Caleb Calloway Gilbert b. abt. 1827 with roots in SC

This is a longshot, but I'm wondering if any Calloway researchers with roots in South Carolina know of a union between a Gilbert man and a Calloway woman...or some other association. I've just learned the following Caleb Gilbert's middle name was Calloway from his daughter's death certificate. We do not know who his parents were, but we know he had a brother James. I think Caleb was actually born in GA, but his family came from SC based on later census records where parents' birthplaces were stated.

1870 Census > Alabama > De Kalb

Caleb C. Gilbert 45 SC (probably closer to 43)
Agnes 29 AL (probably closer to 37)
Nancy E. 16 AL
George Ann 11 AL
Wm R 8 AL
Eliza E. 6 AL
Margaret C. 4 AL
John T. 2 AL

Thanks much.

Jane

Elizabeth Calloway married to Talmon Wright Harbour 1770 in Virginia

My 3rd great grandparents were Talmon Wright Harbour (born 1755) and Elizabeth Calloway (1770). I have them married in Charles City, Virginia in 1790. I am trying to find out who were the parents of Elizabeth. Some websites say she was related to a William Calloway, but not who her father was??? Any help would be appreciated.

I do know that the Elizabeth Calloway that was daughter to Richard Calloway and Frances Walton was not my Elizabeth . . . she married a Henderson. She could be a cousin, but differently not the same.

ISO Nancy Calloway b. abt. 1807 GA Living in Chambers Co. AL in 1850

I KNOW this is a long shot. I am desperate and trying to follow any little tip I can think of.

Nancy Calloway/Callaway is listed as a person living with Meriweather WALKER and his wife Julia in the 1850 Chambers Co. AL Census. My past research has shown the person to either be a family member or boarder. If she is family I suspect she would be the mother of Julia and Julia's maiden name to be Calloway/Callaway.

Meriweather and Julia are the parents of Joel WALKER b. about 1843 in AL who was the husband of my gggf sister Caroline KELLY b. about 1849. I am trying to find anyone with any little tidbit of information no matter how small so I can possibly find the descendants of Joel and Carrie. I have searched for over 15 years to find any little thing and have come up empty handed. And stranger still is that after Carrie died Joel remarried to a Nancy and the minister was Rev. L.P. Callaway. Coincedence? I dunno and Nancy's middle name is C.

I'm working it folks at all angles. Please feed me something....LOL!

Re: Samuel Tate

The Samuel Tate at the founding of Fort Boonesborough was my direct ancestor. Samuel was living in Rowan County NC near Daniel Boone's parents Squire (Sr) and Mary Boone, was involved with Daniel at least twice in recorded incidents, and was a witness on 17 Jul 1767 on the marriage bond for Squire Boone Jr and Jane VanCleve, along with Squire Boone Sr and John Johnson, on 17 Jul 1765. An account was opened for Samuel Tate in Ledger A of the Henderson Company; Draper Manuscript states he was from Carolina, gave name to Tate's Creek after escaping from the Indians and running down it. An entry in the ledger on 8 Aug 1775 states that credit was given to Samuel Tate for a "canoe brought up for Rd Henderson & c." (Col. Richard Henderson & company) and for supplying "meat and hunting for Jno. Luttrell" (Col. John Luttrell, part of the Henderson Co.). It is quite likely that Samuel and his son Robert were among the men in the group with Daniel and Squire Boone when they met Capt. Twitty at Long Island in the Holston River and began building the Wilderness Road.

More about Samuel Tate may be found in my online genealogy database at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Christine The first Native American to write.

. My hero is Christine Quintasket. Christine was a Native American. Her tribe was the Salishan Indians. Her father was a member of the Okanogan Indians but he left his wife and family. Christine Quintasket is my hero because she was a responsible woman and she was the first Native American Woman to write and publish novels. Someday I hope to be like Christine and be a novelist.

Did you know that Christine's pen names were Christine, Chital, Christina, and Catherine? Christine Quintasket was born in 1888 and died in 1936. Her mother was from the Salishan Tribe and her father was from the Okanogan Indians. She was taught at the Sacred Heart School in Washington for six years but had to leave the school after her mother died to take care of her brothers and sisters. Christine suffered from a chronic illness that lead to heart failure. Christine had three sisters and one brother, but her two older sisters died, also, from a chronic illness. One of Christine's interests was to write books.

Christine Quintasket is my role model because she was the first Native American Woman to write novels, and she took responsibilty for taking care of her family. She accomplished writing three novels and many other books. Christine shows pillars of character like responsiblilty for taking care of her family when they were in need, and trustworthiness for being loyal to people.

If I were to make a connection between Christine and me, it would be that we both like to write stories and we both take responsibility for taking care of our families. If I could ask Christine Quintasket any question, it would be, "At what age did you have an interest in writing?"

Christine Quintasket has a famous quote: "Everything on the Earth has a purpose, every disease a herb to cure it. This is the Indian Theory of existence." That quote means that people have something that they have to accomplish. This quote shows that Christine Quintasket thinks that everything has a reason to be on the Earth and that everything can be corrected or healed.

Children were encouraged to develop strict discipline and a high regard for sharing. When a girl picked her first berries and dug her first roots, they were given away to an elder so she would share her future success. When a child carried water for the home, an elder would give compliments, pretending to taste meat in water carried by a boy or berries in that of a girl. The child was encouraged not to be lazy and to grow straight like a sapling.
— Mourning Dove (Christine Quintasket), Salish
Delaware, farmer; and Calaway, Elizabeth, age 60, b. Maryland.

