Hi there Matthew?
My name is Michelle Callinan and I live in Tasmania, Australia. My father was Michael Callinan, Sir Bernards nephew. He sent us a copy of our family tree many years ago when I was extremely young. One thing I remember is the pinnacle of the family tree was Mary Noonan. Would look forward to discovering or sharing more information.
Take Care Michelle.

Dear MacWhee: I don't know if you wrote this 2nd message to me (Margaret Napier) or to one of the others in the thread of Thomas Callinan messages; however, I will respond anyway. For example, you mention that your mom is Carolyn and she had an older brother. My dad was William FitzSimons born 1907 Chicago. He did not have a sister Carolyn. His sisters were Mary Adele FitzSimons, Maire Pinn (nee FitzSimons) and Vera FitzSimons. Only my Dad and his sister Vera had children. There wasn't a Carolyn in my dad's Irish family. My Dad married my mom, Myrtle, also from Chicago. She was a Swede and she had a sister Carolyn (another Swede) who married Howard Alonzo Mateer who was in the Army and passed away during the Korean Conflict. So I had an Aunt Caroline from Chicago but she wasn't Irish.

Hi McWhee! Glad to hear from you again regarding Thomas Callinan. I, too, would be ecstatic to get the marriage info on Thomas Callinan and Mary McElligott. You don't ever have to apologize for being long-winded. The more long winded you are, the more information I get. I can be more long winded than anybody else, so let me apologize in advance. YES!! I would love for you to set me up to where I could look at your Ancestry family tree. Go right ahead!! Anyway, this might be long winded or redundant but I don't remember what I told you so far. #1 = Thomas Callinan (my great grandfather) died 1-4-1885 at the age of 42. He lived at 49th St. and Halstead in chicago Illinois. This is on record at Calvary Cemetery where he is buried. He was Margaret (Maggie) Callinan's father. Margaret Callinan was my grandmother. I am named after her. Hence my name is Margaret. She was my father's mother. If Thomas was 42 when he died, he was born around 1843 in Ireland. My dad William was born 1907 and I was born 1952. Yes, Thomas Callinan, born 1843, was my great grandfather. His daughter Margaret Callinan was born around 1872. Hope that explains how old everybody is. I am the daughter of Bill FitzSimons, son of Maggie Callinan, daughter of Mary and Thomas Callinan. I might seem active because I've been that way all my life. I don't want to let go of the chance to do anything. It's hard. I'm in a classic rock band, an Irish Celtic singing group and I sing in St. Francis Church Choir. I study the Irish Step dancing and also other dance classes. I also work full time for the Federal Government. This hard working runs in the family. The Classic Rock Band should have our 1st C.D. done prior to July 4, if you are interested in that kind of music. I will have to make my own separate C.D. of my own music because it is more folksy Celtic and doesn't really go with the rock n' roll. Hope you stay in touch. God Bless!

Hi Margaret.

I did look at the 1880 Census with the Callahans listed, but I can't make it fit with the dates that I am confident of on my tree so far.
My starting point was the 1870 Census, Chicago, Ward 8 with a family listed as the "Calnins".
Then, if you look at the 1880 Census For Chicago, you will find the same family - Minus Husband Thomas - Living at 25 Waller street, District 1, now listed as Callinan.

Interesting, too, if you scroll to the next house on the block. There is an entry for a "clatran" family, but I think they are Callahans. (it is written down like "Clahan"). They also have a Katie, Mary (maria), Nellie...and John. Just to show how common the names were..

I will rest much easier if I can find the marriage record for Thomas / Maggie. That would tie things up.

Also: I'm guessing you can't be older than me, as active as you are :)
So: is Mary McElligott actually your Great great grandmother? You had me confused on that count.

Anyway, If you want to take a look at the tree I have up on here, Let me know. I'll try to give you access on it.
Hi
The Thomas Callinan here would be my Great-Great Grandfather. I did find out quite a bit about him, and it's possible we are related. but it may be through a branch I haven't dug into yet.
The name Thomas is scattered all over the tree, and it gets confusing.
More so when you consider that on the other side of my tree, the same thing happens..I'm descended from long lines of Toms :)
I will try to not get too long winded, but it goes like this: Thomas Callinan, born 1838 in Ireland.
He had four sons, James, Joseph,Thomas, and Andrew and three daughters, Nellie, Katie, and Mary. Andrew died in childhood.
*James and Joseph are blanks to me at his moment*
Of those, I am descended from Thomas Jr. He was born in 1874, And died, I believe in 1906.
He had Four Sons: Thomas was born in 1897 and lived to 1964. That's my Grandfather. The other three sons were Byron, Andrew and James. Byron, I knew in childhood: He lived in Arizona and New Mexico.
*Andrew and James are blank slates at the moment.*

Now, your dates don't match up with anything I have, but that doesn't mean a dead end. There are still open threads on my chart regarding the male Callinans. If you want to look over what I have on here, let me know.

