Julia Calnan - Ottawa in 1918

I am looking for information on a Julia Calnan.

I beleive she was a servant in the house of the McGee Family in Ottawa (185 Daly) in 1918.

I also beleive she was a "home child" coming to Canada in 1908 and living in a Catholic Children's home before leaving for work.

She had a brother James, who after WW1, moved to Winnipeg.

Good day Gina, I have since last posting found that Jerimah's Father's and Mother's names were also Jerimah and Mary Ann (nee Moore), so that's very confusing for anyone doing a search. Your ancestor from Brandon, Cork would possibly have been that Jerimah. I don't know if my family is directly or indirectly related as my great great grandfather immigrated to Sydney, Australia to follow his brother but when he arrived his brother had moved on to New Zealand. I'm not sure of his name I would have to find out from other family members if I manage to contact them. Here's another link for you to follow re. I don't know if we are the same branch or not. My John Joseph Calnan married Margaret Sadler in Ilkeston, Derbyshire on 28/12/1922. I believe his father may have been Jeremiah Calnan who married Mary Ann Moore in County Cork in 1796. John Joseph had 3 sons - Edward is my husband Adrian's father and the other two became Catholic priests. He also had ? 2 daughters.

I can't find a birth certificate for John Joseph (or JJ as he was called)so assume he came over from Ireland prior to 1922.

Hello. I googled my name today, and saw this message, and I would like to tell you that I have ancestors named Joe, and Mary that I know of that moved to the U.S. from County Cork. My aunt Vonnie has a long line of family tree, and is having a huge family reunion this summer! I don't know if that helps you at all, but if you connect the dots right you could find more! I live at Kilbrogan House in Bandon which was lived in by the Calnans from the 1940s until the early 1990s. I would be very interested to know more about their genealogy.

Dear Gina,

The inscription on the bottle is Calnan Bandon. That might be not the manufacturer of the bottle but perhaps the seller of some drinks in the bottle. Were there any Calnans in Bandon who sells something like this? If I had your mail I would have sent picture of that bottle.

Wow, What a small world huh? I am going to go thru my gen papers and see what I have so far. I had the census paid for a few years ago and found alot on the kenney/ calnan line. I will see what I am missing though. If you would like you can email me at Saddlecrew7@cox.net.
One thing I would be interested in would be copies of any pictures you might have access to. I have seen a few of Sweetie Nanas but never could get a hold of them to even make a copy. Now we have moved to OK so I am really stuck!

Yes my dad does have a sister in Az near Pheonix and he has spoken of her on a time a two. For some reason the Calnan's don't do well in staying in touch with one another and why is beyond me to understand. He, my dad doesn't know a number of things that I think he should know. Any way what are your questions and maybe we can get something going and start tieing in the rest of the clan. Jim

I am guessing that who I know as "Uncle James" is your father then ? He has a sister in AZ named Peggy?
I know here as Sweetie Nana- she is my husband Chris's Grandmother. I have met James once also.
I posted on here because I had some missing info and wanted to know if anyone else might know anything. Sweetie Nana gave me a little info but she also couldn't remember somethings and did mention people were tight lipped about things back then.

Frank and Winifred Calnan were my grand parents and my father's name is James Thomas Calnan Sr born in South Boston Ma, I was born in Quincy Ma on 24 Jan 47. Dads dob is 28 Jan 22.

Sorry but I don't know anything about Daniel Calnan/Callanan and Vincentia Brabazon's ancestry, but have come across their names before. Check out the Ancestry.com Callanan board: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/an/surnames.callan...

Apparently Daniel and Vincentia had a son named Blaney/Blaney. I recall seeing the name Blaney Callanan listed in some Kinsale Directories of the early 1800s, as a publican!

In 1843, he contributed to an O'Connell tribute. His name is also listed among those who subscribed to contributions for a monument to commemorate the memory of a late parish priest in Kinsale in 1846. And in Slater's Directory for 1846 he is indeed listed as a publican, right above the Callanan/Calnan I'm interested in, Timothy Callanan, carpenter. Blaney Brabason Calnan, Landowner, etc. was also listed as an Elector in 1844.

My question is were Daniel and Blayney related to Timothy Calnan, house carpenter of Kinsale in the mid 1800s, father of Elizabeth Calnan who married Robert Fowler in 1864?

A year or two ago I contacted St John the Baptist, Kinsale directly and did obtain some record transcriptions for Fowlers and a few Calnans as well, and did make a wee donation to their building fund, which I was happy to do considering it probably was my ancestors' church.

