Indeed she has been a brick wall.

As far as proving James actually died in the Civil War - no I have no proof either. I do know Sarah was listed as widowed in 1880, and he dropped off all census before 1870 (she is listed livin alone with kids)

I was only told by another Callis researcher many years back that he was a Private in Company H, of the 44th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. They also added that he was listed in a hospital at Chattanooga, Tennessee on August 18, 1862. He was wounded at Murfreesboro, TN on December 31, 1862. Sent to hospital in Atlanta, GA on March 20, 1863 where he died from his wounds. The website they claimed to have gotten this info from is http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss

Upon my own searching I found 3 James Callis - 1 in the 44th and 2 in the 55th regiment. All 3 listed on Film Number M231 roll 7. No where have I been able to find or verify the detailed info given by the other researcher, who I no longer have contact with.

If you find anything, keep me posted please, and I'll do the same.

You are very welcome. Sarah has been a brick wall for years.
Also I have never found concrete proof that James was killed in the war. I can find no widow's pension application or other proof. Do you have anything?

Does anyone have any info on James wife, Sarah. She lived in Billy Joes home after James death in the Civil War. Family rumour has it that she had to bound out her sons to make ends meet. I've seen a couple of researchers list her as "Sarah Ann Jones", but no one seems to have sources to back this info.

I only see one Jesse Earl Callis in the Callis study of 1998. His parents were John Edward and Nannie E. Rayner Callis; they were from Tennessee. Jesse Earl was born September 1897. He had seven siblings; William Lee, Minnie Mae, Thomas Edward, Mary Elizabeth,Robert Orion, Dewey Hatcher, and Kizer. There are no descendants listed, but the study does contain information back to the 1600's. bcallis946@aol.com

Thanks for the reply to my post. I actually posted info a few weeks ago under the "post" name acw which you can also read. As I mentioned I have just recently made what I believe to be a definite connection to the Callis family thru Margaret Callis, daughter of William Joseph "Billy Joe" Callis. So what I can offer is still limited. I have found a marriage certificate for Margaret Callis to Joseph F. Williams (my surname) in Sumner Co. TN in 1857. This fits with the census info for William Joeseph Callis' daughter Margaret. Margaret is shown with this family in the 1850 census but is not longer listed with the family in 1860, probably because she married in 1857.
Would love to find anything else about this Margaret. I have been able to view a copy of the book "The Callis Family in the USA and England" and she is listed there as being born in 1841.

Would also very much appreciate any photos of William Joseph Callis family. Would be wonderful if we could all work together to assemble photos of all the children of William Joseph Callis. I will be happy to share any info including photos as I am able to discover.

Please stay in touch. You can also reach me at emailac@netscape.net

Just recently made the connection with the Callis Family.
If I am correct your great grandfather, Daniel Murray Callis would be the son of James Callis b. 1835 in Sumner County, TN to William Joseph Callis. My connection is through one of William Joseph Callis' daughters, Margaret Elizabeth Callis b. circa 1841. She would be my GGGrandmother.

I would very much like to have info you would be willing to share on this family. Any photos would be wonderful. I am having a difficult time finding info on my Margaret.

I am starting to gather info on this family line, but will be happy to share as info is found.

Thanks

I'll look for my memory card. The last two times this side of the family has been together were at Aunt Shirley's funeral and in June 2010 we attempted to have a family reunion. I have photos of a lot of the family from those events.

I also have some photos of your grandfather's sister, Janie, from her trip to Nashville last month. She looks GREAT to be nearly 80.

I look forward to hearing from you and learning about the part of our family tree that you've traced so far!

Ronica

It's possible that we might be related. My grandfather was John Floyd Callis, Sr. He was married to Ruth Durham Callis. My Dad, Ronnie Lee Callis, was their youngest child.

I was told that my grandfather was from the White House, TN area. I never heard anything about my grandfather's parents or siblings. The family historian, my aunt Shirley, passed away a couple of years ago, and I never got the "rest of the story."

If these names sound familiar, maybe we can compare notes. I'll be glad to fill you in on what I know.

Ronica Callis

My name is Brenda Wills and I live in Cross Plains, TN. My husband, Henry P. Wills Jr. (Phil) is the grandson of Minnie Mae Callis who is a sister to your grandfather, Thomas Edward Callis. I show that there were 9 children including Thomas Edward and Minnie Mae born to John Edward Callis and Nannie Raymer. I would be happy to share what information I have with you.