Pricilla we believe is Pricilla Coverdale, 2nd wife of Jesse Callaway. James H. is her and Jesse's son - is my 3rd Great Grandfather. Family lists his birthplace as Decature, IN. This is the first official record that shows that Pricilla is his mother, other than a letter between 2 of Jesse's grandchildren.

Jesse and Pricilla had about 9 children, some born in Dearborn co., IN.
Jesse the marries Pricilla (where?) and was later in Logan, Dearborn co., IN (1820 census), and is in Lancaster, Jefferson co., IN in 1840 census. We believe he is the Jesse on the Mortality schedule 1850 - died in Oct 1850 in Jefferson co.

Thomas is Jesse's son with his 1st wife who we believe is Mahelah Lambdon. This family (not sure when mother died) came to Oh/In border around Elizabethtown, Hamilton co., OH.
Thomas (born in DE in 1804) married Elizabeth HENRY in 1829 in Cincinnati, OH. They are in the 1830 Hamilton co., OH and move to Jefferson co., IN by the 1840 census.

Thomas' brother William married (1st) Jane BOND (2) Mary Charlotte BONHAM and was in the Whitewater, Elizabethtown, and Harrison, OH (and Harrison, IN) area.

My question is, are there other local census' or listing where I can find Jesse Callaway in 1830. He does not show up on the federal census. Jesse nor Pricilla are in the 1850 census. Is anyone near Decatur or Jefferson counties that might have access to any books to check for either of them? Or maybe have any other information?

Thanks.

Calloway and Hill connection

I am looking for more information on Alexander "Cab" Calloway who was married to Myrtle Louise Hill. He was born 8 Jun 1898/1900 (see records of both) and died June 27, 1900 in Amarillo, Potter, Texas, USA. They had 14 children who live in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, and Illinois. I am looking for more information on Alex's place of birth, sibilings, and parents. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

P.S. Myrtle went by Louise, and Alex when by Cab. Louise's father's name is Autrey Hill (one of Cab & Louise's children is named after him) and his wife was named either Ether or Alberta. The hill family eventually ended up in New Mexico.

Thanks.

I am a Turpin descendant originally from Georgia, now in Texas. Do you know HOW the name Beverly Turpin came into the Calloway family?
Beverly Turpin, as a man's name, first entered my Turpin family in about 1786 when Major John Turpin of Henrico County, VA, and his wife Hannah Talman, named their 4th child Beverly Turpin. Beverly Turpin moved to Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia after his father's death in 1795. Also moving to Augusta were his mother Hannah and siblings, Dr. William Henry Turpin and Sarah "Sally" Turpin Wray.

If any of this fits into your family, please get in touch and let's sort this out!

Brenda Austin Mason
Austin, Texas

I think Perry's father was Cyrus Callaway. My cousin, Rob Callaway, has done extensive work on the Callaway Family. Far more than I have.
The information I have on James, family history refers to him as Will, comes from census records and info from various death and birth certificates. It has been several years since I found the info so I'll have to go over the documents in question to refresh my memory as to exactly what provided what. I know that family stories just gave his name and that he was involved with the railroad in some fashion. I'm not sure that any of the family actually met him after moving away from MO. I know that Mattie visited here with some of her children and that in the 1930's some of the family moved to IL and she visited with them but Will was already dead by that time. I'll dig out my info and see if I can provide details.

I am curious, though. Was this James William Calloway born in Jackson (Madison County) TN, or do you just know that he was born in TN? Jackson would have been a pretty small town at that time, and my Callaway/Calloway family were the only ones I know of that were living there in the 1840's-1880's. My relatives (William S. and his wife, plus several of their children) are buried at Riverside Cemetery there in Jackson.

I appreciate your reply and don't know that this branch will ever find it's proper home. I am related through the wife's family and was most interested in what became of the children. I was hoping to find some of Jame's relatives in hope that they may have more information on what became of the children of James and Mattie Callaway but in my searching located death certificates on all the children. It seems that the branch died out without leaving offspring.

Hi Cynde. It's been a long time since you posted this, so I don't know if you'll see this. I was going to throw out there that my great-great-grandparents moved to Jackson, TN some time before 1840, where they married, but the census shows they were both born in VA. At that time, there was no W VA, only VA. Lee is a common name in our family. It was my grandfather's name, and my father and brother's middle names. My grandfather was born in 1885. Possibly, could there be a "Lee Callaway" connection back in the early 1800's? My grandfather Lee's middle name was Sugars if that helps. His grandparents that moved to Jackson from VA were William S. Callaway and Elizabeth M. Brown, though in some records it is spelled as "Calloway". Their marriage certificate does show Callaway, though.

I agree that I do not think this James William Callaway belongs to the family of William S. and Elizabeth Callaway listed below. That family, that moved to Atlanta, is my family. My grandfather was Lee Callaway, and my father was the Robert Callaway that died in 1994 mentioned in this thread. We are still trying to figure out where William S. and Elizabeth fit in with the rest of the Callaway/Calloways-they were born in VA. Also, there was a William Callaway born in 1870 to this family, but it was William Oliver Callaway, born 10/20/1870 in Jackson, TN (Madison). I know of 11 Callaway children of this family, including my grandfather, and have the birthdates of all, and many dates of death, and children.

Hi, I am doing research on my mothers side of my family tree. I think that Chunk Calloway was my great grand father. Do you know if he had a son named Fred? Fred would be my grand father.

Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
