Re: Callicott's from Randolph Co., NC

I remember Rankin Callicutt well. He was my uncle. My father was his oldest brother, George Henry.
Rankin Dewey and Zelma McPherson Callicutt had children:
1. Helen Frances
2. Rachel Lee
3. Charles Rankin
4. Donald James
5. Bobby Ray
6. William Stafford
7. Walter Vance
8. Ned Thomas (born and died Feb. 18, 1938)
9. Joseph Wayne (born and died Mar. 27, 1940)

The multiple Pleasants and Alfreds are indeed confusing in the Callicutt/Callicott line. Needless to say all who bear that surname in Montgomery and Randolph Counties of NC are related. Rankin Dewey Callicutt's father was Alfred Harrison (his surname on his death memorial placard is shown as Callicott). Alfred and Crissie Britt Callicott/Callicutt had 5 children, the last being born 6 months after Alfred's death on November 24, 1902.

Hi, I'm Luis's neice, my mother is his sister. We live in San Diego, California. It is so nice to know that there is something found regarding our family. We're a very small family and don't know much of other relatives out there. I was wondering if you could scan me a photo of Ferran Callico... I'd love to show it to my mom.

Thanks!
~Maria

Re: John Bailey Callicotte born 1745 Virginia

Hi Rachel, And Callicott/James researchers;

Agatha Harrison was John Bailey Callicott's mother,
So the Agatha, Rachel is looking for would have to be a
daughter etc. My connection is through their son William
Callicott who married Elizabeth Ashworth? John Bailey's
father was James. Sarah James was born abt 1746 to
Thomas James and unknown. I recently found this:

COURT ORDERS - CHARLOTTE COUNTY, VA BOOK NINE 1792 - 1794

MARCH 1793
Pg 57 James Davis and Sarah his wife, formerly the widow of Thomas James, dec'd, Thomas
Hugh James and John James, sons of the sd Thomas James, dec'd, and Barkley James, infant
son of Thomas James, dec'd, by John Rawlins, his guardian, and John Callicott & Sarah his
wife, daughter of sd Thomas James, dec'd; Plaintiffs vs James Barnes, adm'r of Thomas James,
dec'd; Defendant - A suit in Chancery
It is directed and ordered that a division of the slaves named Frances, Bettie, Hannah,
Sam, James and Rosa, a child; together with the personal estate of Thomas James, who died
intestate, so far as respects the dower of the sd Plaintiff, Sarah, in the bill mentioned, be made
in a fair and equable manner, that is to say, one third of the slaves, and one third of the personal
estate, as her dower, the remaining two thirds in equal division to George James, Thomas Hugh
James and John James; to John Rawlins, as guardian of Barkley James; and to John Callicotte,
in right of his wife, Sarah, all sons and daughters of Thomas James, the intestate.
And it is ordered that Mack Goode, Hillary Moseley, Edmund Moseley and Langston
Bacon, or any three of them, do make and partition an allotment thereof, and report the same to
this court.

I do believe Sarah might have been his second wife,
her maiden name is Sarah Connolly daughter of George
Connolly! That being the reason Barkley was under a
guardians care and I wonder if the John Rawlins was kin to
first wife? I have not done any research on the family being
in NC yet and just recently found out about Charlotte Co. VA
connection for this Callicott and James family!

Evie

Cordialmente
milton

PS: Mis coordenadas son: Helios Milton Callicó
Estudio: Pte.
Actually this may be a nephew as none of Daniel'c children were not old enough to live on their own. (John was born in abt 1848 and his daughter Mary was born about 1850). The rest of his children were not born. I will have to check and see if Daniel had any siblings.

Thanks,
Amy

Greetings.
Would Daniel Murphy be related (father?) to a John James Murphy who lived in St.Louis,MO., and later moved to Memphis,TN.,around 1850,becoming a prominent businessman in the city? He died 1892.
He was married to a Mary Ruth Mitchell who had family members in Galena,ILL.(Including Murphy members?)