And: there is another Thomas Callinan in that same time frame I kept bumping into, but he moved out to Will county before the turn of the 20th century. His children were also named Thomas, James, and Mary, If I remember. Don't quote me on that, though. It's been awhile.

OK I got long winded. Sorry ;)

Hey Annie! You and I might be cousins. If so, I have tons of information for you on the descendants I know about, like me, for example. I am a singer/songwriter and I have written a new song about Mary Callinan, me great grandmother and widow of Thomas Callinan. I am in a Classic Rock Band here in Phoenix Arizona. I am also in an Irish Choir associated with the Irish Cultural Center of Phoenix Arizona. I am extremely active in anything Irish. I have studied some Irish language at the Irish Cultural Center. I also studied some voice there and am a current student of the Irish STEP DANCING!!!!My favorite. My SWEDISH cousin Duane is going to be hooking me up with ANCESTRY.COM and then you will be able to view the family tree there. It gets quite extensive. I am, of course, the great grand-daughter of Thomas Callinan of Chicago who passed away after 1880. I have the exact details of the date because he is buried in our family plot in Calvary Cemetery near Chicago Illinois. Their children that I know about positively are Maggie Callinan who married my grandfather James FitzSimons (sometimes spelled FitzSimmons). Another of their children was my great Aunt Kate who married Charlie Snyder. Kate and Charlie both died in the hospital in Chicago. I don't know if they ever had children or not. I don't know where they are buried. Research is still necessary on that. John Callinan was another child who is also buried in the family plot. John passed away prior to 1900 and he was also married. I don't know if they ever had children or not. I have his wife's name, but I can't recall right off. There was another child that was mentioned in one of the census for Mary Callinan. Maggie Callinan, my grandmother, married James FitzSimmons, my grandfather and they had 4 children: My dad, William, born 1907; Mary Adele, my aunt Vera and Maire. My aunt Maire married a Mr. Pinn, I can't recall his first name. I don't believe they had any children. Maire Pinn is buried in the family plot along with Thomas and Mary Callinan. My father, William, moved to Phoenix Arizona with his sister Maire, to take care of her because she had tuberculosis. My father stayed here in Phoenix where I was born. Maire returned to Chicago, where she is buried. My aunt Mary Adele died very young of kidney infection and is buried in the family plot where Thomas and Mary Callinan are buried. She never married. She was Beautiful. My Aunt Vera FitzSimons married a man named Maynard Bell and had one son, William Bud Bell. I am having a hard time staying in touch with Cousin Bud because he has become ill. He is a World War Two veteran still living in Illinois. Bud never married, so there are no descendants there. Aunt Vera remarried Fred Newell. Both are passed away in New York. Then there's my Dad, William, grandson of Mary and Thomas Callinan. He married my mom and had us 5 kids, Jim, John, Mike, Tom and me. We all got married and have children. I am extremely proud of my daughter and my wonderful nieces and nephews. They are beautiful and brilliant. If you care to communicate more and tell me more about yourself, I am at meowycat@cox.net. God bless and good night.

My g grandfather Michael Murphy married Honoria Callinan(1835-1902) at Cooraclare in 1857. Her father was Edmond Callinan(1794-1878) of Drumellihy. In the 1901 census Edmond's son Charles was residing in Drumellihy beside his son Patrick and family. In the Kilmacduane graveyard(see transcriptions on Clare Lib website) Edmond and son Charles erected a memorial to Edmond's wife Bridget(1800-1868).
The civil death record reveals only two Edmond Callinan (adult) deaths between 1864 and the 1901 census viz Edmond Callinan(1782-1870) and Edmond(1794-1870). Until I view the actual record I have accepted the latter as the best fit to my Callinan family. Thomas Callinan of Dangananella was also closely related to this family.

I realise this thread is very old but it wouldn't be the first time to turn up gold with an ancient post. I became interested in the marriage of Patrick Callinan and Dorcas Scales because Patrick's father was listed as Edmond Callinan. My gg grandfather Edmond Callinan lived in the townland of Drumellihy(Cunningham) near Cooraclare. There were numerous Callinans in this area, but not so many Edmonds, so possibly there is a connection.

