E. Callier

I have a letter dated 1854, Clarke Co, AL, from E. Callier. I have a pix attached here. E. is saying he wants to go to Gainestown. A little research reveals Gainestown as a fairly small town in Clarke Co. on the Alabama River. It appears from a geographic standpoint, E. almost could walk.

There is talk here about a plantation named Restwell(?), with a lovely picture. Another researcher has identified a plantation named Callier's Hill or New Canaan that was founded in about 1800 by a Callier.

Who is E., or is this really J.S.? What was the plantation's name? Were there two Callier families in the area?

I'm assuming E. was being picked up at the family plantation and transported down the Tombigbee and then up the Alabama- except I really do not where the family plantation is.

No need to answer, but if you do, thank you!

Thanks,

Craig

Callier family that came from Talbot Co. GA to Tx

Hi,
I am researching the Callier family that came to Texas prior to 1860 from Talbot Co., GA.

Thomas & Mary Eleanor (Williams) Callier had a son named Richard P. Callier. He married Lucy Ann (Kookegee?) Keockegee and they had two sons; Frank Capers Callier & Edward Monroe Callier.

Family legend states that Frank and Ed's father brought them to Texas prior to 1860, and that he died in a POW camp during the Civil War.

1860 Census has Richard P, Frank and Ed in Hardin Co., Tx. Not sure what happened to wife Lucy, but she is not on the 1860 census. In Dec. 1861 Richard P Callier enlisted as a private, mustered at Camp Rusk, Lamar Co., Tx, Red River Battalion, Company G, Texas 9th Infantry Regiment
Found listed as POW (not sure if he died?)

I have not found Richard Callier after 1860, assume he could have died in Civil War - this would certainly follow the family legend.

Frank C. Callier settled in Dallas, Texas and married Mary Alice Fox, they had the following children: Alice, Edward, Homer, Shirley, Emma, Frank, Mary 'Nix' & Stratton Fox Callier.
Homer Callier married 1) Dr. Gaston 2) Dr. Terrell
(Homer was my husband's great-grandmother.)
Edward married Lena ? Lena established a trust for the Dallas Speech and Hearing Center in Dallas, Tx upon her death in 1957.
Shirley married John Lewis Puterbaugh
Frank Jr. married Nadine Bowen
Stratton married Elizabeth Evangeline Mills?

Edward Callier settled in Houston County, Texas area and married Margaret Caroline ?, thier children are: Lucy, John B, Carrie? & Thomas Edward.
John B married Maud Douglass
Thomas Edward married Elizabeth Pruit

Have not seen much on these families, would like more info. or to share what I have.
I'm looking information on the family of William A. Callier and his wife Hattie who are living in Tuscaloosa in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 census years with children William A. Jr., James, and Louise. William is a druggist and Hattie is a school principal in 1930. I'm trying to find out who Hattie's parents were and what happened to these people.
Don't know if you check this, but Green "Duke" Caller was my grandfather. He had a falling out with his parents (from what I understand this was my grandmother's doing). He married Alosia Caller (my grandmother...still alive at 96!) and had two daughters (my mother was the youngest). My mother still regrets that she never got to see much of her cousins from her father's side of the family. My Grandfather died about 25 years ago of cancer. I'm wondering if you're the one (or know the one) who put together the geneology book that my mother gave me from the Caller family?

He is on the 1881 and 1901 UK censuses (I live in England). I would be interested to know what other Callear info you have. Perhaps I may be able to help you. Regards, Lorraine

Painting of Caller home "Restwell" in Alabama

I hope my little sister Tiffany doesn't get upset with me for posting this, considering she's the one who ventured to our uncle's house in Atlanta and uncovered it. But it's such a lovely painting done by Fredonia Winifred Caller ("Dixie" as she was known) of the family home, Restwell. I have attached a .JPG of the painting to this post.

On the back of the painting was a note written by her sister Sarah Chandler Caller ("Pearl" as she was known) in which she praised her sister's dedication to the work but then offered up a laundry list of critiques. Namely, that in reality Restwell was much larger than Dixie indicated, had dormer windows, and two chimneys. She also noted that the home had closets (a novelty for the time, considering the first patent for a hanger didn't come until the early 20th century!). Pearl wasn't crazy about the horse or the 2 people playing croquet, which Dixie said she added for "life".