Re: Callicott's from Randolph Co., NC

I grew up in Randolph County and the Callicutt/Callicott line has been there at least as far back as Pleasant Callicott, a distinguished Civil War veteran and can be found in the 1850 Census as the son of William Callicott. Pleasant, son Alfred, and grandson Rankin are in my line and all can be found with both Callicutt and Callicot and a few other variations. My father, Ricky still lives in Randolph County. I now live in the Charlotte area.

Based on what I gather from my research, my Great Grandfather Rankin Dewey, was orphaned when his father Alfred passed c. 1902 and can be found in an orphanage in the 1910 Census. He appears twice in the 1920 census as Rankin Callicott, a soldier stationed in Charleston and St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. In 1922 he married Zelma McPherson in Randolph County and they evntually had by my count 6 children, the youngest being William Stafford, my grandfather. The 1930 Census shows him with the last name of Callicutt, which I still bear.

Oddly, in Rankin's 1920 census sheet, it shows him stationed with a James D Stafford. I wonder if James was the inspiration for my father's and grandfather's middle name of Stafford?

The tricky spot in my research was in finding multiple Pleasant and Alfred Callicotts, one line from Randolph and the other from Montgomery.

I know you posted this a few years ago, but I hope this helps.

I am looking for the parents of a John Callicott. The information I have is that he was born between 1630-1650, Isle of Wight, Virginia. He died about 1717, Essex County Virginia. He married a Rachel or Mary Hopkins, born abt. 1683. They were married about 1708 in Essex County, Virginia. The above information has not been proven that it is correct but I would appreciate any information on him.

Hi William: We haven't talked in several years. Your Callicot's are from MS aren't they? My David J. Callicott's father was a William C. Callicott (born in Ala 1837) and his father was Thomas Bailey Callicott (NC). My David Joseph Callicott siblings were:Lucy, James, Mary, William, and Viola. On the 1900 Oklona (MS) Chickasaw Co. it is written as Calicut but my relatives spelled their name Callicott.

I have corresponded with one of Lucy Callicott's descendants but have no other information on any of the others. It was my understanding that James moved to Arkansas after 1920's. So many James Callicott's hard to trace.

Sarah Jones

I've had a very difficult time tracing my Callicott ancestry. My grandfather & grandmother separated and then she heard he died (before 1926).
Unfortunately, I was over 50 years old before I got the genealogy bug and some of my older relatives are deceased. My grandfather's name was David Joseph Callicott, his father was named Will Callicott (I guess for William).
He was living in Alabama with his daughter Viola Jones in 1920 (83 or 84 yrs of age) and her husband was Curtis Jones. I believe they lived in Mississippi before that. For a short time my mother, her sister and brother were put in an orphanage and Mrs Jones got them out. They lost contact and my Aunt Esther doesn't remember much. The children's names were Nell, Esther and Joseph Andrew. Do you know anyone I could contact who could assist in locating names of acestors?

Thanks,

Sarah Jones

Rachel, I am descended from Samuel Wade Callicott Sr. thru his son Samuel Wade Jr. Samuel Wade Jr married Mary Houston in Gallatin Co. Samuel Wade died one month after enlisting in civil war. HE died of measles on board hospital ship at St. Louis. Mary later married Milton Patillo and they moved family to Ozark Co., MO. Mary and Samuel's son Alvin was my grandfather. I have a picture of sons of Marshall Callicott, who was son of Washington Callicott. The two sons have their hand on an old powder gourd, which the back of picture stated was Beverley's gourd which he used in REv War under Geo Washington. The son's names were Robert and Buddy (Wade).
I had wondered who the Mary Callicott that married Joseph Riley belonged to. Glad to find out. Samuel Wade Jr's sister Agnes (Aggie) married Isaac Riley about the same time.
will share information with you.
Wadene Callicott Bennett
wadeneben2@aol.com