Still looking for my great great great grandfather Holmes Fowler and his links to Robert Fowler, ropemaker of Kinsale, early 1800s and an earlier generation, mid to late 1700s!

Do you know anything about Cornelius Calnan's parents? If he married c. 1890, then he was probably born in the 1850s or 60s, I assume. His father could perhaps have been a brother to Elizabeth (Eliza/Lizzie) Calnan/Callanan, who married Robert Fowler, sailor, in 1864.

If you have any information on Cornelius's ancestor, I'd love to hear the details.

Looking for information on a family living in Kinsale, Co. Cork in the mid 1800s. The father's name was Timothy Callanan, and he was listed as a house carpenter on his daughter Elizabeth's marriage certificate to Robert Fowler, sailor, in 1864.

It seems that Elizabeth Callanan was also known as Eliza Calnan.

Also found a Charles Calnan, ropemaker in Kinsale, 1844.

My mother Mary Theresa CALNAN was born 11 Jul 1906 in 2 Walnut Terrace, Newton Center, MA. Father James J CALNAN born 11 Mar 1877 in Lawrence, MA and Mother Catherine Marie McCaffrey born 1880 in Valley Falls, RI. Mother's sister Dorothy Calnan born 1909 in Newtonville, MA.
This is just about all the information I have at this time.

I had an uncle, George Joseph Calnan, b. 15 Nov 1887 in MA, d. Aug 1966 in Brockton MA. Married Hazel May Wickett in the late forties. I don't know any of his kin.

Looking for info on the Calnan family that settled on Gabbey Road, Town of Pembroke, Genesee County, New York. My gr. grandparents were John b. 1820 m. Mary Donovan Calnan b. 1819. They were from Ireland. Children: Thomas b.1851; James b. 1853; Ellen b. 1855; John (My grandfather) b. 1861; twin Daniel b. 1861. Cornelius Donovan b. 1823 m Ellen Donovan b. 1833 lived next door. I believe Cornelius and Mary Donovan Calnan were brother and sister.

Mary McNichol was the daughter of John McNic(h)ol and Catherine Diamond. She was born 29 Nov 1859 in Glasgow, Scotland. Emigrated to Canada with her family in 1864. John McNic(h)ol was the eldest brother of my grandfather Joseph McNicol 1854 - 1938.

I know that he had a sister named Mary also called Minnie,whose married name was Driscoll. She had a daughter Martha and I believe another daughter named Julia. My grandfather richard was the second youngest and the last born in ireland. we knew his younger sister margaret. we knew that there were many older siblings,mary or as my mother knew her minnie being one of them and her daughters martha and julia. I have some information, however incomplete, and I am hoping to make some Calnan connnections.

My Father's mother was born Eileen Elizabeth Calnan, June 15, 1926.

Her father was James S. Calnan (S for Stanislaus), born June 22, 1899 in Limerick Ireland. He served in the first world war.

He was married to Anna Jeanette Calnan (Wilkinson), born Jan 23, 1903 in St. Paul, Minn.

They had 6 children including:

Patrick Calnan
Agnes Calnan
Kay Calnan
James Calnan
Dorothy Calnan
Eileen Calnan

From the family bible we have the following linage

James Calnan parents were

Patrick Calnan
Eileen Connelly

Patrick and Eileen had three children:

James
Patricia
Patrick

I know Patricia was living in Ottawa, ON in 1919 and actually offically went by Julia P. Calnan.

I am hoping for the best and will continue to dig for more information

I am researching my grandfather. Born in Bandon 1882, married to Mary (nee Sadler)in Ilkeston, Derbyshire 1922. John worked on the Kinsale Harbour Board before moving to Derbyshire. He had 3 sons - Joseph, Edward, James Francis & 2 daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret. Both Joseph & James became Catholic priests in England. John's father was called Jeremiah and he farmed in the Cork area.

Have come to a dead end - cannot find birth certificate or any record of John Joseph in Ireland. Does anyone have any info or suggetions for research areas?? thanks very much - Gina

How exciting!!! My great grandmother was Mary Calnan Driscoll. She and her husband, Michael, had 12 children. Martha and Julia were among them. One of their sons, Patrick, was my grandfather.

Danial Callanan and Vincentia Brabazon are my G-G-G-G-grandaprents. If you have any information on there backround I would appreciate it.
Records generally in Ireland in the General Registrar's office go back to about 1864. The reason for this is that most of the offical records were destroyed in a fire in the Four Courts in Dublin in 1922, and most of the present day records have been copied from the parish church registrars.
You can apply to the Kinsale parish for information on your ancestors, and include a small fee to cover postage, research time, etc. (the amount is at your own descretion).
