen, and Stephen W Callen, Jr.

I have a photograph of Stephen W Callen, Jr & his wife Johannah Conklin. I also have a photograph of at least 6 of their children when they were little.

Who were Susan Callens' Grandparents?? I have no idea who the parents of Stephen Callen, Sr & Anna Mary Carlin are. Can you help? I can not go back any further than this.

Regarding Susan's siblings: Where Martha & Mary twins? Do you have any information on Martha, Mary or Annie, their spouses or children? Dates of birth or death? I have the marriage dates for all 7 children of Stephen Callen and Anna Mary Carlin.

Susan died so young....what happened? Where is Frank P Ross buried? I would like to know his dob, death and how many children they had.

Catherine Callen Terrell (Susan's sister) is buried in New Iberia, La.
I'm researching my fiance's family line. His family is directly descended from John Coleman Kalleen and continues to spell the name "Kalleen." However, I have also seen the spelling Kallene. The family believes the name was originally "Killeen" from the Co. Mayo, Ireland, but as of yet, I too have not found any records on John Coleman Kalleen's parents Andrew and Mary, or how or when they came to the U.S. (I'm assuming by ship, but have not found any passenger logs with their names). If you have a copy of John Coleman Kalleen's marriage certificate, could you please email me a copy? I am planning a trip to Ireland and am going to try to continue the search over there. Thanks.

Re: Curious about Callan origins

I am a Callen from Canada, my father was born in Belfast as was his father. In searching for my family roots I discovered a village in Ireland, County Kilkenny by the name of Callan. The Coat of Arms of our name Callen or Callan is the same. So Callen is Irish by heritage. I found records several years ago showing Callen's being shipped off to Australia during the late 1700's to mid 1800's.

Who is your finace and how is he related? As for the marriage cert. it is a legal size document and my scanner will only do letter size so will have to send in two parts. My husband and I are leaving tomorrow for Mobile AL (we live near Tampa FL) so you might have to wait until we return for me to copy.
I would also like to plan a trip to Ireland, but until I learn more, I would have no idea what area to begin searching. Good luck on your trip.
Mary