One question I would like to ask of you is do you have any photos of this family? I have photos of Minnie Mae and also photos that I believe are of John Edward Callis and Nannie Raymer but I have no proof that these are the people in my photos. Minnie Mae Callis' first husband, Jesse Filmore Wills, died when my husband's father was only 5 and John Edward and Nannie Callis helped raise him. I would like to get help in verifying my photos.

I look forward to hearing from you and good luck in your search.

Brenda Wills
pwh123@att.net

I have just recently made a possible connection to "William Joseph 'Billy Joe' Callis" while searching for info on my great grandfather. If I am correct, the connection would be thru William Joseph's daughter Margaret Callis who, from info I have found to date, was born around 1841 in Robertson or Sumner County Tennessee. If this is the case, it tears down a major "BRICKWALL" that I have had in trying to trace this grandfather's line.

I would be very interested in anything anyone might be willing to share on William Joseph Callis and any of his known children, especially Margaret. I believe her full name is Margaret E.(possibly Elizabeth) Callis.

Will be glad to share what I believe to be his line as it continues thru his daughter Margaret and eventually to my family.
Callais/Callis/Kellis in Montgomery County NC

I was born in Montgomery County NC. I've traced my Kellis(current spelling) ancestors to John Callis, born about 1802-1804 in Montgomery County. John's mother was Elizabeth, born about 1781. She was living in John's home in the 1850 Montgomery County census. Elizabeth was still living in 1860, then living with her daughter Lucy Callis Hurt in Montgomery Co. There is another family of Kellis' in Montgomery County. Their earliest known ancestor is Calvin James Kellis born about 1823-29. Not sure if/how Calvin is related to John. Not sure of John's father. Any help with figuring this out would be greatly appreciated.

Roger Callis or Reyer Kalis from Texel, Holland.

My Grandmothers, grandfather was a Reijer Kalis born 1840 in Texel, Holland.
1.I have a record of him arriving in London in 1859 as a sailor from Texel in Holland.
2.Arrived in Sydney, Australia aboard "Mystic Belle" in 1876, sailed from Boston via Sava as a sailor. He came to Australia searching for Gold.
3.He married Matilda Charlotte Smith at Young in NSW in 1879, and together they had twins Charlotte & Stephen 1881, Reyer William Henry 1883, Charles John 1886, Maarten Claude C 1895, Alice Emily 1899.
4.He left Australia around mid to late 1890'2 and family heard that he died in Valpariso, but I am unable to verify. Others believe that he returned to Holland. If anyone can assist in the search for the missing years between 1859- 1876 or after the 1890's. I would appreciate any clue's. My grandmother is in her 92nd year and would love to know what happened to him..

The Callis study which was published in 1998 takes these families back to about 1615 in England. The study compiled by Helena Callis McGinnis, now deceased, is titled "The Callis Family in England and the USA, 1086-1998. Send me an email at bcallis946@aol.com and I'll extract some more information for you.

B. F. Callis

The initials might not be exact! The Hanover College Rivers Institute website mentions a collection of black-and-white photographs at the Indiana Historical Society called the "B. F. Callis Collection." These photographs and manuscripts date from the 1860s to 1940. I can't find a B. F. Callis anywhere and wonder if there is a typo and it's really the B. R. Callis Collection because my grandfather, Burr Redford Callis, was passionately interested in riverboats. If anyone knows of a B. F. Callis or can shed any other light on this, please let me know. (I have sent an email to these institutions but haven't heard back.)

I research the WINSTON family, however, I've never found a CALLIS involved. The names of the children of Cleon CALLIS
are very interesting as names of WINSTON people. William Overton, Martha Todd Winston, Alice Bickerton are all found in the WINSTON family. I wonder what connection of CALLIS to WINSTON there may be.

TheI am interested in the family of Cleon Callis who married Catherine Smith (d/o William Smith and Catherine Bibb) on 07 Jan 1807 in Louisa County, VA. Children are:William Overton Callis, Martha Todd Winston Callis, Ballard Smith Callis, Jane Cosby Callis, Alice Bickerton Callis, Nancy Ann Smith Callis, and Lavinia Addison Callis, William Wallace Callis, Addison Carr Callis, and Samuel Gosley Callis and Otho Bernadotte Callis.