I am trying to find my grandfather’s townland in Galway. His name was Martin Callinan and he was born in 1864. When he came to the United States he changed his name to Callahan. His father was Patrick and his mother was Bridget Hansberry. He immigrated to the United States in the early 1880’s and married Mary Hennessy from Gorteenboy, Galway in Philadelphia in 1897. His cousin, also Martin Callinan, was married to Winifred Hennessy, Mary’s sister.

Any help would be appreciated.
Dear Maurice Michael Callinan, You could possibly be related to me. My problem is you and your mother Mary Callinan are much younger than my great grandmother Mary Callinan. My great grandmother Mary Callinan was born in Ireland in December 1849. The census says she wss 9 when she came to America. Her maiden name was White and McElligott. Her death certificate lists her father as John Mcelligott. But your Callinans back in Ireland could be related to my Callinans. My great grandfather, her husband, was Thomas Callinan who was also born in Ireland and came to America. I will look up more information. I would love to connect and find out if we're related. Have a nice day! I will write more later. Thanks Margaret Napier

My name is Maurice Michael Callinan. My mother was Mary Callinan. Mary Callinan had three brothers, Bernard, Michael and Peter. Two sisters Bridget and Nancy. Mary married and moved to London where she had three children Rose Pierce, Mary Pierce and myself. James Pierce died shortly before I was born in 1945.

My mother and I immigrated to the United States in 1953 where my mother married a GI she met after WWII. Rose and Mary, who were much older remained in the UK. We spent two weeks touring Ireland last year. I look forward to hearing from you if the family history lines up.

Maurice (Mike) Callinan

Yes my brother is Richard. This is really interesting for me as I have not been able to get any other information passed Thomas and Bridget Coffey and that was only their names. I would love to know other information on my family. My email is colleen.f.hardy@hotmail.co.uk if you would prefer to use that. I see also that you use the a spelling instead of the i spelling in your surname which some of my dads siblings also did. I wonder why that is?
Look forward to hearing from you Mark and thankyou for replying to me. Colleen xx

My grandfather was Thomas Callinan who married Bridget Coffey and lived in Patricks Well Limerick. Too big a coincidence for us not to be connected. My father was Richard Callinan who was also born in Patricks Well and lived there till he came to England. Could your Michael be a father or brother to my Grandfather perhaps? I have not been able to trace any further back. As an extra one of my uncles was also called Michael (so perhaps after his uncle or grandfather maybe). Would be interested in you have any furthr messages. Colleen

Mary McElligott was my great grandmother. She married Thomas Callinan. I know of four children for sure. One was my great aunt Kate Callinan who married Charlie Snyder. One child was John Callinan who also married, I think, but I can't remember his wife's name. I think he died before 1900. I think John Callinan was born in 1865. My grandmother (my father's mother) was Maggie Callinan who married James FitzSimons (my dad's father). They lived with my great grandmother in around 1900 census on her farm in Chicago. It was a pig and chicken farm. My dad did not like pork because they had plenty of pork to eat. My dad had to clean the chicken coops. Mary Callinan also owned saloons in Chicago. My dad had to carry pails of beer for his grandmother. Please respond to me. I have much to tell of Thomas and Mary Callinan's descendants. I want to learn more about their ancestors: i.e. John McElligott, who would be my great great grandfather. It is on my great grandmother's death certificate. Thank you.
Dear Callinan: I am a Callinan descendant. I am trying to find out where my Callinan's came from. I know my great grandfather Thomas Callinan was born in Ireland, came to America and married my great grandmother Mary White McElligott. She was born around December 1849 in Ireland also. They settled in Chicago Illinois and had 4 children. Three children were John Callinan, Maggie (my grandmother) and Kate. John died I think prior to 1900 as did Thomas. My great grandmother Mary White McElligott Callinan passed away April 1925. Maggie Callinan married my grandpa Jim FitzSimons. Maybe you can help me. I am trying to contact Tom@McWhee.com because he is researching my great grandparents. There's lots of descendants. Maggie Callinan had Jelly cousins. Please contact me at meowycat@cox.net. Bye and have a nice day.