Note: the original paiting, which was done probably in the late 1860s or early 1870s, is quite dark. I pulled it into Photoshop and brightened the image up so it's easier to see on screen.

Ernest Callear that you mentioned in the children's names is my great great grandfather. We just might have some information in common. Im trying to build backwards but did have alot of information on that area of the callears from 1880's and on too.

It's along time since you posted your info on Lillian and I'm sure you've moved on since then. The 'other' Lillian was Lillian Rose whereas your Lillian was Lillian Sarah, daughter of Isaac (16.9 1855 Willenhall, d.28.1.1936 Peoria, Illionois) who married Annie Laurie Williamsin 1881. I have found 5 other children - George Henry, Grace, Harold,Edna and Ernest all born Peoria. Mark Callier was her grandfather and is my Gt Gt Grandfather. The variations in the surname are varied and frustrating but I would be interested to hear of any otheres you have. I have got back to Robert Callear b abt 1715 Wellington, married Elizabeth.

Robert Caller, born abt 1728, in England (according to some sources) had 6 sons we know about. The sons were not consistent in the spelling of their last name. My ancester John moved to AL and spelled his name Callier. Some of his children had different spellings in their signatures.
Your line from James Caller was pretty consistent in Alabama when they signed their own names and omitted the i. When someone wrote the name in court records it usually was Caller in Alabama. I assume from this that the name was pronounced that way, and not with the accent on the last syllable. You can check the early land records in the MS Territory and see both spellings.
The spelling in NC usually was Callier and this has led to some confusion between Callier and Collier owing to the poor handwriting in records.

I assume that this is your family:
Descendants of William Marks Callier

1 William Marks Callier	b: 15 Jul 1851	d: 17 Aug 1915 in Birmingham, AL Burial: Elmwood Cem. Birmingham, AL
.. +Mary Louisa Marshall d: 09 Jan 1932 in Jefferson Co. AL Burial: Elmwood Cem. Birmingham, AL
........	2 Fredonia Caller d: in Age 16 Burial: Caller Cemetery, Clarke Co, AL
........	2 Green Duke Caller	b: Abt. 1880
........	2 Edward Marshall Caller	b: 19 Apr 1882
........	2 William Marks Caller, Jr	b: 08 May 1887
........	2 Mary William Caller	b: 18 Feb 1890

I do have more information online if you are interested. Just check for your family in Ancestry or Rootsweb.

Callers of TX and AR

Hi, everyone. I don't know if anyone still reads this forum because most of the messages are several years old. But I just started researching my family tree and have found the information gathered here quite valuable!

For what its worth, I have filled in some info about the Callers from Texarkana, AR/TX. My mother's maiden name is Caller; her father was William Ellard Caller (b.1912 in Little Rock) , son of G.D. Caller and Nellie Ellard of Alabama. I'm not sure when they moved to Texarkana and for what reason. G.D. and Nellie had another son by the name of Green Duke who moved to New Orleans. My mom doesn't remember much about him aside from the fact he hated the name Green and went by Duke.

By the way, does anyone know why there is the variation of spelling in Caller/ Callier? What I've found in my research is that my great grandfather Green Duke Caller (b. 1880 in AL) looks like he dropped the "I", as his father was William Marks Callier (b.1851 in Birmingham).

Hi Elvina,

I am very interested in your Caillier/Callier family. I am trying to find my Great-Grandmother's line...her father was Henry Callier...from France. By 1880 she is married and living in Livingston Parish. I have seen so many spellings for this last name, but supposedly my Grandmother was part Indian.

The wife you mention, Marie Louise, was her husband's name Jean? I didn't quite understand your post. My grandmother named 1 of her daughters Marie Violet and another was Helen Louise. Just wondered if you knew more about this line?

Thanks a bunch,
Carol

Your family is most likely descended from Thomas, the son of Robert Callier/Caller of Granville/Bute/Warren/ Cos. NC. Thomas left NC for GA and eventually died in Talbot Co. GA. If you read the messages on this forum, you will find a number of references to Thomas by me and others. I do believe that Thomas is the progenitor of all the Talbot Calliers. My line is through his brother John Callier who came to the MS. Terr. (which became AL) by the late 1790's. Their brother James also migrated there by the early 1800's.
Sue Moore