The Mary that was living with Samuel and Mary Callicott in 1860 was the daughter of Samuel's deceased brother Claiborn H. Callicott who died Dec 1853, leaving widow Juliet and children Ellen, John and Mary. Ellen and John lived with Samuel's brother John A. Callicott in 1860 and Mary was with Samuel. I have Mary as marrying Benjamin Hill May 31, 1867. Samuel died in civil War Dec 1862 and Mary remarried in early 1870's to Milton Patillo and I have guardianship papers for Milton becoming guardians to Samuel and Mary's children, Alvin and his sister Martha.
Claiborn's son John married june 12, 1872 to Mary Murphy. I don't have marriage for Ellen.
Wadene Bennett

I have a mystery on my hands about the family of Francis Marion and Harriet Callicott. Francis was son of John Bailey and Ellender (Ellen) McGill. In the book "Callicott Connections" by Col. John Callicotte in 1984, the family of Francis was as follows:
children: Albert Asbury, Abraham Lincoln, Lulu,
Melvin Eugene, Frances Aurora, Sarah Ellen Callicott, Josephine Inez, Mary "May" Eliza, Jose Columbus, Annie, Amy, Daniel Kent, Halo Naomi, Paul Marion.

IN the book, it states that Harriet died Aug 16, 1884 in Carneiro, Kansas then Francis moved to Colorado where he remarried, and later moved to Oregon where he died.

The mystery is that when I searched the 1880 census for Iowa and Kansas for Francis and Harriet, I can not locate them, but In Ness County, Kansas 1880, I find a household with Charles Callicott age 36,as head and wife Mary A. age 36, and children Asbury, Melvin, Sarah, Lulu, Mary, Joseph, Daniel, all the same ages that Francis's children would have been.

I also have found 1880 census record in Fort Collins, Larimar Co, Co. with a William Collicott age 36 and wife Harriet E, age 35 with the same named children. I am beginning to wonder if Francis and Harriet were devorced..
I have tried all kinds of spellings in my research. I find Francis in Fort Collins, Larimar Co, Colorado in 1900,with second wife Alma, and in 1920 in Oregon.

If anyone can clear this up for me I would really appreciate it. I am in process of trying to clean up my research notebook by getting all the census records I can. I know that the 1880 census was not out when John wrote the book, and he relied on info from his correspondents.
Wadene Callicott Bennett
wadeneben2@aol.com
Get on Yahoo.com and type the following name in the search window. John Bailey Callicoatte. There you will find links to other family members associated with John Bailey. There are a lot of boxes that say "NOTE". Click on these to find additional info on that person.Agatha was a Harrison before she married John Bailey. She was a member of one of the families that traveled together to North Carolina from Virginia. All I do when looking for family info is to type a known name in the search window of any search engine website. Good luck. John Bailey Callicott was my 5th Great Grandfather. John Bailey was a captain in the Virginia Militia during the Revoluntionary War under Washington's command and was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, Virginia in 1781.

Barry

Thanks for the rapid reply. Do you have any info on Mary and Benjamin Garrett Hill ? It seems they left the area, there is no trace of them in the 1880 census. It is also interesting My 3rd Great Grandfather Ferdinand Hill, who was Garrett Hill's Brother, also married a Murphy. He married Ellen Murphy may 18, 1878, She was daughter of Daniel Murphy and Mary Anna (Polly) Battill, they had a daughter Mary born 1851.
Garrett and Ferdinand were Civil war orphans. Their Father William R. Hill died in Jefferson Barracks hospital, St. Louis 23 Feb 1862.Leaving his Widow Parthenia and seven children as orphans.
Thanks, Roy Hill

I have a Callicott connection that seems to be connected somehow. I have a Mary Ann Callicott age 21 in 1870 census
who married Benjamin Garrett Hill May 31 1867 in Gallatin County. I find them in the 1870 Gallatin County Census Township 8 Range 9 right next to your W. C. Callicott Family. Mary A. Callicott is in the 1860 Census same location as 12 year old daughter of Samuel and Mary Callicott. They are next to a Harrelson Family and the Washington Callicott Family. I can't find Benjamin Garrett & Mary A. Hill in any other census. Any info would help, thank you.