Dear Thomas Callinan27, My great grandparents were Thomas Callinan and Mary McElligot (also possible White) of Chicago, both born in Ireland but not sure where (what county). I have much to tell about this family but I don't have their ancestry. Just about their descendants. I know grandmother had Jelly cousins. My Dad once told me one of the Jelly's (I think it was Art Jelly) was Constable of Cary (Kerry??) but I don't know if that was in Illinois or in Ireland. On the 1900 Census, Mary Callinan (my great Grandma) is a widow having 4 children, but only 3 living. I know for sure about 2 living: Maggie and Kate. Kate married Charlie Snyder and Maggie married my grandfather Jim FitzSimons. John Callinan, one of Mary's children had already passed away. The 3rd living child might be that Andrew Callinan that Tom@Mcwhee.com talks about, but I cannot reach Tom@McWhee. My Mary Callinan is definitely the one who passed away April 1925 in Chicago Illinois. The death certficate lists my grandmother Margaret FitzSimons as the informant. Please reply. Thanks. Hopefully we are related and we can help each other research more. Thank you. Margaret Napier, Callinan descendant

Dear McWhee: I think you are an answer to my prayers. My great grandfather was Thomas Callinan. He was married to my great grandmother Mary McElligot (also possibly White). My great grandmother's death certificate lists her father's name as John McElligot. It does not list her mother's name. I know they both immigrated from Ireland, but I am not sure which county, etc. The Death Certificate for Mary Callinan states possibly Meath County. I believe I found my Callinan family in the 1880 Census in the Lake Township of Chicago Illinois, with the misspelled last name of Callahan. It shows Thomas Callahan, 40, Mary Callahan, 37, John Callahan (my uncle) 15, Kati Callahan, (my aunt) 13 and Maggie Callahan, my grandmother, age 7. Please get in touch with me. My name is Margaret Napier, meowycat@cox.net. God bless. Maybe we can figure this out. I have much to tell.

My father's family lived in warrenville. His name was thomas carol callinan, then his father, my grandfather was also thomas callinan. About the only thing I recall about my great grandfather was that he had been killed in prohibition as a chhicago cop and my grandfather had to step-up to support the family in his early teens. My father thomas carol callinan ran from warrenville each day of school to napperville on the railroad tracks. Because of the years of this and the strict and perfect stride he became the states mile champion and recieved a track scholarship to Drake university. But college wasn't his thing. At first he worked for the railroad, then the coastguard, and then finally ended up at the phone company for the next 27 years. He met my mother at the phone company when she was 19 an operator They married soon dad was 27 and I was born 9 month's later. Eleven months after that my sister Laurie jayne was born, were what they call Irish twins. For 9 days each year were the same age. Were like potatoes and steak. About for years later we welcomed the latest and greatest bundle of joy our little sister, Leslie sue.

Many of the local records were wiped out, but I have a census and pretty good documentation on him...mainly after he died. Had Seven children and died in 1877. Wife Mary McElligott.

Let me know if this (at least the immigration part) Matches.

Thanks

tom@macwhee.com

I have been looking for info on this Thomas Callinan, I know he was Married to a Mary Margaret (Maggie) McElligott and living in Chicago as of 1870. Born around 1838 in Ireland. This comes from The 1870 and 1880 census, and Mary's Obit and death cert from 1925

The trail has gone cold before 1863, except that I found a remote possibility that he emigrated through Boston 1846-1849 with an older Brother, Bart, and younger sister through family lore, that he emigrated as a child, and that he died in 1877, Probably in Chicago. I have nothing to trace him back to Ireland with that is concrete.

I think the great fire may have thwarted my search for his Obit or death cert..Cook County has nothing on him.

I was just fishing to see if anyone else out there was working on the Cicero/Chicago Callinans (they wound up in Warrenville) that might have found any info on him

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Re: Jane Callinan Lane

I am related to Jane Callinan Lane. Our Callinan family stemmed from Michael in County Clare. Michael emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio. Michael's sons were John and George Callinan. John was my great grandfather. His daughter Lillian Callinan McGhee was my mother's mother. Vera Callinan was married to George Callinan. I believe I met Vera in Florida long after George had died. Was she remarried? She and my grandmother Lillian were cousins.

Kathleen Flynn Kuritz ... kathleenkuritz@aol.com

 Hi Peter,
I am descended from James Noonan from County Clare, whose sister Mary married a Michael Callinan and immigrated to Australian. This would make me a cousin of this branch of the Callinans from Clare. Are you descended from Sir Bernard Callinan? If so, i would really like to get into touch with you and find out more about the Callinans in Melbourne. My great great grandfather John Noonan, who died in 1892, was apparently mentioned in Richard Callinan's will as a trustee.
Please feel free to write to me, I am constructing an extensive family tree but deont have all the inbformation.
